J.K.KIDD, The surname of WOOD(S) is a surname that appears in the Quaker families. Any chance that, as a Yankee Spy, she may have been doing Gods Work. Could the wifes' maiden name have been WOOD? As you may know, the Quakers were heavily involved in the operation and setting up of the Underground Railway. Information of individual Quaker invovlement is obsure at best. Their level of secrecy would be envied in the counter- intelligence field. This is a website listing some Underground Railway Conductors. I haven't visited for a while, but I'm sure the surname WOOD appears (parents of the mother Mary??). http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Plains/2064/undrgrd.htm Just a thought! Cheers Murray McCombs
Hello all, Me and some of my fellow PARKE & SAPPINGTON line genealogists have a puzzle for anyone out there. So far we know that Jonah PARKE & Margaret SAPPINGTON had 11 kids. We have figured out the lines and how they connect and to whom. The problem is with their last child Nancy Elle(n) who married David BAYLES. Nancy & David both Died in 1866 for reasons unknown. There were no epidemics at that time that we know of. They were in the Midwest Kentucky or St. Louis. We have no idea what happened to them. Their kids were unaffected so its doubtful it was due to an epidemic. However their son, Lewis does seem to drop off the face of the earth as far as lineage is concerned. Wondering if anyone has a clue. I am thinking he killed them. Someone said that they heard (or read) a rumor that he may have died in jail.
My g-g-g grandfather, Alexander Green, was born about 1824 in Pennsylvania and is listed as a 26-year-old farmer on the 1850 U.S. census for Auburn Twp, Susquehanna County, PA. He married Jane Evans (1828-1873) and together they had 9 children. Sometime between 1865 when their youngest child was born and 1870 when Jane Evans Green is listed alone on the U.S. census, Alexander disappeared. The story passed down is that he went into the woods one day to chop wood and was never seen again. A search found no sign of him nor his axe. Some thought that a wild animal may have gotten him but I believe he just took off for parts unknown and never contacted his family again. I was told that the youngest child, George Green (1865-1911), disappeared with no word and was gone for 30 years. He returned home, terminally ill, three weeks before his death and is buried in a grave near his mother's in a small cemetery in South Auburn, PA. Charles B. Some Speculations: > Are there any financial "types" on this list that would know the effect of > cornering the USA Bond market in 1792 ??? If they (Alexander Macomb) had managed to corner the USA Bond market, they would in effect hold all of the USA Government debt. Whether a "call" on the debt could be effected or not is up to debate, but bonds finance all of the Government programs (while taxes are supposed to pay off the debt a year later). Whatever their agenda, the USA government was in jepordy in 1792. The interesting thing is that 1792 marked a number of key events in migration out of the USA. 1790 was the first National Census, and by 1792, many Americans were forced to move to Canada for British tendencies (often referred to as the Later Loyalist List). Murray's NOTE: no less than 7 McCOMB(S) are listed as British aliens, living and working in the USA, at the outbreak of the War of 1812. One is actually a teacher for the USA Navy and leaves for Hong Kong in 1812. A more present day example of this would be the Billionaire HUNT brothers, c 1980 in Texas who attempted to corner the silver market in an attempt to print their own currency. The USA Government managed to foil this attempt. In actual fact, all countries are relying on the investment agendas of holders of their National Bond issues (Banks around the world are probably the largest owners of National Bond issues), but pressure has undoubtly been applied with a threat to "call" a particular or entire bond issue, to affect Political Policy. Some thoughts, but most likely more complex than expressed here. Cheers Murray McCombs
I am seaarching for ANY children of John J. Erickson. He was from Pittsburgh, Pa. He was a Merchant Marine Seaman. He married several women on his journeys, and had children to them...I know one of them was named Joseph (?) Erickson. B/pl. Unknown. He was born about 1943.Joes mother was named Anna ? Erickson. She was also from Pgh, Pa.She married a Charles Warren, after John died. (In California.) John had various jobs...Butcher, Boxer, Guitar player, Truck Driver; in addition to claiming to belong to the Merchant Marines.(Perhaps as a Civilian Employee ?) He spent time in his native Pittsburgh, Pa; as well as in the Bay area of San Francisco, and Oakland...Sometimes staying for periods of time until "duty called." Some children, now in their 50's, may not know what ever happened to this man ! John was last known to have lived in the Old Auburn area, in early 1947. Ships may however have taken him to many parts of the USA, and other parts of the world..... If you, or someone you know, had a Father named John Erickson, and he was a tall thin blond Swede, during WWll, please contact me. Especially if he mentioned the Merchant Marines !!! We would love to locate all of us, and solve this mystery. I know that he died in 1947, in Ca. I recently found one Brother, had 2, search for another, (JOE), and any others, Male or female, out there ! Thanks for listening to me. My family story includes JOHN FOLKS. He was born in Ohio in 1835, and his father was born in Georgia. Apparently there was abuse in his family and he ran away as a child. The next sighting is 1861 in Sonoma County, California when he was 25 years old. I would like to know how he got there and what he was running away from. Sound familiar to anyone? Thanks- Lynne Folks Steinfeld steinfeld@mail.tqci.net
