Clammily Jane was one, if the book Buffalo Girls is to believed. Other less romantic?/outlandish? suggestions include an unwed pregnancy or some general sexual indiscretion, or a clerical error listing a Mark as a Mary (down right pedestrian compared to the sexual ambiguity suggestion). In any case, this is just speculation until I can find a male or female with a last name of Besch who was born to Johann and Rose in Albany, New York in 1867. When I find out what happened to him/her I may also come to know why. They had em, even back then and I bet she/he was not living in any circus! I bet Mary was treated like a Queen! :) Sorry folks.
