    1. [GEN-UNSOLVED-MYSTERIES-L] Mormon Massacre?
    2. I sent this posting to a number of relevant lists, but don't think I sent it to this one yet. If I have, I apologize for the duplication. Here is my mystery. I have been given a genealogy tip from a newly found SLUSHER researcher. She references a MORMON MASSACRE. I don't know for sure whether this refers to members of the religion or a surname (any spelling variant). She remembers reading about this massacre about 10 years ago while in the Washington County Library in Arkansas. (Evidently local people were involved. Victims? Surviviors?) It could have taken place anywhere, but she thought it might have been in either Missouri or Iowa. She knows it was pre 1860, but not the date. The only survivors of the Indian attack were children too young to describe what had happened. My ggg-grandfather was a survivor of just such a massacre. He was too young to even know his birthdate, but he was born about 1848-ish. He was taken in by a family that may have been named CLAYTON. They mistreated him and he ran away. He took a job in a coal mine, married the boss's daughter, and lived the rest of his life in Randolph County IL. We don't know how far he ran. Was it close by or far away from Randolph County? The Missouri/Iowa possible locations for this massacre also could fit. Does anyone has ANY INFORMATION to share or leads I could try to follow on this or a similar situation? Trying to knock a chink in a HUGE STONE WALL., any assistance will be gratefully appreciated. Cate Daniell New Mexico, USA