This is a classic case of unsolved mystery shrouded in intrigue. Ardail A. Lyons b. ca 1905 in California, was once married to Agosto Devido aka August Branetti. Details of this difficult marriage are unnecessary. The couple was living in Stockton, San Joaquin County. Ardail learned of an alleged murder committed by Devido and his partner in Denver. She lived in fear of some reprisal, either by Devido or his partner. In 1931, Devido, in a usual bout of drunkeness and abuse, was threatening her with a butcher knife. She grabbed his pistol and shot blindly to frighten the man. He fell, dying, from the chance encounter with the bullit and died where he lay. Ardail Lyons Devido was sentenced to San Quentin State Prison, where she served time before being transferred to Tehachapi State Prison. Eventually, she was pardoned, and returned to Stockton where she married Lewis F. Gallie. All seemed normal for many years. Sometime in 1951, Ardail was acting frightened again. Gallie claimed that he had found her hiding under the house. In June of 1951, she sent four letters, each containing partial suggestions of a will, written should anything happen to her. That month, she withdrew money from the Bank of America in Stockton, and placed in trust of a local attorney. She then disappeared. It is known that Ardail was living as of the first week of May, 1952, as a telephone call was documented. Gallie claimed to his family that he knew nothing of her disappearance, and was greatly distraught over the occurance. Court documents prove otherwise. At the first indication of her disappearance, Gallie filed for divorce, stating desertion as the primary cause. Several years later, he declared to his family that, according to state law, he had declared Ardail legally dead. This also has been disproven. Any suggestions on this peculiar case would be greatly appreciated. Attempts to obtain information from local law enforcement and the FBI were fruitless. There is no Social Security Death Index listing that matches her information. Here is further data that may assist: Name: Ardail A. Lyons aka, Adele Lyons, Adele Buchignani, Adele Devido, Adele Gallie. Other spellings Adale, Adalle, Ardale. Parents: Alexander Lyons ne Loyn, Minnie Margaret Shych or Beck Born: ca. 1905 in San Francisco Residence: San Francisco, Sacramento, Stockton Spouses: George Mert Buchignani (div), Agosto Devido aka Branetti (dec.), Lewis F. Gallie (dec.) Issue: Leroy G. Buchignani (dec.) Other known living relatives: none Thanks to all in advance, Su Jacobsen
Hello again, An brick wall is not appropriate for this list when the circumstances are not considered strange. Strange meaning : out of the ordinary, weird, mysterious, questionable As I said in the welcome message just because we can't find them does not make them appropriate for this list. If you can't find them because there is talk that they were murdered, kidnapped, or lost their minds and wandered off, then your material is appropriate for this list. There have been some very good examples of what is appropriate for this list posted already. I'm sorry if it upsets anyone, but I really wanted this list to be purely "strange" stuff kind of like the show "Unsolved Mysteries." I guess that's what I'm saying-- The show Unsolved Mysteries wouldn't put a person's genealogy on TV just because they couldn't find proof on paper that they existed, so if you don't think they would do a show on it, don't post it here. I must say that I am really disappointed that people aren't ok with this idea. (I'm not addressing this to those of you that just wanted an explanation and are not upset because I'm limiting what can be posted) I had this rosy idea of a really different mailing list and now people just want to post their brick walls on it. Don't get me wrong. I have a few brick walls myself that are frustrating, so I do sympathize. However, I didn't create this list for that purpose. I don't understand why people want to get mad at me for that reason. Is there no brick wall list? Let me know. I may consider creating one. Thanks for your ear, Nicole (and David)

Martha Jane Melton was the sister of James Melton who was married to Ann Foster. Ann Foster Melton was engaged in an illicit romance for some years with Tom Dula who apparently visited her regularly. According to court records, Tom Dula and Ann Foster Melton slept in the same bed with Ann with James Melton present in the same room. It was a big one room house with three beds. James is reported to have slept alone. James was a cobbler and kept the community (and Tom Dula) in shoes. The court records describes him as a good and Godly man. Ann Melton's cousin, Laura Foster was also in love with Tom Dula. Laura was knifed through the heart and buried in a shallow grave. Both Tom and Ann stood trial for Laura's murder. Ann spent two years in prison and later died of the "pock" (syphilis). Tom Dula was hung. According to court records both Ann and Laura had syphilis. James Melton, Martha Melton's brother, came out smelling like a rose. He later remarried and fathered several children. Today, some believe that Ann Melton actually did the killing.

