Unknown. He was born about 1943.Joes mother was named Anna ? Erickson. She was also from Pgh, Pa.She married a Charles Warren, after John died. (In California.) John had various jobs...Butcher, Boxer, Guitar player, Truck Driver; in addition to claiming to belong to the Merchant Marines.(Perhaps as a Civilian Employee ?) He spent time in his native Pittsburgh, Pa; as well as in the Bay area of San Francisco, and Oakland...Sometimes staying for periods of time until "duty called." Some children, now in their 50's, may not know what ever happened to this man ! John was last known to have lived in the Old Auburn area, in early 1947. Ships may however have taken him to many parts of the USA, and other parts of the world..... If you, or someone you know, had a Father named John Erickson, and he was a tall thin blond Swede, during WWll, please contact me. Especially if he mentioned the Merchant Marines !!! We would love to locate all of us, and solve this mystery. I know that he died in 1947, in Ca. Michael Van MEDLEY was my nephew. He was born 26 Nov 1959 in Newton County, TX and was shot and killed 13 Jul 1984 in Crosby, Harris Co, TX. (Harris Co, TX includes City of Houston, TX) Michael received his degree from SFA, Nacogdoches, TX in May of 1984. He was still living in Nacogdoches but had been employed by a telephone company in close-by Lufkin, TX. He was a member of a local baseball team that was primarily made up of his Fraternity Brothers. This team was sponsored by a wrecking company in Conroe, TX. (The connection of the owner of the wrecking service to the team/Michael is unknown by author). On 12 Jul 1984 Michael left Lufkin/Nacogdoches to deliver telephone system to the owner of the wrecking yard in Conroe, TX. He was to play a game of golf and spend the night in the home of the wrecking service owner which was located in Crosby, TX before installing the phone system the next day. Harris County law enforcement informed us that apparently, someone had entered the two-story home in Crosby, TX, shooting the wrecking yard owner in the head in the upstairs bedroom, as he was watching T.V. and then Michael, who was in the downstairs bedroom or shower had started up the stairs, met the gunman on the landing and was also shot in the head. Michael's car was found with the trunk open and the uninstalled telephones still inside. A car, stolen in Dallas, was found parked in the driveway. The wrecking yard owner's car was later found in New Orleans, LA. We were told that chances are slim that they will ever solve the case. Neighbors apparently heard nothing. It will be 14 years on 13 Jul 1998 and I would like to pursue where they have apparently left off. I realize that they have 100 murder cases per year in Harris Co, TX and this one is probably long since buried. I can't afford to hire anyone to investigate for me so... I plan to go to Harris Co, TX and Crosby, TX this next week and try to obtain copies of the investigation, autopsies, and newspaper articles. Supposedly this is open records information but I also know that nothing is ever as easy as it sounds. Any hints or suggestions of material that I should try to review or avenues that I might pursue would be appreciated. Later, SUE OWENS sueowens@jas.net

I have scanned the county list of Md.'s and he was not on it. He is not listed in the large village cemetery nor does he appear anywhere in the Delaware County historical records. I have posted on the genweb DONOVAN page, but no hits yet. Can anyone help us? Jim Cooros East Meredith NY.
