I never heard so many holier-than-thou types. Haven't you got anything better to do than critize others. Flame me if it makes you feel better, but what you ought to do is get a life! Lalah

    1. [GEN-UNSOLVED-MYSTERIES-L] LEE MYSTERY
    2. Barbara Lee
    3. I have a lost family. My husband's father, HARLEY RONALD LEE, was orphaned at 3 years old in either VA or GA. I have a replacement birth certificate that he applied for and received in 1960 which states that he was born in Fitzgerald, Ben Hill, GA. in 1899. I also have his Army enlistment papers from 1916 where he states that he is born in Statesboro, Bullock County, GA. (there are no records to get confirmation for Bullock County). He had one sister, LENA LEE, who stayed with him in foster homes; they ended up with an unknown family in Bullock County, GA. LENA LEE worked for Berry College in Rome, GA. I contacted the college and they have no information on her. She just disappeared in about 1943. The family states that she developed cancer and passed away but they do not know when or where. He also had two older brothers from whom he was separated. One, FRANK LEE, he never knew; the other RENO LEE is said to have had a dry cleaning plant in Charleston, SC. I have no dates for any of the other children. HARLEY's birth certificate states that his parents were JESSE LEE from KY and ALICE MINIX from VA. He always told the family that his parents died somewhere in VA. HARLEY also said that his older sister LENA, told him that his mother could speak no English. I have contacted a researcher of the MINIX family in the above stated areas and he has no record of an ALICE MINIX who married a JESSE LEE. Any help on this mystery would be greatly appreciated. I cannot continue on this family unless I find some information on ALICE and JESSE LEE. Thank you, Barbara Lee

    1. [GEN-UNSOLVED-MYSTERIES-L] Reward for Solving This Mystery
    2. I have two pictures taken in 1942 of a beautiful woman. She may have been a movie star, as one of the pictures shows her in front of a movie set with palm trees in the background. In watching old movies I 'think' I have seen this woman. On 8-29-42 she gave birth to a baby girl that she named Mary Lassiter. Hospital records show that the mother's name was Virginia Lassiter, but the adoption papers are signed Betty Lassiter. Virginia/Betty was supposed to be 23 years old, residing in Nyack, NY, born in Virginia, and working as a retail secretary. All this info has been checked out to be false. We know who the birthfather was, but he's deceased. Both the doctor and attorney who handled the adoption are also deceased. If anyone is interested in helping us solve the mystery of her true identify, I have two pictures that I can send as email attachments. Judy Lassiter

    1. [GEN-UNSOLVED-MYSTERIES-L] Lost Cousins
    2. Mike & Kelley Engstrom
    3. My unsolved mystery involves my dead aunt Jean's 1st two daughters. She abandoned them in NY with "a babysitter and hitch hiked to Las Vegas". Thier names were Deborah and Theresa Marie Schmidt. (Losts of spelling variations with that surname!) Born between 1948-1951, most likely in New York, but possibly Florida (one aunt has informed me that she may have lived in Florida, as a "strawberry picker", and possibly married the Schmidt person there). They were abandoned between 1952-1955. It's possible that the birth father was notified and retrieved girls. Or most likely put in orphanage. I've looked for birth record of the girls, marriage record of Jean and Schmidt (no first name known), and have listed self on numerous adoption sites. Been at this for over 3 years, just not sure what to try next. I really don't want to give up, they are out there somewhere. BTW, my aunt Jean later remarried and had 2 more daughters, (another) Theresa and Dale Hearn. She left then also, to be raised by thier father Billy Hearn. I'm really close to locating them. (Found their Dad.) When my aunt married a 3rd time, she later "adopted" a daughter who I know as my cousin, and only ever mentioned the 2nd two daughters. Linda didn't know about the first 2 until after her mother's death. I'm sorry this is so long, but to tell an unsolved mystery you need details. Here is a break down: Birth Mother: Jean GRANT, b 4-9-33, NYC, NY Birth Father: ?? SCHMIDT, b ??, ?? Daughter: Deborah Schmidt, b about 1948/49, pos NY (or FL) Daughter: Theresa Marie Schmidt, b about 1950/51 pos NY Mother and Father have unkown status after returning to NY Abandoned by mother in New York between 1952-1955 UNKOWN STATUS OF DEBORAH & THERESA AFTER THAT TIME. If anyone has any suggestions for me, please let me hear them! I've had several private detectives want to help, but just don't have the money. Thanks, Kelley