Hi all, This is my first posting: Alexander Macomb Sr. [legal name is spelled McCOMB(S)] was granted over 3 milion acres of Upper New York State in 1791, called the Macomb Land Patent. Alexander Macomb Sr. father was John Macomb. John was captured as a Tory Miltitia at the Battle of Bennington in 1777, and went before the Albany Committe of Safety (patriot court). He refused to sign a document professing his guilt as a Tory sympathizer, was sent home under guard to await his fate, but managed to escape. The location of his wife and all but two children were never found. Earlier genealogists were looking for the surname "Macomb", which was an alias. In an effort to seek balance in family affairs and the contenious frontier, he had each son pander to the two opposing Governments. William dealt with the British, and Alex dealt with the Americans. William was the MPP, representing the Detroit frontier, of the British Parilament in Niagara, Upper Canada in 1790. Alex returned to New York and was granted a large Land Patent in 1791 from the then President Hamilton. The following year, with financing from friendly NY businessmen and a partner, they attempted to corner the USA bondmarket (purpose unknown). With a rising bond market, and a failed attempt to fund the financial adventure, both Alex and his partner landed in jail. Alex was forced to sell his large Land Patent to Land Speculators to pay back his debts, but his partner remained in jail and eventually died a poor man. Congress pushed for charges of treason, but President Hamilton intervened and Alex walked away a free man. As fate would have it, this was a very good thing for the USA. Alex's youngest son was a war hero of the War of 1812, and saved Upper and Western NY State from falling into the British domain. General Alex Jr. became Chief of Armed Services (USA) from 1828 to 1841. Alexander Sr. oldest son John became an Architect and built one of President Hamiltons estates, as well as various Lighthouses on the Eastern Seaboard, but was killed in 1811 defending a British passenger ship (he was a passenger) from a French marauder. A statue of him honours his deed in Britian. Alex returned to Detroit and eventually died in Washington DC at his son General Alex's residence. John the father, William and Alex Sr. eventually became USA citizens in 1798, but with a definite Tory leaning. The big question is WHY? How did he escape the treasonable offense? Why did President Hamilton protect him? Are there any financial "types" on this list that would know the effect of cornering the USA Bond market in 1792 ??? What happened to the missing Wife and Children of John Macomb (McCOMBs) after 1777? Murray McCombs mmccombs@interlog.com
Hello All, First things first, I want to ask you guys to please bear with me for the next few days. Since this morning's Rootsweb e-zine post, I have been extremely busy with new subscriptions and various other kinds of explanations. So, if I mess up on the list and post something twice or any other silly thing like that, please forgive me. Second, I owe Applejack2@webtv.net an apology. I did not mean to post that message to the list. As the post was public, so is the apology. Mind you this next section is NOT meant ONLY for Applejack! However, on the subject of "brick wall" postings, I want to say that I have been seeing some postings that should not be on this list. I wasn't kidding when I wrote the welcome message, so please review it. If you have a problem with it, I'm willing to discuss it, but most of the rules will stand because this is obviously going to be a busy list. That being the case, there will be very little off topic posting allowed. If you receive a message that your post was off topic, please be assured that you are not the only one who has gotten one. I try to send them privately. If you see a repeat offender, please notify me. Although I eventually read every single message, with the traffic I got today, it may be a few days before I get to everything. I try not to be too judgmental, as one person's mystery may not be the same thing I consider a mystery. In the future I will leave it up to the list members to decide if something is off topic. Please keep in mind, though, that I will not allow this to become a "BRICK WALL" list. I believe there is another list designed specifically for that purpose, and I think it is only fair that I be allowed to decide the topic of a list I created. If you would rather a list that allows something else, feel free to start your own.:) I hope eveyone understands this. I'm really not trying to be a witch. I also want you guys to know that discussion of each mystery is allowed on this list. The posting does not have to end with just the facts of the mystery. I don't mind discussion as long as it pertains to one of the unsolved mystery. In fact, I would love to read everyone's theories. Smiles to all, Nicole Burgess Listowner dwburgess@worldnet.att.net
