Good afternoon, group. May I slip in a word of advice based on experience? In my own research, I have discovered about five or six ancestors who died in Saint Elizabeth's Psychiatric Hospital in Washington, D.C. I'm also trying to get information on their confinement(s) and death(s). Be prepared for the hospital to give you a hard time and making you jump through hoops before they become willing to tell you anything. That is what I'm still dealing with right now. My question: Who were Esther Wallace and John Pryor Wallace's parents? Does anyone know who were I have not located them on the census or on any land records. My GGGrandmother was Esther (Easter?) Ann Wallace who married Tom Price Phillips. She is John Pryor Wallace's sister. I am also related to this family through my Ledbetter cousins. My Grandmother's neice (MILNER) married Floy Ledbetter's son. Please E-mail me if you recognize any names and have any clues. This is copied from the book "Reilly Springs Heritage 1850-1977" written by Mrs. Ellie Williams Swindell and Mrs. Vera Harrington. It details the first families to settle in Hopkins Co., TX in the community of Reilly Springs. The J. P. Wallace Family John Pryor WALLACE was born in Jonesburrough, MS in 1850. This little town is just a short distance from where the Battle of Shiloh was fought in the Civil War. In fact, Mr. Wallace remembered the sounds of the battle from his youth. He was married to Jane JAMES of Mississippi in 1876. They soon left the home in Jonesburrough and came to Texas. They settled in Milam County, TX. where others of the Wallace family had settled earlier. Jane Wallace died in 1879 leaving Mr. Wallace with two small girls to care for. His sister and her family were living in the same area at the time and helped him to take care of them. In 1844 they all moved to Hunt County. Sometime later John Wallace and his two little daughters, Etta and Mary Lavert (Bert) moved to Reilly Springs. He had a couple of sisters, Mrs. J. C. MAY and Mrs. Tom PHILLIPS and many other relatives in this area. His mother's brother James HURLEY had been here since 1857. In 1888 he married Sarah Bamburg PICKETT, a widow with one daughter, who had been living with her sister, Mrs. Nathaniel MOODY. Sarah Bamburg Pickett was born in Coshatta, LA. in 1863. She moved to Hopkins Co., with her husband Mr. W. O. Pickett in 1882. They had three children, two died in infancy. Mr. Pickett died in 1886 in Raines Co. Mr. Wallace engaged in several business ventures after coming to Reilly Springs. At one time he was in partnership with his cousin Allen Hurley and J. T. KNOX in the cotton ginning business. Their gin was located north of the stores. At this time there were two gins in operation in Reilly Springs. The other was south of the stores and was owned by T. J. WALKER.................... .........John and Sarah Wallace had seven children; Claud C., Maud, Opal, Beulah, Odie P., Rozelle, and Zola. Claud C. married Donnie KIDS of Como, TX and they had 3 boys. John Furman, Ray, and Howard. Maud married Henry SWINDELL of Reilly Springs, and six children were born to this union: Wallace, Aeileen, Buford, Cyril, Edythe, and Martha Jewel. Opal married G. Oscar LEE and their children are Monette, Duane and Marcellus. Odie P. married Jessie WILLIAMS and had 8 children: Rebecca, Woodbert, Florence Evelyn, John Thomas, Robert Earl, Kenneth, Sarah Beth and Sandra Jean. Rozelle married Elmer J. KIRKBRIDE of Sulphur Springs and they had three girls: Myra Katherine, Martha Ann and Rosemary. The two other girls of John and Sarah's never married. Buelah died in infancy and Zola died in 1921 at the age of seventeen. Mr. Wallace's two older daughters married men in this area, too. Etta married Hulom HOLLIS and had three children: Janie, Bertha, and Pete. Mary Lavert(Bert) married W. M. LEDBETTER and they had five children: Roy, Marvin, Floy, Tessie Fay and Eugene. Dovie Pickett, daughter of Mrs. Wallace died at the age of three. Valencia R. OK. I'm looking for the my grandfather's brother, William Osborn DAUGHERTY. He was an albino, and tall and nice-looking. One day he told his father and brother he was going "West". He gave them no further information. They never heard from him again. My grandfather, who was an undersheriff in McClain Co., OK, sent out notices to police departments all through the southwest and west. He never got a clue to what happened to his brother. But one day, as he and his father were working in the fields, his father looked up and simply said "Osborn is dead". I've tried looking for him in different places, but with only the generic "West" to go by, it's difficult. If he ever married and had children, I would love to get in touch with them. I have a photograph of him if any one thinks they might have information. William Osborne Daugherty b. 1873 Fannin Co., Texas d. ? Possibly in the early 20s as my grandfather died in 1925. I have come to realize this now as well since trying to get info on my grandfather. For one thing, Ohio destroys hospital records 10 years after a person dies or is discharged. This is a hinderance right there!! However, I found out that the Ohio Historical society has some records but you have to prove you are the direct descendent before they will release the info. I had to send death and birth records and I'm hoping that is sufficient! I posted