Christopher, I trust the excerpt below (from your email) means that you have checked the Hale Collection at the Connecticut State Library. It is a set of typewritten volumes that contain transcriptions of tombstones in all the cemeteries in the state as of about 1933. Its production was a WPA project commissioned by the state librarian (Hale) at the time. It is indexed. Bill In a message dated 98-06-25 20:08:29 EDT, you write: << I also checked (by mail) various sources at the Connecticut State Library which also houses the State Archives. No cemetery monument or marker has been found. >>
Greetings to all fellow detectives in this newsgroup! Levi Smith was my mother's paternal grandfather. Her father, Francis Levi Smith, seems never to have talked to her about his father, which is the beginning of the mystery. In fact, Francis Levi Smith had a half-brother that my mother never knew about until he (Francis Levi) died, and this half-brother phoned from Connecticut. Even Francis' wife did not know anything about her husband's father; she was the informant for his death certificate, and both name and place of birth of Francis' father is "Unknown". My mother never knew the name of her grandfather or a single detail of his life until I found him in my research. Levi Smith was born in 1867 in Worcestershire, England. There he married Emma Jane Wright, and together in 1888 they immigrated to the United States, settling in Ansonia, New Haven County, Connecticut. Their first child, Emma Bertha was born in Ansonia in 1889. A second child, named William, was stillborn. A third child (somewhat of a mystery) is indicated, but no record can be found. Finally, my grandfather, Francis Levi was born on 2 Nov 1893. His birth certificate is the last record we have found of the father, Levi, while he was alive. On the birth certificates of his children he is listed as a "roller", laborer, and machinist, in that order. He worked for the Ansonia Brass and Copper Company. The death of Levi Smith is the mystery I would like to solve. There are several strange things about it. A family story my mother's brother vaguely recalled was that Emma died, the father (Levi) remarried, and then left home (or died), and Francis was raised by his new stepmother. Strange story, when you consider what really happened. The records tell a very different story. Here are the facts: Levi is listed in the Ansonia Directory (includes Birmingham, Derby, Shelton and Seymour) from 1889 to 1893. In 1894, neither he or wife, Emma is listed. This directory normally notes deaths or removals from the area. Again in 1895, there is no listing. In 1896 and '97 the Directory lists Emma Smith, widow of Levi. Her address has changed. There is no listing for 1898 or '99 and the directory for 1900 could not be found (checked Ansonia and the National Archives). Emma had married John Walker in 1898, but he is also absent from the directories until 1901 when it reports that he had removed to Seymour near the Ansonia town boundary. What really happened to Levi? The simple explanation would be that he died around 1894, and that is, in fact, my primary theory. There are, however, enough oddities surrounding his supposed death to cast some doubt. No Certificate of Death can be found, though these records were kept faithfully by that time. I checked Ansonia and all surrounding towns for Certificate of Death and/or probate records, and even checked New York State and New Jersey for a record of death. I also checked (by mail) various sources at the Connecticut State Library which also houses the State Archives. No cemetery monument or marker has been found. They probably belonged to the Methodist Church, but the one in Ansonia from that time burned in 1943 taking the records with it. No obituary could be found in the Ansonia newspaper, which would likely list a death even if the deceased had moved away. Levi seems to have vanished without a trace. The second theory would be that he died away from Ansonia, which might account for some (but by no means all) of the missing records. A couple other anomalous records: Emma's next child (of husband John Walker) was born in New Jersey, 14 May 1899 Why in New Jersey? Emma ran a boarding house for several years after she married John Walker (who she soon divorced). Why, according to the Ansonia Directory, did she "remove" to Elmira, New York in 1906, only to be back in Ansonia the following year, operating a boarding house at a different address? (Isn't there a women's prison in Elmira?) We're not sure that she was divorced from John Walker, though it would seem that way. It would also be possible that he died. The burning questions for me and my family are: When did Levi Smith die? Where did Levi Smith die? Why did Levi Smith die? Why did Levi Smith's own son never talk about him, not even to mention that his natural father had died when he was a toddler? I'd love to hear other possible theories or any information that would help solve this mystery. Many thanks for listening to my tale! Happy hunting, Christopher Bryce Personal Coach Greenville, SC