    1. [GEN-UNSOLVED-MYSTERIES-L] Where's Lorraine JOLLY (JOLLEY)
    2. Helen Lorraine PETERSON was b. June 17, 1920. Her parents were Renold C. PETERSON and Berta Snow MONTGOMERY. She married Carl Francis Mahurin 12/6/1937 and had two children; Ronnie Lee MAHURIN b. 4/6/1938 and Carol Francis MAHURIN b. 8/24/1940. About 1943 she married Robert JOLLY (JOLLEY), they subsequently had three children - Betty, Charles and Beverly. All five of her children were placed in an Orphanage in Sweet Home, Oregon around 1949-50. Renold and Berta PETERSON were given custody of Ronnie and Carol and brought them back to Iowa from Oregon. After that no one heard much from Lorraine. The last known communication was a telephone call overhead by a very young Ronnie in the early 1950's. She called her parents from a shelter of some kind in San Francisco. That was the last communication. About 1960 Renold (my grandfather) said Lorraine was dead. Robert Jolly (Jolley) was a laborer/hustler/alcoholic. He was very abusive of Lorraine and the children. He was the reason the children were placed in the Orphan's home. The three young children were placed for adoption. Betty and Charlie were adopted by a wonderful family. They haven't found their sister Beverly JOLLY yet but are looking. In their searching they found that Robert Jolly had served time in prison in California or Oregon - an extended time. He has since died. Family members believe he harmed and maybe killed Lorraine. Together they lived kind of a nomadic life up and down the West coast. We would all like to know what became of Helen LORRAINE JOLLY (JOLLEY). She has one brother still alive - my father and her sister in Chicago. She would be 78 now - still the baby in the family. I wouldn't know where to begin to look. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you. Marilyn Collins

    1. [GEN-UNSOLVED-MYSTERIES-L] lost ship
    2. Margaret Black Tatum
    3. I need help or at least a point in the right direction for research into the following story: My great great grandfather Capt. William Francis Black was a sea captain who lived and worked out of Savannah, Georgia. In August 5, 1879 he set sail out of the port of Baltimore on the schooner White Wing with over $2000 in cash to purchase fruitin the Honduras. His ship stopped at Cat Island in the west Indies which awas the last time it was seen. A navy vessel--the U.S.S. Kearsarge--was sent after the White Wing by the ship's owner J.B. Reedy of Savannah, Georgia. But the search was called off when nothing was found by March 19, 1880. I have copies of the KearSarge's ship's log for the period of the search, but nothing is reported in the day to day activities of the log. Over and over again, the reports say the disappearance of the White Wing and its crew was mysterious as Black was an experienced captain. Is there a list or record of ships lost in the Carribbean? I'd be grateful for any advice. M. Tatum

    3. I have a dilly- if anyone can help I would much appreciate. Family legend says that grandpa Paul VRABEL was buried next to his mother in law Julia Posipanki on the request of his estranged wife. When I requested a list of who is buried in the family plot I got a list which shows two aunts, an uncle, g-pa Paul and- an unknown cremation next to him, and a "Julia Posipanik- dates from 1906-1961" now the unknown COULD be g-grandma, whose name was Julia but whose dates could not POSSIBLY go to 1961, the dates could be wrong, , and she could be buried as "Julia ". There was also a sister named "Julia" and she might have lived to 1961 but she certainly wasn't born in 1906. SO the question is- is g-g-ma Julia buried w/o a headstone next to g-pa Paul as family legend has it, or is she buried in the same plot with wrong dates? Is the Julia Posipanik really g-ma's sister with wrong dates? just who is it buried next to g-pa? The cemetery says they have no idea who is buried there. no records exist, they say.

    3. Hi Pat! Have you tried getting an obituary for this person? That might give you some answers to your questions and more. As far as the Funeral Home, try contacting the courthouse and ask them who owned the place prior to it going out of business. If you're lucky, this person is still alive AND may have the records stored somewhere. The current funeral home in that area may also have taken over care of those records you are in need of. You can also check with the local churches that rendered the religious services for the commital. They may have a copy of records that you can get that will give you the same information that you could not find at the cemetery. Good luck PAT! 3. Good afternoon, group! I've stumbled upon another mystery that has me stumped. Recently, I received information from Rock Creek Cemetery, in Washington, D.C., regarding another ancestor who passed away on July 22, 1963. According to the cemetery records, her place of birth, place of death, cause of death and residence at time of death are all blank. The undertaker was listed as: Tyson-Wheeler Funeral Home. However, when I attempted to contact Tyson-Wheeler to request a check of their records, I learned that the funeral home went out of business ten years ago. Now the question is: When a funeral home goes out of business, what happens to their records? How can I find out what happened to this ancestor? Any clues? Suggestions? Help! Thanks! Pat McCoy

No one knows when/how he left Toronto Ohio or where he went except vague rumors that he "went West". My dad swore there was a town called "Vrabel's Stop" which was where Uncle Istvan settled down somewhere in New Mexico or Montana, he thought. Anyone who knows of such a place such a person please contact us. Also, I have gotten email from some VRABELS in Texas- so it's possible he went there.

