John Wesley WILLIAMS or STEWART b. March 1874 in Louisiana to Alexander and Amanda (Williams) Stewart both of whom were b. in TN; 1836 & 1823 respectively. Family legend has it he was adopted due to these facts: his parents were married in 1868 in Coahoma Co. MS; Amanda would have been 51yrs old when he was born and he was an only child. John married in 12/2/1892 to Lula Mae Lindsey b. 11/15/1874 in Ashley Co., AR. (Rumor has it they eloped) They had 6 children (all born in AR): Alexander who died as an infant, William b. 1895 married Velma Taylor, Amanda b. 1897 married Charles Smith, John b. 1898 never married; died in TX in 1937, Fanny who died as an infant, and Nannie b.1902 changed her name to Marie; last husband was Olaf Mooney. John Wesley disappeared after 1902 and before 1905. He was reputed to have been an alcoholic and had been sent away several times for "cures". Once as far as CT. There is also a story that he had lost a leg. Another family rumor is that John's mother was actually Amanda's sister or niece; she lived with them and it is rumored that Alexander took a fancy to her to put it delicately. Her name may have been Martha Williams. There was a dispute over John's middle name. My grandfather, William, said it was Wesley, but his sisters, Amanda and Nannie, said it was Williams. My mother and aunt would love to find out what happened to him. Their grandmother would not talk about him or mention his name (she wouldn't and didn't call her son, John, by his name either) and apparently the children couldn't recall exactly when John Wesley disappeared. He may have been part Native American or looked it (all the children did except John) as it was rumored his grandmother, a Jane Stewart - she died in 1903 in Ashley Co. AR- was a Native American.
