I've written to Jevette and offered to post some sample pages for her so we can all see them but she doesn't know how to get them out of her program so she can send me all the right pieces. I suggested that she could copy/paste the html into a notepad file and also send me any images. I don't know if Expression Web is generating CSS or not. I work on a Mac so I'm not much help in telling her how to get me some sample pages. If someone can advise her, I'm happy to use my space for the test pages. I forgot to mention I use Expression web 2 or something like that the microsoft expressions bundle pack is what i have to build my site.
My site I am building doesn't look right when you view it in IE books looks right in Firefox. Why is that? How can I fix it?
I have built my site using a combination of FrontPage and my genealogy software PAF. The genealogy software builds the data pages and FrontPage is for creating all the other web pages that makes the site have more than just raw data. The combination has worked well for me. I expect you can do the same using Dreamweaver instead of FrontPage. But I wouldn't want to code a lot of genealogy data using just the FrontPage or Dreamweaver. _http://www.jacksonfamilygenealogy.com_ (http://www.jacksonfamilygenealogy.com) **************Get fantasy football with free live scoring. Craig, What I've done on my website sounds like it may be somewhat similar to what you want to do. Take a look at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~irishgirl/ and click on any of the surnames on the righthand side to be taken to a page for that surname, including what I call a "quick overview of my line of descent". However, I did not use Dreamweaver or anything similar, my pages are handcoded. However, after creating one page, it can be used as a template for additional pages. Hope this helps. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions. Good luck, Jane On 7/21/08, CRAIG MCDERMOTT <aussie1967@sky.com> wrote: > > What I am trying to do is basically build my tree for each family line on > my website without > having to use Family Tree Maker or the like. > > I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction on how I could > write a family tree in html using Dreamweaver or a similar tool. > >
Ray, Thanks for the reply. I am a member of a site similar but what I am trying to do is basically build my tree for each family line on my website without having to use Family Tree Maker or the like. I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction on how I could write a family tree in html using Dreamweaver or a similar tool. Once again thanks and good luck with your researching. I don't really know how to respond to your question, except to recommend other routes. Dreamweaver is a generic tool for maintaining webpages. It doesn't know anything about genealogy data - names, dates, places, relationships, sources, etc. If you have a genealogy database tool (i.e. FamilyTreeMaker, etc.), it may have an option to export your data as HTML, and from there you can put the information online. But even that is less than optimal, as you would have to export and upload to keep the website updated. Instead, I recommend a site like mine below, or perhaps other comparable sites through which you can maintain all of your information directly on the website. No uploading, no additional software, no knowledge of websites is needed. Just enter the information, save, and it's instantly online for anyone to see. You can read more about the site I have at the address below -- anyone from anywhere is welcome to post as much information as they like. There may be other comparable sites -- but in general, I believe this is the most efficient option available. ---------------- Ray Gurganus ray@gurganus.org http://www.gurganus.org/ourfamily ----- Original Message from CRAIG MCDERMOTT on 07/20/08 ----- Hi all, Can anyone advise/guide/tell me how to build my family tree using Dreamweaver? Hi all, Can anyone advise/guide/tell me how to build my family tree using Dreamweaver? I have tried with a PDF file but was not impressed!! Any help would be very much appreciated. Craig
I am writijng to get recommendations on the best software to use to turn a gedcom (or Legacy file) into a web site. I do design web sites for Dreamweaver but want something easy and quick to put my family tree up with. Glenny www.capriella.com Serving the goat community with quality affordable web sites since 1998
Glenny, I don't use Legacy as I'm on a Mac but Legacy 6 does have the capability of creating a web page direct from Legacy. Don't know what the finished product looks like. You might want to do a "baby" page of a couple of generations... just to see what it looks like and decide from there if you want to keep looking for another method. Are you sure you want your own site and not just a gedcom site such as World Connect? Seems to me that's the easiest way to get a .ged posted. Just a thought.... unless you have other goals besides a .gedcom.... photos..., documents....etc... I need advice on the exact setting of the ACCEPT-CHARSET argument in a web form, because currently, if they input ñ or á the cgiemail will send a space instead. Exactly how do I write the argument? Is there or isn't there a hyphen in ACCEPT-CHARSET ? Are there or aren't there quotes around the charset name? is "ISO-8859-2" an acceptable charset name? Why isn't it working? Tom Alciere webmaster@SurnamesByTown.com
You have text with commas in it in a field delimited with commas. For example, John Smith, Jr. in the NAME field and the next field is the BIRTHPLACE field. However, the comma in John Smith, Jr. will activate the delimiter, and John Smith will be in the NAME field, Jr. in the BIRTHPLACE field. Consider using & #44; (without space) instead of a comma. Your software won't interpret it as a comma, but when it prints into your HTML page, web browsers will display it as a comma. Tom Alciere webmaster@SurnamesByTown.com

Neil, I am not sure if anyone has answered your question but if not. I would not use Word as a basis for a web page. I would use Excel. Delimited simply means separated word or fields by commas, spaces, tabs, semicolons, etc. Entering the data into excel will do this automatically for you. You can save a worksheet as a web page. There are some considerations. A web page has a width limitation so creating, let us say, 50 columns in Excel and saving as a web page won't work very well. Excel is a wonderful application in that you can export into so many other formats. You can also sort your data and save using different sorts. When sorting in Excel, DO NOT select the text/cells. Simply click in the column you which to sort by and a basic method of sorting is using the toolbar sort. As always keep a backup copy of your file before manipulating the data.