SUBJECT OF MYSTERY: Leonard S. SPICER (born 1893/KY) LAST SEEN: Wood River, Illinois (about1923-24) Hello Fellow Sherlock Holmes'! Please read my plea for help, and feel free to pass this information on to anyone who may be able to help with this investigation! I will post Leonards lineage following my story, so as not to clutter it with numbers. Leonard S. SPICER, son of a well-to-do and well-thought-of Hickman County, Kentuckian family, James Calvin & Nancy EVANS SPICER, left his home and three children, in Columbus, Hickman County, Kentucky, in 1923, and never returned! His father, "Calvin", was one of the ten famous SPICER brothers of Hickman County, born to Rev. James H. SPICER and Frances LUTEN SPICER. Rev. J.H. was a traveling Methodist Minister and farmer, born in South Carolina. Rev. J.H.'s father, Thomas SPICER, was born in North Carolina, and grandfather, James SPICER, was married in North Carolina and some sources say that J.H. was also, born there. I have no absolute proof of either one, but more reliable sources say South Carolina, so that's the one I go with. (Father) Calvin fought in the Civil War, for the Confedercy, along with his two older brothers, Henry Thomas and King Solomon, and lost a hand as a result of the war. Leonard had 5 sibblings, Luther M., Albert A., Lewler Mauda, Ivy Earnest, and Clarence, of which he was the youngest. Rumor has it that he was the "black sheep" of the family. I have been told that he loved his booze. Leonard, my grandfather, married my grandmother, Georgia M. COLE, daughter of Boyd Charles COLE and (first wife) Georgia Emma GIBSON (who also lived in Columbus). My grandmother, Georgia M. COLE was raised by her father and his second wife, Josie GREER. Rumor has it that my grandmother's mother (Georgia Emma GIBSON) died when my grandmother (Georgia M.) was born. I say "rumor" because I have no absolute proof of these things. They have just been told to me over the years, by first one then another. That is, when I could get anyone to talk about the situation at all! Relatives have been very, shall I say, cautious, about giving out any information whatsoever! Leonard and Georgia M.(COLE) SPICER had three children, Mae Elizabeth, James Charles (J.C.), and Mary Geneva. Geneva was my Mother. My grandmother, Georgia, died with pheumonia, the day after Mother was born (January, 1923). My grandfather, Leonard, immediately gave my Mother up for adoption. And she was only weeks old when she was adopted by the only grandparents that I ever really knew, George Lee RODGERS and Ruth BYNUM RODGERS, also from Hickman County, KY (Moscow, to be exact). Immediately after the adoption took place, Leonard left his 6 year old son, J.C. and his 3 year old daughter, Mae, with Georgia's parents (COLE's) and went to Wood River, Illinois, to seek employment, never to return for the children. J.C., eventually, went to live with his Uncle Hub COLE (in Columbus) to help him on his farm. J.C. died at the young age of 19, from pheumonia. Mae continued to live with her grandparents. After her (step) grandmother died, her grandfather was mean to her, by all accounts, and she was eventually put in an orphanage, at the age of about 12, through the Hickman County Court system, where she stayed until she was old enough to be released on her own. I'm not sure if that was 18 or 21, but I think it was 21. She, eventually, moved to Detroit, Michigan, married Ross Neldon and had a family. She, also, died and was buried there in 1995. All of her children live in Michigan. Mother lived in Moscow, with her adoptive parents, until she was old enough to get out on her own. She then went to Detroit. That is where she met and married my Father, Claudie Morefield, a widower with 2 grown children, who was also born and raised in Graves and Carlisle Counties, Kentucky. They moved back to Hickman County and had their family. My brother, Danny, and me. Mother died in 1985. Leonard's three children were always in contact with each other, even after Mother's adoption. Mother and Aunt Mae attended J.C.'s funeral, they spent time together at Mother's adoptive parents home, etc.. I always wondered why my grandparents didn't adopt all three children, as they never had any except Mother. That's something I will never know for sure. Mother tried to locate Leonard over the years, but to no avail. He never returned to Kentucky, as far as anyone knows. Uncle Hub saw him in Wood River, when he also went there to seek employment, shortly after he left. But Uncle Hub returned to Kentucky and that was the last time that Leonard was seen by any of the family. Ferrell SPICER, Leonard's uncle, named him in his will, but he didn't come to his funeral when he died, nor did he come to claim his inherritance. The courts tried to locate him, at that time, to no avail. This was in 1940. One of my cousins, Aunt Mae's youngest daughter, and I have searched endlessly and can't find any information on him after he left KY. He was only 28 years old when he left, and I am inclined to believe that he has another family somewhere, who may or may not know about his past family. I did locate a Leonard SPICER in the Social Security Death Index, who I really believe is him. It said he died in 1963, but it did not tell WHERE he died! If this is him, there surely must be someone out there who knows something about him and his life after he left KY. I would greatly appreciate any information that any of you may have, or can dig up, about Leonard. Or point me in a direction that I may not have thought of, in my search for him. Anything, no matter how simple it may sound to you, may be of help to me. