It is not true that you would need an ammended birth certificate in order to apply for a SS card back then. My husband has no birth certificate because none was ever issued, not even an ammended one, yet he had no trouble getting a Social Security card when he was old enough to apply. He has had no trouble collecting his benefits after he retired without having a birth certificate, either.
