Ergot, the mold that infects rye, causes ergotism, a malady also know as (I believe) St. John's Fire. There was an outbreak as late as the 1950s in a small French village, and "peculiar behavior" is a mild description of the symptoms ! Ergot is also, I believe, related chemically to LSD....that gives you some idea of the mani- festations. Steve