Please contact Alan about this one at suffolk@findersmall.com -------snip------------------ If you were a 19-year-old preacher turned loose in the New World, what would you do? I wish I knew! William John Gooding (my great-great grandfather) was born in Tuddenham St Martin, Suffolk, England, on October 17, 1812. After many years of being exposed to the teachings of Samuel Collins, of Grundisburgh, he was baptised, in December, 1829, at Bethesda Chapel, Ipswich. Soon after, this 17-year-old was asked to conduct a prayer meeting in a large room in Witnesham; on January 11, 1831, he entered the pulpit to preach for the first time. It having been noted abroad that young Gooding was preaching, says his In Memoriam in the 1884 Gospel Herald, he was asked to exercise his gifts before the church. In the beginning of 1832, a coloured man, Richard Preston, came . . . from Nova Scotia to collect money to build a chapel for the Africans resident there. He also asked that young men with warm hearts would offer their services to assist him in preaching the Gospel to his coloured brethren in the colony. Mr Gooding was the only one who volunteered to go. Later: Mr Gooding sailed from Liverpool July 13, 1832 -- his father paying all expenses -- arriving in Halifax, Nova Scotia, on the 22nd of August. He was cordially received by the coloured people, among whom he laboured with many seals to his ministry. In less than two years, however, he returned to England. That wasnt the end of his travels, though. Apparently, his American (sic) friends still felt and evinced an unabated interest in Mr Gooding and kept up a correspondence with him. This, doubtless, partially accounted for his desire to go back to the scene of his early labours. He resolved to return; but, we believe, this step he always regarded as being an unwise one. April 12th, 1846, he sailed from London, carrying with him letters of commendation from the Association of Strict Baptist Ministers in Suffolk, at which great regret was expressed at his leaving them. On landing in New York he received an invitation from the Baptist Church in Jersey City, but his stay was brief, as the people there wanted him to make some additions to the doctrines he had preached. This, he said, he could not, dared not do. . . . In less than a year, we find him crossing the Atlantic again for his native land . . . . He settled at Hartley Row, Hants, then moved to Richmond, Surrey, where he died in 1883. One would have thought, after such a heady start to his calling as a preacher, that the records would give glowing reports of his progress, both in Canada and the US. Not so! Letter from the Canadian Baptist Archives dated September 1, 1994 begins: Dear Mr. Gooding, I have looked everywhere there is to look in this Archives for any information regarding William John Gooding. He is never mentioned in the periodicals at hand. You may wish to make further inquiries with the Baptist Archives at Acadian University . . . Letter from the United Baptist Convention of the Atlantic Provinces dated September 20, 1994 begins: Dear Mr. Gooding, . . . I have been unable to find any references in our Atlantic Baptist Historical Collection to Reverend Goodings presence in Nova Scotia. I have forwarded a copy of your letter to Reverend Philip Griffin-Allwood . . . Letter from the Public Archives of Nova Scotia Dated November 23, 1995 begins: Dear Mr. Gooding, As you have already been in touch with Rev Dr. Griffin-Allwood, who is the leading historian, I am inclined to think that W. J. Gooding did not remain among the African Baptists of Nova Scotia. ... nor is Gooding mentioned in any scholarly study of Richard Preston with which I am familiar. Letter from Ms Virginia Clark, Researcher, Halifax, Nova Scotia dated January 28, 1996 begins: Dear Mr. Gooding, I have not been successful in the hunt for the Rev. William John. I read the Halifax newspapers of August 1832 looking for any mention of his arrival, and found none. . . . References to Richard Preston . . . were checked for Goodings name, with no success. Letter from the Seventh day Baptist Historical Society dated January 30, 1996 begins: Dear Mr. Gooding, I searched our records and find no reference to Rev. William John Gooding. Letter from the the New-York Historical Society dated January 31, 1996 begins: Dear Mr. Gooding, I am sorry to report that I am unable to locate information regarding Reverend William John Gooding . . . . I have written two letters to New Jersey in hopes of finding out what happened to my great-great-grandfather. Where did he disappear to? Can somebody throw some light on this subject, please? I have one outlandish theory: Is it possible his head was turned by a woman of doubtful virtue on his first Atlantic crossing, was persuaded to go with her to New York and pretended he was helping the African-Americans in Nova Scotia? After all, he *was* good-looking!!! And, to reinforce that wild theory, he "returned" to New Jersey in 1846, NOT Nova Scotia, scene of his earlier "triumphs". The reason he left so suddenly the second time? His "girlfriend" had found a new love! Any and all theories will be considered, however far-fetched. Alan Gooding, London, Ontario, Canada.