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who has anything to offer!!!! I would love to find out something, before I die. That was Mother's wish, but she wasn't able to accomplish it in her lifetime. Maybe, with your help, I will be able too! Thank you in advance! If you were a 19-year-old preacher turned loose in the New World, what would you do? I wish I knew! William John Gooding (my great-great grandfather) was born in Tuddenham St Martin, Suffolk, England, on October 17, 1812. After many years of being exposed to the teachings of Samuel Collins, of Grundisburgh, he was baptised, in December, 1829, at Bethesda Chapel, Ipswich. Soon after, this 17-year-old was asked to conduct a prayer meeting in a large room in Witnesham; on January 11, 1831, he entered the pulpit to preach for the first time. It having been noted abroad that young Gooding was preaching, says his In Memoriam in the 1884 Gospel Herald, he was asked to exercise his gifts before the church. In the beginning of 1832, a coloured man, Richard Preston, came . . . from Nova Scotia to collect money to build a chapel for the Africans resident there. He also asked that young men with warm hearts would offer their services to assist him in preaching the Gospel to his coloured brethren in the colony. Mr Gooding was the only one who volunteered to go. Later: Mr Gooding sailed from Liverpool July 13, 1832 -- his father paying all expenses -- arriving in Halifax, Nova Scotia, on the 22nd of August. He was cordially received by the coloured people, among whom he laboured with many seals to his ministry. In less than two years, however, he returned to England. That wasnt the end of his travels, though. Apparently, his American (sic) friends still felt and evinced an unabated interest in Mr Gooding and kept up a correspondence with him. This, doubtless, partially accounted for his desire to go back to the scene of his early labours. He resolved to return; but, we believe, this step he always regarded as being an unwise one. April 12th, 1846, he sailed from London, carrying with him letters of commendation from the Association of Strict Baptist Ministers in Suffolk, at which great regret was expressed at his leaving them. On landing in New York he received an invitation from the Baptist Church in Jersey City, but his stay was brief, as the people there wanted him to make some additions to the doctrines he had preached. This, he said, he could not, dared not do. . . . In less than a year, we find him crossing the Atlantic again for his native land . . . . He settled at Hartley Row, Hants, then moved to Richmond, Surrey, where he died in 1883. One would have thought, after such a heady start to his calling as a preacher, that the records would give glowing reports of his progress, both in Canada and the US. Not so! Letter from the Canadian Baptist Archives dated September 1, 1994 begins: Dear Mr. Gooding, I have looked everywhere there is to look in this Archives for any information regarding William John Gooding. He is never mentioned in the periodicals at hand. You may wish to make further inquiries with the Baptist Archives at Acadian University . . . Letter from the United Baptist Convention of the Atlantic Provinces dated September 20, 1994 begins: Dear Mr. Gooding, . . . I have been unable to find any references in our Atlantic Baptist Historical Collection to Reverend Goodings presence in Nova Scotia. I have forwarded a copy of your letter to Reverend Philip Griffin-Allwood . . . Letter from the Public Archives of Nova Scotia Dated November 23, 1995 begins: Dear Mr. Gooding, As you have already been in touch with Rev Dr. Griffin-Allwood, who is the leading historian, I am inclined to think that W. J. Gooding did not remain among the African Baptists of Nova Scotia. ... nor is Gooding mentioned in any scholarly study of Richard Preston with which I am familiar. Letter from Ms Virginia Clark, Researcher, Halifax, Nova Scotia dated January 28, 1996 begins: Dear Mr. Gooding, I have not been successful in the hunt for the Rev. William John. I read the Halifax newspapers of August 1832 looking for any mention of his arrival, and found none. . . . References to Richard Preston . . . were checked for Goodings name, with no success. Letter from the Seventh day Baptist Historical Society dated January 30, 1996 begins: Dear Mr. Gooding, I searched our records and find no reference to Rev. William John Gooding. Letter from the the New-York Historical Society dated January 31, 1996 begins: Dear Mr. Gooding, I am sorry to report that I am unable to locate information regarding Reverend William John Gooding . . . . I have written two letters to New Jersey in hopes of finding out what happened to my great-great-grandfather. Where did he disappear to? Can somebody throw some light on this subject, please? I have one outlandish theory: Is it possible his head was turned by a woman of doubtful virtue on his first Atlantic crossing, was persuaded to go with her to New York and pretended he was helping the African-Americans in Nova Scotia? After all, he *was* good-looking!!! And, to reinforce that wild theory, he "returned" to New Jersey in 1846, NOT Nova Scotia, scene of his earlier "triumphs". The reason he left so suddenly the second time? His "girlfriend" had found a new love! Any and all theories will be considered, however far-fetched. Alan Gooding, London, Ontario, Canada.
