    3. Dear Seekers: The mystery of 'peculiar behavior' in colonial times, especially, might be a result of toxic poisoning of some sort. Believe I've read - or seen on TV - that ergot poisoning is from fermented (for want of a better word) rye flour. Women, being the main cooks, of a domicile, would no doubt, sample various plants, herbs, etc., and could become poisoned by toxins that would lead to 'strange or peculiar' behavior. I believe ergot poisoning results in hallucinations, at best, and death, at worst. Perhaps Alice Martin was a victim of such poisoning. There were probably many others who were like victins of this but Alice Martin is documented so well, apparently because there was such a 'bloody' death of a small child involved, which caused such revulsion and condemnation against Alice. Well - food for thought. Wishing you all small mysteries to solve - have a great week ahead! Shirley: bobert@panacom.com
