    1. Assistance please - about JONES m BURN and familiy
    2. Di Maloney
    3. Hi all, I am trying to find the parents and/or siblings of my great great grandparents below. HENRY JONES (born about 1832) who married BRIDGET BURN (born about 1836) on 14 Mar 1862 in Truro, South Australia. I am making the assumption that they were born somewhere over the waves. They had 3 children that I know of and I have much information about them and their families, although I cannot find an entry of birth in the S.A. BDMs, of their first child even though I have a birth date supplied by generous Jones researchers. Mary Eleanor Jones married my ancestory Herbert Clement Esse. I have his BMD certificates but I would like her birth cetificate. I am waiting on a reply from the Truro Historical Society and apart from looking 'almost' evrywhere, have not been lucky. Any assistance greatfully apprciated. Please reply to newsgroup, thank you. Regards, Di Maloney Vic. Australia

    3. Pat, There are a couple of places youcould try although some of them are not specially for Douglas Pde: http://vhd.heritage.vic.gov.au/places/result_detail/15027?print=true www.williamstownhistsoc.org.au/ http://williamstowninfo.com.au/history.html I googled: williamstown historical society and found two of the links above. It's worth googling "Williamstown Vic" Good luck, Di ex Western Suburbs girl and lover of Williamstown "Pat Wade" <[email protected]> wrote in message news:[email protected] > Hi, > > I am trying to piece together my, CAITHNESS family > of Williamstown, history. > > I would really love to collect some pictures of > the area. > > Some time back I went to Williamstown and it > appeared to me that 63 Douglas Pde is now shops, > so I cannot get a picture of what could have been > their place. > > According to the records I can find James > Robertson CAITHNESS was living at 61 Douglas Pde > in 1871 and his mother at 63 Douglas Pde. 3. Hi, I am trying to piece together my, CAITHNESS family of Williamstown, history. I would really love to collect some pictures of the area. Some time back I went to Williamstown and it appeared to me that 63 Douglas Pde is now shops, so I cannot get a picture of what could have been their place. According to the records I can find James Robertson CAITHNESS was living at 61 Douglas Pde in 1871 and his mother at 63 Douglas Pde. In 1874 James moved into 63 Douglas Pde which was a four roomed house owned by his uncle James ROBERTSON. I have tried on line (Picture Australia - Vic PRO etc) and I am guessing that this is a very long shot, but if anyone has pictures from their family history of this area that they could share I would really love it. Thank you Pat

Can someone advise me of the details of any deaths between 1869 and 1877 in Victoria of any John Strachan. I have these dates from newspaper adverts of events in his children's lives. Any other leads are also welcome to help me identify his ancestry. There are other Strachans in my wife's tree from around the same time and place who married into the family line. Margaret Strachan who married David Barclay in Tasmania had a brother James Ford Strachan who was in Geelong at about the same time as John Strachan (Johns marriage announcement states he was from Geelong). 1. Re: Comparative values
    2. Kerry Raymond
    3. There is no simple answer because the comparative value of money is derived from the costs of goods and services, e.g. how many loaves of bread do you get for $X today versus in the past, or how much to rent a 2 bedroom cottage today versus in the past? However, the costs of all goods and services do not increase at the same rate. For example, wheat was in short supply in the early colony so bread was far more of a luxury item than it is today and would have cost comparatively more of a person's wages. Conversely, a cottage in the Rocks overlooking Sydney Harbour was probably cheaper in the past than it would be today. This is why it is such a complex business today to calculate the CPI (consumer price increase) which attempts to measure overall how much worse off we are each year due to rising prices. As Douglas Adams put it in Hitchhikers's Guide to the Galaxy: The History of every major Galactic Civilization tends to pass through three distinct and recognizable phases, those of Survival, Inquiry and Sophistication, otherwise known as How, Why, and Where phases. For instance, the first phase is characterized by the question "How can we eat?" The second by the question "Why do we eat?" and the third by the question "Where shall we have lunch." It is fair to say our early Australian ancestors were in the survival phase, whereas in the 21st century we have certainly achieved sophistication! Kerry

    3. Dear Bob, The history of the Presbyterian Church in Australia from what I can read shows much division based around loyalty and basic interpretation differences. The original structure appears not to be as centralised as the, say, Catholic or Anglican churches. With a lot of googling and back-tracking I managed to find some articles to help you. Note the name "Scots Kirk" rather than "Scots Church" brings up lots of web pages. Home page for Scots Kirk, Sydney http://www.scots-sydney.org.au/ McIntyre joined Lang's Synod in January 1838, taught at Lang's Australian College, and acted as Lang's locum tenens while Lang was overseas from January 1839 to March 1841 Here is a brief biography of Rev William McIntyre: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_McIntyre_(minister) Rev.William McIntyre mentioned here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Forbes_(minister) A brief explanation of the fragmentation of the Scots / Presbyterian congregation http://www.dictionaryofsydney.org/entry/st_stephens_presbyterian_church_macquari e_street or http://tinyurl.com/77g2tro See also on this page under "The Presbyterian church" http://www.dictionaryofsydney.org/entry/scots and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Presbyterian_Church_of_Eastern_Australia Discussing the pro's and con's of Presbyterian church history is best done in private correspondence. It can be horribly misinterpreted on an OPEN FORUM can lead to much anguish, intensely heated arguments and at worst flaming, so I'm not prepared to go down that track. Don't forget, Google Archives EVERYTHING, and it hangs around FOREVER, except private e-mails I have tried above to stick to historical facts so personal sensitivities are not trespassed Cheers, Tony Moore (Castle Hill, NSW) @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@ On 13 Dec 2011 at 14:50, BOB wrote: From: BOB <[email protected]> Subject: SCOTS CHURCH-CHURCH OF SCOTLAND Date sent: Tue, 13 Dec 2011 14:50:56 +1100 Organization: BigPond To: [email protected] > On the 13th March 1841 two Bounty immigants, John FORSYTH and Elizabeth > GILLIES, were married in the Scots Church situated on York between > Jamieson and Margaret streets, Sydney. Copies too large to send by email have been transferred onto a CD. The person who does my printing assures me he can print off large hard copies for me (I like to have such copies as well as those on on my computer) from which I will be able to do transcriptions if I so choose.
