    3. Hi Yvonnie, > I am looking to make contact with Alice Louise HARTFIELD or > her descendants I am told she moved to New Zealand. Alice > Louise HARTFIELD was born in Lingfield Surrey in 1892 & > moved to NZ circa 1910. According to BDM Online - Historical Records (https://www.bdmhistoricalrecords.dia.govt.nz/Home/) Alice Louise HARTFIELD married William STONE in 1918 (registration 1918/1077). You can order a copy of that registration online to make sure this is the right woman. There are no births listed on that web site for babes with a mother named Alice STONE - but I wouldn't expect there to be given the time restrictions on that site (100 years for births, 50 years for stillbirths). However, you may be able to find births in the old microfiche indexes. If I were you, I'd start with the deaths of Alice and William, as these should list the age and sex of any "living issue", ie the children who outlived the parent. There is a death that might be her - an Alice Louise STONE born 19 May 1892 who died in 1972 (registration 1972/28419). William is likely listed there, but without more information about him it is difficult to know which entry is him. Get the marriage registration, and work from there. When you place an order with BDM remember to get the printout, not the legal certificate, for family history purposes. Also, if you are a member of the New Zealand Society of Genealogists (NZSG, http://www.genealogy.org.nz/), don't forget to use their Certificates Collection first - this is a much cheaper route for members than purchasing from BDM if the required documents are held. Hope this helps. :-) Kind Regards, Wendy Howard **I have no personal interest in the name(s) mentioned here** *** Please reply to the list/newsgroup *** -- Kaiwaka, Northland, New Zealand http://freepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~wendyh65/ <http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/%7Ewendyh65/>

    1. Mary MCLEAN - Isle of Coll, Scotland>Melbourne, Oct 1855 ... but what then?
    2. Lesley Albertson
    3. Hi Listers, For a while, I have been fossicking for a Mary McLEAN, who was born Kilbride, Isle of Coll, Argyll, Scotland, 12 June 1809. She married a John McLEAN (yes, birth name and married name the same), and had two children, Effy/Euphemia, born 28 Mar 1840 and Neil, born 10 Sept 1841. Mary appears as a widow in the 1851 Census, living with her mother Flora McLEAN, also a widow, as a House Servant, with her two children, Effy and Neal. *** 1851 Census Coll 254 E2/10 McLean Flora W 80 Head Retired farmer's wife Arl., Coll Farm of Acha 255 E2/10 McLean Mary W 42 Dau. House Servant Arl., Coll Farm of Acha 256 E2/10 McLean Effy U 11 G-dau. Scholar Arl., Coll Farm of Acha 257 E2/10 McLean Niel U 9 G-son Scholar Arl., Coll Farm of Acha *** Mary, Effy/Euphemia and Neil migrated to Melbourne in Oct 1855, on the "James Baines", as Unassisted Migrants. (Mary's age is given there as 40, rather than 45). They moved to Tower Hill, Victoria, where Euphemia married a cousin, John McLEAN (in 1857) and Neil became a farmer, in 1875 marrying my great-aunt, Emma Jane BEASLEY. But, what then happened to Mary? I can't find a death for her, or a remarriage, under any variant spelling I can think of ... and a check of Scotland's People does not find a death or a remarriage for her on Coll. Any assistance gratefully accepted - I am currently at a dead end, with this one. Cheers, Lesley (In grey, overcast Melbourne)

    3. I am not sure that I would regard the USD as conclusive. Even Aussie sites use it for its international quality. But a life membership costing less than 18 months' worth? Perhaps that is how long they expect to be around? (For the rest, I have gone to http://www.peoplesearch.com.au/ I hope that it is the one you are talking about...) Even the categories are suspect: What is a "People Database"? Court Records Database? What Australian court has its registries on line? Decisions for the benefit of lawyers, yes, and they are Crown copyright, but not the file of documents with full personal details. In Victoria, years ago, it was made illegal to publish in credit references a writ that had not gone to judgment. It is an offence to publish any information about an Australian divorce case without asking the Court (and any property settlement would be very relevant to a credit reference.) The new Privacy laws now apply as well. Email Address lookup: There are free sites available. Where would this site get a complete list? From the spambots, perhaps. Would you want your address to be on that site for anybody to look up? [It might send the spam barons broke and put them out of business. :) ] The free ones I have seen are made up from email addresses made public by businesses on their Web pages. What is here is probably a copy of those, and nothing more. You go to their contact details and find that they have taken away the contact form "due to spam." Plenty of sites use those contact forms. If this one can't keep spammers away, how secure is their data? How do you know it hasn't been hacked and changed? Enough said. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
