In 1926 my uncle Finus Hiatt and his wife Opal Braley had a son and named him after his father. My grandfather Orval Hiatt son realized that neither his son nor his daugther in law were capable of caring for the child and went to court and was awarded custody. Opal and Finus divorced and Opal moved to Arizona. Grandpa decided she and her new husband Richard Nagel would now be fine parents for his grandson. Finus Jr, wanted to go to an expensive college which neither his birth father nor his grandfather could afford. He washed his hands of the Hiatt family and changed his name to Richard Nagel JR. My aunt told me that Finus/Richard joined the military and was a MIA. She just didn't remember what war. He would have turned 18 in 1944. I cannot find him on any of lists of war dead for either the Korean nor the Viet Nam war. What happened to Finus/Richard Nora -- Mailto:Norahiatt@sprintmail.com Andrew Manar Where are YOU??? http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/h/i/a/Nora-Ann-Hiatt-WA/
My grandfather, Frank Blackstone, disappeared from Lexington, Dawson County, Nebraska, in the fall of 1920. He was never heard from or seen again by any family member or acquaintance. My now deceased mother who was agonized by the loss spent many long hours trying to locate her father. During the last year, I have continued the search which has turned up only his signature which reveals that he was Frank H. Blackstone. He was born in Ks. in May of 1880, bought land in Oklahoma in 1902, where he built a barn, outbuildings, and a house before his marriage to my grandmother, Olive M. Chilcott, in Medicine Lodge, Kansas, in 1903. They were the parents of numerous children, all of whom have stated that he was a good father. By 1912, they had left Harper County, Oklahoma where they must have experienced drought conditions to live for a short time in Steamboat Springs, Co. before moving to Dawson County, Nebraska. The marriage relationship was never a happy one, according to my mother and aunts. Frank is listed with his family in the 1920 Census in Dawson County, Nebraska which is the last record that I have been able to locate concerning his life, other than a divorce action brought by my grandmother in 1923 on the grounds of abandonment. >From other records which I have found through my search, it is clearly indicated that he was a very ambitious man during his early years and an exceptional horseman. His wedding picture taken in 1903 shows a very handsome man. I have attempted to locate his death certificate in various states including all of those where he had previously lived as well as Nebraska. There are no records pertaining to his death and nothing appears on the SSI. Any advice or information will be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Carla Rigby
My grandfather, John Daniel Clark, was born (according to my mother) in 1904 in Woods County, Oklahoma. He and my grandmother were married in Kansas City, Mo. they then lived in western Missouri or eastern Arkansas (in or near Joplin, Mo.). My mother was born in Joplin in 1923. They moved to Gallipolis, Ohio (don't know the date). Gallipolis is on the river bordering West Virginia. My grandfather worked in a coal mine in West Virginia. He walked across the train trestle over the river every morning to go to work in the mine and came home the same way. One morning he went to work and was never seen again. My mother was five at the time and her sister was about two. My grandmother was so angry at him for leaving her with two small children that she never would talk about him. She only told me that I "looked like" my grandfather and that he was one-eighth Indian. I have never learned anything about his family. My mother does not know any more than this. We have tried to find out information from searching Oklahoma records in Woods County with no luck and requested a marriage certificate from Kansas City, again with no luck. My grandmother told my mother that she believed he was probably shot by someone to whom he owed money, because he like to gamble. I would really like to find out what happened to him and find out if there could be any family still living. I am also interested in my possible Indian heritage. I cannot find out any of that until I can find out about him.
I am still searching for my grandfather - whatever his name is. To update. Leslie Wehrle is supposed to have married my grandmother, they had six children all with the name Wehrle (courtesy of delayed birth certificates) However when discovering their marriage record on the county level the name of the groom was Orville May. Also their third born child in Montana listed parents as O..R. May and Bessie Robinson. Leslie was a railroad telegrapher from Lexington Ky, he had a human mother and father Mary Catherine Jones and John Wehrle whom my grandmother met and received the family Bible from we know they were real, we found where they are buried. I have the Wehrle Bible. I found an Orville May on SSDI who took Railroad Retirement born in 1886 - same year as Leslie. I had his obituary from Santa Cruz CA. 1975. Nothing seemed to fit, the wife, the family I believe it even listed a sister. However, I ordered his RR retirement papers - In thumbing through it looked hopeless. He was in Iowa, where he could have possibly met my grandmother. In his papers it said he was born in Bedford, Iowa However, later in requesting his retirement - he submitted a delayed birth certificate from Lincoln, Nebraska (the plot thickens). There were years that didn't coincide with where Leslie was supposed to be - looked hopeless. I found Orville May's signature on many of the documents. To my untrained eye, the signatures on his RR retirement records is identical to that on the Polk County, Iowa Marriage Registration record. Therefore, it must be concluded that Orville May married my grandmother Bessie Edith Robinson 6/30/1911. I still believe Orville May and Leslie R. Wehrle are one in the same. For some reason Leslie was compelled to change his name. I have quarried Fayette Co, Ky to see if there is a way to check criminal records. I can't imagine what he could have done that was so bad to have to change his name. My grandmother was in on these deceptions and went to her grave with the secrets. She was a lady, a martyr raising six children alone, she was a school teacher, seamstress - this is what she wanted to be remembered as, however, she created a genealogy nightmare. I haven't the foggiest idea of what direction to go to prove these two people to be one and the same. Can anyone help?? Thanks for the directions some of you have sent me so far, it has helped. Just wanted update you on some info I had regarding my grandfather, Frank HURDLE. As I said earlier he was in Dayton State Hospital until 1946. I received a note from them stating that he had indeed been transferred. This time to Cambridge Hospital in Cambridge, Ohio! Needless to say, I have already written to them regarding this. Another piece of the puzzle....so there is hope!! Kathy
