I assume you have checked the divorce records in the counties where the girls were born, the counties where both grandfather and grandmothers parents were residing? Have you checked the paternal grandparents probate records to determine if they mentioned this son who conveniently disappeared? I have found that children are sometimes never told what happened to a disappearing father, yet their mother really knew...especially in the time frame you are searching.
