Hi Ada, Thank you so much for this. I am planning to head to Williamstown by the ferry so having the addresses pinpointed as much as possible will help when walking. I really do appreciate your help. Hi Gail, Most unlikely to be a contraction - straight from Job in the Bible. Well, Ulian does come up as a surname but not as a particularly common one (e.g. it appears once in the entire FreeBMD). However, when dealing with rare and unusual names, it is worth considering whether you are seeing a transcription error. In this case, Ulian as a middle name for a girl looks a lot like a transcription error of "Lilian". Does her name consistently appear as Ulian in all her BDM records? Kerry
Hi, I'm just curious about a naming practice in one branch of my family and was wondering if this is a normal late 19th Century thing One of my relatives is Edward Clifford Howson Crockford and other is Cyril Kinder Crockford The Edward's "Howson" middle name is his mothers maiden name and Cyril's middle name is his grandmothers maiden name And last but not least by Grandmother who's brother's these two were had the middle name "Ulian" - any ideas where that might have come from. Note: I'm a newbie at this so be kind :) Alan
Pat, As far as I can remember when visiting Williamstown both as a child then teenager and adult, it was always called Nelson Place, BUT, having said that my brain is in senior mode more often than not. I also googled 13 Nelson St Williamstown and it shows Transfield Shipbuilding but google earth pinpoints it as Port Phillip Wool Processing and the address changes to 33 Tourist Drive. The Vic Lands Department (if they are still called that) may be able to help with old maps of the area or even the Council Archives. Hi, I am still trying to tie up loose ends with my CAITHNESS family of Williamstown. I now have notes - 1) 1864 Council Rates Marg. Caithness rented a timber house in Little Nelson St, Williamstown. 2) 1864 - Marriage certificate of her daughter Jane Caithness said Margaret lived at 13 Nelson Street, Williamstown. There is NO Nelson Street (that I can find) there is Nelson Place and Little Nelson Place and Street in 1905. (it is the same road way but in the middle it is called Little Nelson Place.) Now from checking things Nelson Place and Little Nelson Street are two different streets and it would appear if I have read things correctly that Little Nelson Street/place is now Aitken Street. I wonder if any ones knows if there are any Sands & McDougall or other directories that are around 1864, that I could check out what they have for the address?? Thank you Pat
