My grandfather also left a wife and 3 young children to go to WW1. It was economic necessity. It was a job. It was a way of earning a living. He was 30, and not a young man looking for adventure, as is so often depicted. He was finding it difficult to earn a living in his specific trade, in a country town in Victoria after the gold finally petered out, and the town went into decline. It wasn't much better in the cities in the early 1900s. There had been a depression in the 1890s.

    3. Hi. Is anyone able to confirm the birth date, or even just the year, of the WW1 flying ace Cedric Ernest Howell in Adelaide? Father Ernest, mother Ida Caroline. The Australian Dictionary of Biography has 17 June 1896 but I'd just like to confirm it from the birth records. http://adbonline.anu.edu.au/biogs/A090381b.htm Thanks. 3. Born abt 1889 possible birth name Arthur Augustine GEARD Married 1913 Redfern Vic as Arthur GEARD to KANE Violet E, giving his fathers name as Herbert, at Redfern NSW no 5150 marriage also listed under St Clair Arthur A to KANE Violet E at Redfern NSW no 5150 (in other words he gave both surames at time of marriage and it was double listed under same reg no) Enlisted 1917 as Arthur St CLAIR - Next of kin wife Violet St CLAIR, gives birth place as Collingwood Died 1934 Randwick Vic as Arthur St CLAIR father listed as Herbert, mother as Carrie possible children StClair Arthur A, born 1909 - parents Arthur A G and Violet E place Drummoyne NSW reg no 24664 StCLAIR Arthur V born 1913 - parents alternately as Arthur A G and Violet E / Arthur A and Violet E place Redfern NSW reg no 14804 StClair Elvy L born 1913 - parents alternatly as Arthur A G and Violet E / Arthur A and Violet E place Redfern NSW reg no 14805 also 14809 StClair Lillian R E born 1913 - parents alternatly as Arthur A G and Violet E / Arthur A and Violet E place Redfern NSW reg no 14806 also 14810 The multiple registration listings for the births may be misleading, there was one child born in 1909 and three children listed as born in 1913 to Arthur and Violet, explanation for multi-listing could be interpretaion of spellings and/or being registered both by a family member and then possibly midwife or another family member. 3. Hi list, for those with English ancestry the Yesterdays site, link below, ( or Google Yesterdays Journey) has been updated with hundreds of school admission records giving details of pupils from all over the British Isles. Most have DOB, parent or guardian, last school attended and where some moved on to. Most were within the British Isles but there is a growing number of pupils coming from or going to overseas areas. mike -- http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~spire/Yesterday/index.htm<http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/%7Espire/Yesterday/index.htm>

    3. The verification service has moved beyond the original Wellington location, and appointments are now being taken for Auckland, Manukau and Christchurch. http://www.dia.govt.nz/ivs Scroll down to see the mobile office locations and dates they will be there. No doubt this will be updated periodically as other locations, dates and times become available. All it takes is an email to the address on the web site, stating which office you want to attend. I sent my email yesterday (Sunday) and had a reply with an appointment time at 10am this morning (Monday). This is what you need to be able to order "non-historic" registrations online. 3. But be sure to be exact when asking for this or any check. If you say Mother's forename = Mary and it turns out to be Mary Jane or even Jane Mary then that is not a match! So say something Mary.with/without additional forenames. Same with occupation eg carpenter is not the same as joiner. So say carpenter, joiner or similar coccupation. Think it out carefully! Chris <ajroberts@people.net.au> wrote in message news:mailman.297.1263167437.14600.genanz@rootsweb.com... I also endorse everyone's comments about the GRo - an excellent service, the turn around is really something! They have another little option - parent checks that you can put in if you aren't sure you have the right person, but you know who their parents were. If you tick this option, the GRO will check first and IF the certificate you are requesting isn't the right person, they will let you know and only charge you £5 for checking the parents, and you won't collect unwanted certificates that don't belong to your family.  Cheers Angie On Sun 10/01/10 05:02 , "billannieliam" billannieliam@ozemail.com.au sent: Happy New Year Genanz I seem to remember quite a while ago an organization where a UK marriage certificate could be ordered and paid for in Australian dollars??
