Hi! We're new, so we'll just jump right in: On the 1917-1918 WWI Draft Lists, DICKEY, Urban Stevens (b.1878) noted of Leavenworth KS, but also of Miami, TX (says lives with relatives) is shown to be incarcerated in Walla Walla (WA) Prison, and thus, we assume, did not go to war. Why? For what? When? How long? Background: DICKEY, Urbane Burrows, b. 1837 Clifford Twp., Susquehanna Co. PA to Walter and Sarah Resseguie Dickey; migrated late '50s - early '60s with sister Almeda (b. 1834) and brother-in-law CONKLIN, D.C. to Tecumseh, NE. Have found D.C. on farm there (1890), Almeda buried there (1896); no Urbane. The next clue we have is Urban in Walla Walla Prison. We believe Urban is Urbane's son (or grandson) for several reasons, not the least of which is his first name. The Stevens is most likely Urban's mother's (or grandmother's) maiden name (thus maybe Urbane's wife). Urban married (when? where?) CLARK, Olive M. (b. ??) and had a son DICKEY, Harold Carleton in 1910. In 1935 we find son Harold marrying in ME, divorcing, remarrying in 1949, and on railroad pension when he died 1965, ME. (Several Dickeys were railroad men.) Urbane had originally been our unsolved mystery because except for appearing on the 1850 PA census with his family, we've never seen a reference to him. A Resseguie researcher, privy to an old family manuscript, told us Urbane went to NE with Almeda, though we've personally seen nothing to verify or refute that. Urban Stevens appearing in Walla Walla wouldn't be inconsistent. Thus our unsolved mystery has become Urban Stevens Dickey and his incarceration in Walla Walla Prison. We suspect that the answer to why Urban suddenly appeared (and disappeared) here will also shed light on his father Urbane and wife Olive. We're at a loss where to look -- have tried WA GenWeb site, but found no prison info in Walla Walla except general history and a riot account. Went to the actual prison site which was very nice but didn't mention availability of, or access to, inmate info. Followed several links from Cyndi's and found info on other prisons, but not this one. Is there a tried and true formula for ferreting out this sort of info? Any help would be very much appreciated! And if we're going about this wrong, please tell us, and point us in the right direction! Thank you for your time!