We don't know what became of my grandfather Leslie R. Wehrle b. 1/12/1886 in Lexington Ky. Married my grandmother Bessie Robinson 6/30/1911 in Des Moines, Polk Co, Iowa. They had six children, four born in Montana. He was a railroad man - telegrapher/station agent. He had a mother and father John and Mary Catherine Wehrle in Lexington, Ky. have found their graves and those of his grandparents. I have two Wehrle Bibles that were from his mother to my grandmother. Leslie abandon his family in 1920 in Florida we presume. Bessie and five children made it back to Lexington and his mothers. From there to Albia, Marion Co, Iowa where she had their 6th child. From then on she is listed as a widow. Papers were filed in Marion Co about 1925 for county widow's benefits. My mother says a man came to the door and told her mother that Leslie had committed suicide by hanging in Hilt CA. (no records found). Last summer we located a copy of my grandmothers marriage license/certificate - an actual copy from the county book. This listed the groom as Orville May, age 26, telegrapher, residence in Sappington, MT. married Bessie Robinson age 22, from Melrose, Iowa. Married on June 30, 1911. We had haphazardly searched for Orville since last summer. My mother said "my brother always said our father was a bigamist". Two weeks ago 7/98 I received a copy of a Certificate of birth - from Deere Lodge Mt listing: male child born to Bessie Robinson and O.R. May 2/18/1915. This was the third of 4 children born in Montana. I sent for birth records but to no avail. Grandma had gotten delayed birth certificates for all of her children in the 1930 - on which she could list whomever for the father. My request from the county level said no births were under the names given both May and Wehrle. The researcher in Montana who sent the birth certificate indicated that the family lived in Race Track, Mt. about 20 miles from Deere Lodge. She also indicated that if this person had wanted to "hide out" for any reason this was certainly the place to do it is a very small community of a about 30 families. Other than that nothing else was found of Leslie Wehrle or Orville May in Montana. We have absolutely no proof Leslie existed. He has always eluded census taking. He last was registered with the RR Union in 1903 - having let his membership lapse (Leslie WORLEY). An Orville May b. 3-2-1886, took railroad retirement, died in 1975 in Santa Cruz Ca. We have an obituary - family doesn't match but his life appeared to begin in the early 20's - ie. 50 member of Knights of Columbus, etc. (The Wehrle's were Catholic). I have sent for his railroad records. It has become an obscession almost to find my grandfather. My grandmother was such a lady, a school teacher/seamstress who raised her children alone and went to her grave with so many secrets. We would like to put everything to rest. We would just like to know what happened to Leslie Ray Wehrle. Thank you for taking the time to read this. Any help or direction would be appreciated. Marilyn Collins --part0_903046929_boundary--

    2. Nicole
    3. Hi Everyone, I want to, first, apologize to everyone for being gone so long. I, unexpectedly, went into the hospital a few weeks ago. I couldn't get anyone to help me out with my lists. I have over 2500 email messages to go through now that I'm back. I will get to everyone just as soon as I can, but there is much confusion on my poor computer right now. I would like to take care of all the people trying to get unsubscribed first. If you are having trouble getting unsubscribed, please email me with the subject line reading ATTN!! UNSUBSCRIBE. As I said, I have plenty of email to read so if you don't need to be unsubscribed please wait to email me when I get things back in order. Again, I apologize for any problems my absence may have caused. Smiles, Nicole dwburgess@worldnet.att.net

    1. [GEN-UNSOLVED-MYSTERIES-L] Charged with Murder???
    2. Leilani Spring
    3. I have an unresolved rumor that has been passed around in my family for many years concerning my grandfather, Francisco Gomes. The story goes that during his life in Hawaii (on the island of Hawaii), he was involved in a fight with several men during which one of them was killed. Grandfather was arrested, but later released. I do not know if he was charged with murder, or what. Grandfather arrived in Hawaii in 1884. His wife arrived in 1887. They remained there until ca. 1912/1913. If anyone has any ideas of where I can look to locate information on the above, it would be greatly appreciated. I would love to prove/disprove this rumor.
