    3. Windows 7 has "Windows Virtual PC" built-in. You can use this to run old programs "ajjones" wrote in message news:[email protected] It may be possible this way, according to advice from a computer savvy person I know. Download <virtualbox.> , a free programme, then load your Win 98 or XP or whatever onto virtualbox, then run your programme within that. 3. Chris, What was the name of the church where the couple married ? A lot of NSW churches have had parish registers filmed, with copies at SAG and NSW State Library (don't know whether there are any copies interstate). 3. >From the Colonial Times, 28 October 1856 - LOCAL INTELLIGENCE Liberation of Aherne.--This man, whose case has excited so much attention, was released from the House of Correction where he had been employed in breaking stones, on Saturday last. It appears that some gentlemen interfered in the case and got him to sign a petition, which the Governor was pleased to grant, Aherne undertaking not to quit the colony until the expiration of the four years, unless the sum due to the Government was first paid. The man and his wife and children are residing in Harrington-street, opposite the "Queen's Arms," and we understand, have been visited by several benevolent individuals. We are informed that it is not true, as stated, that Aherne came out under a fraudulent bounty ticket, and it was not until he had been out of work several weeks, and some relations of his wife undertook to pay their expences to Sydney, where they could make sure of work, that he conceived the idea of going away. The man states, that, as the bounty ticket was sent home to him by a relation from this colony, he had no idea that he was bound to stop here. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Dennis Ahern | Immigrant Ships Transcribers Guild, Irish Maritime News Acton, Mass. | http://immigrantships.net/newsarticles/newsarticles.html - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

    3. Hi List Have a Transcript of a Marriage in Sydney 1867 William Haddon to Annie Holden which states that Annie's "Age, Birthplace & Parents names obtained from Church Register No 7, 29 Sep 1902" I am aware that it was not compulsory to include Parents Names etc on Marriage Registrations until 1896 & that sometimes this information was added later by the Registry after referring to the parish register. The person I am researching Annie Holden (Stewart) father James Holden - Fireman- Annie born 1841-1842 Gundaroo NSW - from Marr Cert. Her birth does not appear on the NSW Birth Indexes. Have tried many combinations & variations in spelling - there are 2 entries that looked possible but have tracked these Anne's & they are not mine. She appears in many Newspaper articles as Anne/Annie Holden Stewart - have so much info on her life but cannot find anything about her birth. My thoughts were she was illegitimate - so therefore not registered - but having received her Marriage Cert with the reference to the Church Register just wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction re the Church Register. My query is does anyone know how I can obtain information from "Church Register No 7". Has anyone had a similar cert & tracked down the Register entry Regards Chris in WA

    3. Gloria and Anne Thankyou so much for your efforts, Yes I have seen the various Ancestry records, and had the service records of him and his children to his first marriage (five of them serving in WWII) digitised Edwin Daniel (Stanny) was Bn on Norfolk Island, Helena Quintal was his first wife, they had seven children together, She left him and children on Norfolk Island with family support and went to Sydney to work as a contracted housekeeper Once war broke Stanny, His Brother Goldie, and eldest son Alfred enlisted together, Within the next three years his eldest daughter and two more sons enlist, the last being my father (Who put his age up two years) Amazingly he was enlisted into the same Battalion as his father, but by the time he joined the Battalion on the Atherton Tablelands, his father had been injured and in hospital while there he met Vera, he was transferred to transport and my father never saw him until after the war was over. He sometime during this time married Vera, I do not know much of her side of the family (like her maiden name) By this time Stanny's father had died another son had enlisted and had also brought his younger brother with him to Sydney to Helena I do know the him and Helena remained in contact, her posing as his sister and helping Vera out with her young children ( I believe she had nine) ...lol..they all knew my "Nana McCoy" as Aunty Helen, who's Sydney friends included none other than "Tilly Devine" as well as a few other Norfolk Island women who remained in Sydney after the war. My father and two of his siblings returned to Norfolk Island while the rest of his family remained in N.S.W. My father's side of the children knew but never spoke of it. I am just glad that my father's family got a chance to meet some of thier younger half siblings once they knew the truth Cheers Liz Liz McCoy No 9. I upgraded from Windows Home Premium to Windows 7 Professional to run all my Digger BDMs. The upgrade allows you to run a virtual Windows XP and I found that my CDs work perfectly. But as John says this is only necessary if you have a 64-bit computer. Chris

    3. Dear Paul, John and others, You might want to look at this page: http://www.macbeth.com.au/digger/support.html#windows7 to understand the how's and why's of using older programs with the new 64 bit Windows 7 From an older posting: "Sounds like the DOS programmes are 32 bit.???? and behave the same as the old Digger programs." I think this is a true statement. It doesn't cost the $200 you mentioned...... 3. Ancestry has him on electoral rolls in 1949 in Surry Hills, then 1954, 1958 and 1963 at Paddington. When I looked at the records he was at 536 or 586 Bourke St, groomeman with Vera Evelyn McCoy Home duties in 1949. In 1954 he and Vera were at 56 Renny St also with Vera, the same details, same address in 1958 and in 1963. He was listed as a groom in all of these and Vera as home duties. There is also a tree with the following details: * /Birth: / 6 Mar 1899 - Norfolk, Massachusetts, United States * /Marriage: / 1918 - Norfolk Island * /Death: / 1968 - Sydney, New South Wales, Australia * /Parents: / Michael Baker Quintal Mccoy, Elsie Adeline Christian * /Spouse: / Helena Lillian Quintal Hope this is useful. 3. Liz His war service r4ecord has been digitised and there are two notes dated 12th April and 13th May 1944 recording that he had changed his next-of-kin from Helene to Leopold Goldie McCoy. No mention of a Vera seems then to narrow the years down to after 1944 but before 1949. Gloria

    3. HI Liz I can't locate the marriage but it looks like it was before 1949. However he was obviously using his own name when he married Vera as, in the 1949 electoral roll they are listed in NSW at 536 Bourke St in the sub-div of Surrey Hills...... Edwin Daniel McCoy (groomsman) and Vera Evelyn McCoy (home duties). In 1954 they are in the sub-div of Paddington at 56 Renny Street and they are still there in 1963. In 1980 it looks like Vera Evelyn McCoy was at 14 Metcalfe Ave, Moorebank, with an Annette Helen, Margaret Vera, and Michael James Metcalfe. Gloria

    3. >From The Cornwall Chronicle, 18 October 1856 - Immigration Farce.--Andrew Ahern and Elizabeth Ahern were charged with being about to leave the island before the termination of four years, without repaying the amount of their passage money. They were remanded as the Immigration Agent was not in attendance. This is one of the instances of over legislation, in appropriating a large amount of public money, in bringing people to the colony, and then finding no employment for them. The parties so charged declared their utter ignorance of any agreement to remain any time in the colony. They were sent for, and they came, and they knew nothing more about it. They were required to find securities to appear to-morrow.--H. T.
