In Victoria a few years ago (about 2000 I think) our Government in it's wisdom decided that birth records should not be released to the public until 100 years after the event. Before that it was 80 years. The Great War Index that had been published a few years earlier contained some of these records so it was removed from sale. Copies that are "out there" were not recalled however. -- Please reply to group or reply "off-group" by removing the two "z"s from my e-mail address. 3. There are two sources of electoral rolls which enable you to search by address. If you happen to be interested in one of the years indexed by the Qld Family History Society (1903, 1913, 1922, 1934, 1941, 1949 and 1959), then you can search by address using their DataSearch software that comes on their CD-ROMs. If you are using Ancestry, then you can do a search at the level of town/suburb names but not at street names. So you can search for Hettie as the given name and Any Event in 1963 in Southport, Queensland, Australia, and that will return you all the Hetties in Southport. You can then look at their electoral roll entry and see what address they give. The problem though is that Hettie might be Hettie or it might be short for Harriet or Henriette (and goodness knows what else) so you might need to try a number of names. It is a common misconception that Ancestry requires a surname for its searches. Maybe it once did. But currently if you can provide enough other information to narrow it down, then Ancestry will search without names. If you don't provide enough other information, it will give up and complain. I have found a number of maiden or married names for women by searching in Ancestr\y with their given names and some other information to narrow it down. Kerry

    1. Child Custody Dispute - Victoria, c.1920
    2. Graham
    3. Can anyone suggest how a child custody dispute might have been handled c.1920 in Victoria? The scenario is as follows: 1917 - child is born out of wedlock. Mother is 18, father 21. Parents are not given permission to marry due to religious and social differences. Child is given to mother's married sister. When mother turns 21 (well 20 actually; she fudged her age) they marry and attempt to get their baby back. They have 9 more kids. After adoption becomes legal c.1926, mother's sister adopts child. and all live happily ever after. The old Great War Index (which is no longer available due to the 100 year rule) lists the birth twice. Once under the mother's maiden name and once under the father's name. I'm thinking that the young couple, desperate to get their baby back might have tried to re-register the birth as if they were married at the time. Would there have been any legal avenues for them to pursue and are there any records available? -- Please reply to group or reply "off-group" by removing the two "z"s from my e-mail address. 3. Hi list   I wonder if sks may be able to help me please.   I am trying to find out what happened to my great uncle George WHITE b.29/11/1905 Fitzroy North, Victoria, parents John WHITE & Ellen RAYMOND.   After his marriage in 1927 to Mary (Marie) Ellen RADFORD broke down, it is believed that he travelled to Queensland and lived in Southport on the Gold Coast.   I have found the following on ancestry.com.au Queensland electoral rolls and think it's a good chance this is my man:   1963 - George WHITE 7 Seabank Lane, Southport, Signwriter. 1968 - George WHITE 18 Central Street, Southport, Signwriter.   George WHITE was listed alone on these electoral rolls.  It is known that George had a partner named Hettie (full name not known).   I would like to know if it is possible to search the electoral rolls for this time by address to see if George was living with anyone else.   If anyone can assist me with this query or can add any further information I would be very grateful.   Kind regards Gail Melbourne.

    3. >From the Poverty Bay Herald, 29 January 1903 - TRAGEDY OF A SURPRISE PARTY. A Moree message to the Sydney Telegraph states:-- Last night about 8.30 Horace Charles Ezzy, aged 18 years, committed suicide at the Post-office Hotel, under peculiar circumstances. An inquest was held at the Court today, before the Coroner. It appears that deceased had been keeping company with a girl, Kitty Ahearn, with whom he quarreled because she persisted in attending a surprise party, to which he objected to her going. Miss Ahearn, with others, was getting ready for the party, when Ezzy came to the bedroom door, and said he would not allow her to go. She stated her intention of going, and he then made a grab at her, catching her by the shoulder with his left hand. He held a half-open razor in the other. Miss Ahearn succeeded in getting away from him, and ran into the hotel bar. Ezzy then ran into the bedroom, locked himself in, and cut his throat. The door had to be forced, and he was then found lying under the bed with his throat cut from ear to ear. He was pulled out by two men, and staggered to his feet, but died almost instantaneously. Kitty Ahearn, while giving evidence at the inquest, was greatly agitated, and had to be removed. Some months since her throat was cut by a man at Boggabri, near Gunneduh, and the man is how serving a sentence for it. ------------------------------------------------ Historic Australian Newspapers, 1803 to 1954 http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper Aherns in Australian Records http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~aherns/ahcrim.htm ------------------------------------------------