Hi all, Further to this mystery, I did a little homework. >>>>>>>>>>>>> Alex returned to New York and won a large Land Patent in 1791 from the then Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton. The following year, with financing from friendly NY businessmen and a partner, William Duer, they attempted to corner the USA bondmarket. With a rising bond market, and a failed attempt to fund the financial adventure, both Alex and his partner landed in jail. <<<<<<<<<<<<< Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton responible for issuing the first USA Banknote in 1791, and establishing the Bank of the United States just before this Treasonable Offence. So the "Treasonable Offence" is centered around the establishment of the BANK...I think. The Federal Government also assumed all National War debt and imposed excise and trade taxes. The Federalists were also supporting a closer association with Britian and shuning the French Replublic (very odd!!!). Alexander Hamilton was married into the well known Schuyler Family of NY and lead his fight to ratify the US Constitution beginning in New York (Ah-ha...the New York connection). Wish I knew more about the effect of "Cornering Bonds" during this time period. Cheers Murray McCombs

Searching for any information on my grandfather, Henri de Paauw. Born Soeste, Holland, 1886. Left his wife and 5 children in England and arrived New York aboard the "Bremen", March 1934. Possibly heading for Detroit. They were to join him. Never seen or heard from again. My grandmother eventually remarried and immigrated here to Australia where she died 15 years ago. Did Henri remarry in the U.S.? Die suddenly? Return to Holland? Any suggestions to try and track his movements and death date? Thanks, Sally Watson rsdwat@fastinternet.net.au

I came on to answer the question: >And you said she was Cherokee? Can I ask where she got the name Lucy Lillian McGuffin?< For Everyone information: When Native Americans married European/U.S.A. men, they were given CHRISTIAN NAMES, POCAHONTAS WAS BAPTIST with the bible name of REBEKAH before John ROLF married her. When he took her to ENGLAND she was known as LADY REBEKAH . SOURCE: "Old Virginia and her Neighbours" by John Fiske. Also, after the Native Americans were so rudely placed on RESERVATIONS, The Government and CHURCHES took the children away from their parents and placed them in foster homes, church schools, or government-sponsored schools to break them of their "HEATHER WAYS or CUSTOMS. The little ones never knew their families, they were told they were dead or adopted due to parents not wanting them or couldn't raise them. They were passed as MEXICAN, FRENCH, BELGIUM OR ANOTHER NATIONALITY to live in the "PALE-FACE" "WHITE" WORLD. souce: Government Records; BIA. I hope this answers part of your mystery. Hi, Dian; Dear, this doesn't seem a mystery to me. BETTY OR BETSY is a pet name for BERNICE. My great-grandmother, Bernice Elizabeth Crocker, was called BETTY, AUNT BETTY and I have found some referral to her as Betsy, Then I have a great-great-great aunt, BETSY CROCKER, who one genealogist- historian DESCENDENT mistakenly called her BETTY instead of BETSY > My mother Betty Jean Nelson Gaughan was in DesMoines, IO at the time of his death. Here is the mystery; on his death certificate it states the wife's name as Bernice Gaughan< Hope this solves your MYSTERY. Amos Shry was born in KS in Aug of 1900. His mother was Mary Edna Gray and his father was Vinton Ross Shry. When Amos was a baby Mary divorced his father and she took the baby to ND. There she married John Haman. Mary passed away in 1912. John Haman passed away in 1920. Amos then ran from ND and changed his name to Jack Earl Brown. He showed up in IA about 1928, meet Mildred Howard and they got married. They had 4 kids. Jack always told his family that his mother told him to run on her death bed and change his name as his stepfather was so mean. Jack Brown ended up being my father-in-law. I have school records from ND in 1916, and he still was going to school in Sargent county, Verner District#3. His teacher was Verna A Johnson. He is listed on the 1920 census as living with his step father as Amos Shry. We would like to find out why he ran from ND and NEVER got in touch with his family. I do know that he had a bad temper, and maybe he got in trouble. He never told his family anything. My husband would like very much to find out why he did what he did. Hope someone can help us. Thanks for all your time. Karen in MN
