    3. Hi, My last query proved interesting - I found that the street numbers in Douglas Pde changed at least 3 times between 1870 and now. (pre 1905, post 1905 and now) Today #63 would be in the middle of the road cnr Douglas Pde and Stevedore St (well actually no #63) and in 1905 it would be 1/2 way between Stevedore St and John St and in 1870 it was on the corner of John St and Douglas Pde. The house I want is not there, of course, but in the throes of searching I did find a probable similar type.:-) My next query is the Williamstown Naval Dockyards. I have information that gives the address as opposite Nelson Place - Well this is quite a long area. I know the pier that the ferries dock at these days and am wondering if it is, as you face this pier, to the left or to the right. I have tried googling - no actual address I have tried going through all the MMBW 1905 maps but I seem to be going round in circles (maybe not using the right search terms) On the Google maps there is a Transfield Shipbuilding - would this be it????? (opposite Titanic restaurant) Thank you and a Happy and Safe New Year to all Pat

    3. >From The Argus, 2 July 1932 - SWORN EVIDENCE DISBELIEVED. Disbelief of evidence given on oath was ex-pressed by the chairman of the Bench (Mr. J. Baragwanath, J.P.) at the South Melbourne Court on Friday, when Herbert Ahern fur cutter, Chapel street, Prahran, and Percival Smith, Gordon street, Toorak were each charged with having loitered at the corner of Nimmo and Danks streets, Albert Park on the morning of June 23, with intent to commit a felony. Constable Williams said that with other members of the police wireless patrol he saw the men standing near a fence and questioned them. In Ahern's pockets were a strong knife and an electric torch. About 200 yards away an attempt had been made to enter premises by scraping mortar away from the bricks of a wall. Ahearn and Smith both said that they had attended a party in Victoria street, Brunswick, and after leaving a girl in Nimmo street, they were returning home. Mr. Baragwanath--Your story is an unbelievable one for a man with any common sense. You start to take a young girl home and then allow her to run home unprotected. A beautiful story. Ahearn was fined £10, in default imprisonment for two months, and Smith was fined £5, in default imprisonment for one month. ------------------------------------------------ Historic Australian Newspapers, 1803 to 1954 http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper Aherns in Australian Records http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~aherns/ahcrim.htm ------------------------------------------------

BDM's show the parents of Frederick John Hillock as being Robert & Elizaabeth. (My aunt recalls her father only ever being called Freddie). I then found the marriage of Robert Hillock to Elizabeth Badell in 1901. (Her maiden name appears spelt as Badell or Bedall in the records). My aunt knows that her father was born illegitimate, but knows nothing else - the family was never talked about. I can track Robert Hillock through the Sands Directory but am having difficulty in finding him before his marriage. There is a death registration in 1927 (parents shown as Robert & Elizabeth) with Robert aged 63yrs and this would put his birth year as circa. 1864. The only birth I could find was for a Robert Hillock b. 1867 with mother's name as Dorinda and father's name shown as "(Hillock)". And there lies my brick wall - different mother's names (if it's the same person) and I can't find any information on any Hillocks prior to this. The name seems to have just 'appeared'. Would anyone have any ideas as to how and where I can go from here? I would appreciate ANY suggestions. Thank you, Dorothy

    3. Thank you so much, Barry. That is most certainly her arrival accompanied by her brother, Joseph. He, by the way, apparently died at sea in 1887. Their parents were Joseph Evans and Asenath Sarah (nee' Priseman) so the deaths do not seem to be the one we are looking for. Strange, isn't it? Maybe no one knew her well enough to report her death. A big "Thank You" though, Barry. Noreen P.S. What a shame that Australian census details were destroyed.