this when I first came on the list, but will do so again as I have a little more information. Frank Hurdle was my maternal grandfather. He worked for the New York Central Railroad and was hurt on the job. I think this was about 1929 or so. Frank and Kathryn lived in Youngstown, Ohio and had 5 children: Frances, Robert, Thomas, Elizabeth, and Edward. Frank's mother, Lillian lived in Zanesville, Ohio and apparently the family went there while Frank recuperated. My mother (Elizabeth)always told me that Lillian hated my grandmother, Kathryn - why, I'm not sure - religion could have been part of it. Anyway, the story my mother always told me was that Lillian put Frank in a hospital but would not tell which one and he died there, but she would never tell the family where she buried him. I have since found out that he was in the Massilon State Hospital from 1934 to 1936 (not sure what happened between 1930 and 1934) and then transferred to the Dayton State Hospitial from 1936 to 1946. They told me he was "discharged". I don't know to where of if he was let out on his own. I have written back to ask this question. His mother's obituary in 1951 says that she has a surviving son, Frank, but his address is unknown. So, apparently he was alive past 1951. I have had Columbus search the 1950's and 1960's for a dc, but they have not found one. I am now awaiting results on a search of the 1970's and 1980's. That would be unreal! My mother went through her life thinking her father was dead...and now to find he was not. You just never know what you may find!!! kathy
My great grandfather, JOHN JAMES SMITH, also known as J.J.SMITH, born 08/1856 in Amherst was living in Amherst, VA in 6/1900 with his wife Julia Ann Smith and children when the census was taken. According to family rumors he had a nervous breakdown and was committed to the Great Western Psy Center in Staunton, VA where he committed suicide sometime between 6/1900 and the end of 1901. I've been unable to secure a death certificate from vital records in Richmond, VA. Does anyone know anything about this Psy Center in Staunton (I understand it's still there) and how I can secure information about his confinement and death? Chris Rakoci cmrmpr@aol.com
cOME ON GREG. EVERYONE NEEDS A LITTLE HUMOR ONCE IN A WHILE. IT IS BEGINNING TO GET BORING. RAISE THE SHADES AND LET A LITTLE SUNSHINE IN. I DON'T INTEND TO HANG AROUND TOO LONG IF WE CAN'T AT LEAST SHARE A SMILE ONCE IN A WHILE. IF I WANTED NO HUMOR AT ALL THEN I WOULD BE READING THE NEWS SITES, NOT ONE CONNECTED WITH MY HOBBY-GENEALOGY1 OK. I AM SURE SOMEONE OUT THERE IS GOING TO LET ME HAVE IT SO GO RIGHT AHEAD, I CAN TAKE IT. ELNITA IN SOUTH CAROLINA Greg, Lighten up!!! I enjoyed Barbara's "joke"!!! And I believe that I am not the only one. I even forwarded it to many of my friends with whom I have laughed about people just like you that are listed in the "joke". If you have nothing better to do than try to trash Barbara, then you need to get a job. That list had been very inactive, in fact it has been one of the most boring lists I have been on in a while. I just stay in it to see if it improves. Barbara's "joke" was one of the best posts I have seen on there in some time. Just chill and enjoy!!! Suzanne
Good morning Jeff--see you are on here with us unsolved people :-) My unsolved mystery is a elusive lady by the name of Elizabeth Coffey Marler. She was born in 1803 SC (or some say 1809 Tn) She married Solomon Basham in 1826. Her children were born in Tn. My ancestor was Coffey Jones Basham b 1827 Tn. Any help tracking this lady would be very greatly appreciative. Thanks Glitz
My mystery, posted in July, regards Charles Leroy White of Greenwood, NE. He married Mary Theresa KELLY, they had sons William and Charles Leroy, JR., then one day he went off to work and never returned, nor was heard from again. I'm not sure whether they lived in NE or TX at the time. Mary had him declared dead and never remarried. Anyone ever heard of this rascal? Thanks- Jo

Dear List, I recently posted an inquiry concerning my LEE family mystery. It is rather discouraging to impatiently wait for a response and only receive the recently unrelated messages. I am not going to unsubscribe because I am still looking for an answer to my request but it would be nice if some of this anger was channeled into answering legitiment requests with maybe, "Welcome to the list, we don't have an answer to your question but if we run across an answer, we will let you know!". I, also, am very disapppointed in this list. I have seen NOTHING solved. I have seen very little postings. And I have seen behavior in adult people that I can't believe!!! This was just a little joke for Heaven's sake. Maybe it was even a mystery because it started with a question. Maybe you all are just ticked off because you didn't know the answer. Who knows. I know I have seen too much compulsive behavior here to last for awhile. You people who are complaining about that one little joke need to get a life!!!! Is this the way you run your life?? I appreciate humor and I'm sorry you don't!!! Why are you up so tight???!!!! I am unsubscribing---I don't want to be in a list that has people who act so child-like over just a little cyber list. I expect one of you complainers to say next, "I'm gonna tell!" You must not have anything much to do!!!! Suzanne Coats