    1. Did Sam VERNON Go to School? Southland / Otago School Roll question
    2. Stuart Park
    3. Samuel Edward Portman VERNON was born in August 1880 in Upper Waikaia, Southland, where his parents were goldmining and hotel keeping in the remote Whitecoomb Valley, 40kms north of Waikaia. Sam was of school age between 1886 and say 1895. But where might he have gone to school? He is not on the roll of Waikaia School, which is a long way south. Roxburgh is a possibility, but it is a long way east across the range. In 1887, when Sam was seven, his father wrote to the newspaper (Mataura Ensign 23 September 1887 p.8) deploring a proposal to spend more money on secondary schools, and advocating spending the money instead on 'providing free education for children residing in isolated districts where the children do not reach the number required by the Education Act before establishing a State School'. Was it his own son's education he was concerned about? In 1893, when Sam was 12, he gave evidence in the Warden's Court (Otago Witness 30 March 1893 p.16) about a mining claim that he had pegged. By then, his schooling was apparently over - but had it ever started? Any help or suggestions for research avenues (from the remote Far North!) welcomed. _______________________ Stuart Park Kerikeri, New Zealand <mailto:[email protected]> [email protected]

    3. >From The South Australian Advertiser 21, January 1903 - A LUCKY GIRL. HER LIFE TWICE ATTEMPTED. ESCAPES EACH TIME. SUICIDE OF HER ASSAILANT. Sydney, January 20. At the Moree Hotel last evening Horace Charles Ezzy, about 19 years of age, attacked Kate Ahearn, aged l8, with a razor. The girl escaped, and the young man then committed suicide by cutting his throat. The parties in the tragedy had been keeping company for some months past, and until a short time before the occurrence they appeared to be on friendly terms. It is said that the girl had been invited to attend a surprise party last night. Ezzy objected to her going, but she refused to comply with his request that she should stay away. The first intimation of the tragedy was given to three gentlemen, who were talking in the hotel bar. Miss Ahearn rushed in in an excited state, exclaiming that Ezzy had attempted to cut her throat. She had a slight wound near the eye, from which blood was flowing. She did not give any definite account of what had happened, and a little boy then called out that the man had tried to cut his throat. The men rushed out, and blood was noticed to be flowing from under the door of the bedroom. One of them then forced the door open. It was not locked, but had some weight pressing against it. On the door being opened a horrible sight was presented. The floor was covered with blood, and the prostrate form of the young fellow was found lying face downwards under the bed, where it had evidently been forced by the door being opened. Mr. Griffin caught hold of the wounded man and raised him to his feet, when Ezzy made an attempt to grapple with him. In reply to a question as to what was the matter, he made an attempt to articulate, but only a gurgling sound was emitted. A doctor was immediately sent for, but before his arrival the young fellow had died. The deceased had been out of work, but yesterday he appeared to be in a cheerful mood, as he hoped shortly to get employment. He resided with his parents and brothers and sisters, who are well known and respected. Some months since Kate Ahearn had had a somewhat similar experience, a man having attempted to cut her throat at Boggabiri, near Gunnedah. The man is now serving a sentence for the act. ------------------------------------------------ Historic Australian Newspapers, 1803 to 1954 http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper Aherns in Australian Records http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~aherns/ahcrim.htm ------------------------------------------------

    3. >From the Grey River Argus, 9 May 1902 - A LOVERS' TRAGEDY. At the Circuit Court, Tamworth, Thomas Smith, aged 24, was indicted on a charge of attempting to murder Kate Ahern, aged 18, at Curlewis, near Gunnedah, on February 27th. A second count charged him with maliciously wounding with intent to do grievous bodily harm. The case for the prosecution was that prisoner and prosecutrix were lovers, and that the former, as the result of jealousy, "and to spite her father, who was opposed to their engagement, attempted to take her life by attacking her with a razor. In the struggle prosecutrix received three gashes about the neck, besides several cuts on the hands. The occurrence was observed at a distance by several persons. Prosecutrix while giving evidence went into hysterics, and was carried out of court. She declared that she still loved him, and if he were free would be prepared to become his wife. The jury brought in a verdict of guilty on the second count, and prisoner was sentenced to 10 years penal servitude. On hearing the sentence pronounced prosecutrix had another fit of hysterics, and when taking final leave of prisoner she wept bitterly and clung passionately to him. ------------------------------------------------ Historic Australian Newspapers, 1803 to 1954 http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper Aherns in Australian Records http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~aherns/ahcrim.htm ------------------------------------------------
