Hi Terry If you look up the NZ whitepages on the internet www.whitepages.co.nz you will find that there are two P J Dromgool - Auckland and Kaitaia. There is actually one Dromgool in Wellington in Kilbirnie (not PJ). Your friend could ring them and find out if they are related. I'm still trying to pin point when his son's were born in 1806. I looked at the microfilm reel yesterday in reference to his being sent away but it does not state how long for. This was also recorded in the newspaper. Any help much appreciated. Kind regards Dianna

But as recently as 1960-70s I have a friend whose Scots mother did not even attend her own husband's funeral, as it just 'wasn't done'. She was adhering to an old tradition.
>From The Queenslander, 5 April 1913 - REMINISCENCES OF AN OLD GOLD DIGGER. By Frank Shellard. In the early part of the fifties there was a great-rush to the "Ovens" gold-field, Victoria. Beechworth is the principal town in the "Ovens" district, and it is on the old Sydney-road from Melbourne, and near, the Murray River, Spring Creek runs through Beechworth and empties itself into Reid's Creek, which discharges itself over some falls into the Woolshed Creek. . . . The diggings were always a good market for the sale of horses and cattle, and horse thieves and cattle duffers were doing well. A number of them had their haunts in the Snowy Mountains, where they were not disturbed by prospectors. Some of them got too bold at last, and got caught. One, who had a station above Boulders on the Mitta Mitta River, always went by the name of Mitta Mitta Jack. He was caught selling horses that were owned in Beechworth. He was there tried and got ten years' penal servitude, with all his property confiscated. His friends, however, drove nearly all his stock away to the ranges until the storm blew away. ------------------------------------------------ Historic Australian Newspapers, 1803 to 1954 http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper Aherns in Australian Records http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~aherns/ahcrim.htm ------------------------------------------------
The burial was in the Presbyterian section Rookwood, I've just also found his wife's funeral notice which has the same "no female mourners" note. The burials took place in 1925 and 1935. It has been suggested that traditionally the Scots did not have women at funerals and these burials may have taken place at the time when this was changing and women were starting to attend. Some families obviously not approving the modern move may have wanted to stay with tradition. thanks for the reply Erica "Kerry Raymond" wrote in message news: What religion was the deceased? What religion was the deceased? Some religions have a custom of burials being conducted only by men. Kerry
As I understand it, at some time periods it was customary for the funeral to be attended only by men. The women stayed at home preparing food etc for the wake. I just came across a newspaper funeral notice with this stipulation: "By request, no flowers. No female mourners." Was it was a case of not wanting wailing women at the graveside, this man had four daughters so it seems a bit mean to exclude them - has anyone else seen this before? Will probably never know the reason why, but very curious. cheers Erica

>From The Sydney Morning Herald, 16 July 1869 - The Ovens and Murray Advertiser is responsible for the following:-- "In addition to Power, the robber, we have now in this district the notorious Mitta Mitta Jack. M'Kay, too, once of the Middle Creek, is at large; and we are to be further blessed in a short time with the presence of the wretch Toke, who is well known to have committed such dreadful crimes in the Omeo district and thereabouts. point out Mitta Mitta Jack and Toke as desperate and irreclaimable criminals, but they have placed themselves beyond all consideration of this kind.