Hi, I'm looking for information regarding a murder that took place (probably) in MO nearly 100 years ago! No easy task, I assure you. JOHN D. (Daniel ?) STONEBURNER, according to family history, went to prison about 1900 or before, for killing someone over "water rights." He was released from prison in time to have another child with his wife HARIETT "Hattie" FREEMAN - STONEBURNER. That child was born in April, 1901. JOHN STONEBURNER was called "DOC" because he was a natural born vet, worked with horses, etc. The Doc & Hattie Stoneburner family lived in Jackson twp. in Douglas County, MO in 1900 (according to the census there). Both Doc and Hattie were allegedly born in ILLINOIS. They moved to Payne Co. OK by 1918...Hattie d. in Payne Co. in 1935 (her death certificate did not list her mother & father)...Doc, reportedly went to IDAHO to work on a ranch and was killed by a horse. Any ideas as to how I would get Doc Stoneburner's prison records? Any ideas how I can find out who his parents & siblings were? Or Hattie's ? E-mail: AkaNOT@aol.com

Hi group! I have another mystery to be solved! Recently, I discovered a Mr. Christian Stegmerten buried in the Waterholter Family Plot in Rock Creek Cemetery. He died in 1897, at the age of 31. According to his death certificate he was married but I have no idea who his wife was nor do I have any idea how he is related to the Waterholters other than being born in Germany. So far I have not been able to find anyone living with the Stegmerten family name. Can anyone help? Thanks! Pat McCoy

Tammy wrote << I know it sounds crazy to want to find data about someone you never knew but I feel an emptiness in my heart that needs to be filled. >> Dear Tammy - My father, who my maternal grandmother detested, died in 1947, just shy of my 3rd birthday. She would not allow his name even to be mentioned in the house or any mention of his family. Everything I've learned about him was from digging into the past. On a just-completed vacation into northern Maine, I finally located the home he was born and brought up in. I wept when I found concrete evidence that he really existed. I think you'll find that "emptiness" is familiar to a lot of us. Barbara
Hi to the list, I have a good mystery that maybe you the list can help solve. I sure hope so because I am at a lose on where to look next. Here goes! I am looking for my father died I thought in St. Johns or Duval Counties, Florida. I never knew my real father so all information I have received from family members. The story I have been able to piece together is this. I have been told that his name is Keith Lamb. This has been given to me from my half-brothers and my adopted parents. He was to have died in 1958. Some say October some say in June. I know it had to be between February and October 1958. He was engaged to a Miss Day ( my mother) . Both Miss Day and Keith Lamb worked at The Cross the Border Truck located on U.S. 1 in St. Johns County. By the picture I have seen of him I believe he was probably in his early 30's when he died. He died in a trailer fire some where in St. Johns, Duval, or Clay Counties in FLorida. This is all I know. I have check for a death certificate and none under this name was found. I check the social security Index and again nothing. It is like he never lived. Since I have a picture and many people have told me bits and pieces about this and all referred to him as Keith Lamb. I know it sounds crazy to want to find data about someone you never knew but I feel and emptiness in my heart that needs to be filled. Thanks for all the help. I pray someone somewhere can help me. I have already said how of felt but I want to add one more thing and then I will shut up (until I post my mystery-which I intend to do next). This sort of reminded me of what happened to me this morning. I have ateenager who I allow to sit in the balcony at church every once ina while with the assurance he will behave and I have the preacher and the choir member who see him and who tell me if he didn't abide by the rules. Well it seems some members of the church, including our youth director, have complained about it saying they need to sit with parent not by themselves and they shoud not be allowed to go to the balcony. That sort of P......ed me off. I, for one, sat in the balcony at the First Baptist when I was a teenager and no one resented it. The preacher agrees with me and says we cannot tell the children where they can and cannot sit in church and that we had better be happy we have them in church., So see, like the joke, we can't tell everybody what to do, so ir something that makes us smile once in at while I think its great. Rather a lightbulb joke (or any) than all that crap that has been on some of the other sites about that Clinton mess in Washington!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!I shall now shut up on this subject, but will join the next round if I have to. ((((Hugs)))) to all of you. EinSC
GIVE IT A REST, GLORIA (GAL)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I believe you have had your say, and it seems that you are about the only one who is disrupting the list. Either shape up or ship out, is my suggestion!! In my opinion, we are doing Nicole Burgess, listowner, a great disservice acting like a bunch of 2 year olds, in her absence from this list. She was kind enough to start this list for all of us, can we not "behave" while she is away? All of this is uncalled for. Do all of you not have a "delete" button on your e-mail? If you agree with GAL, and don't care for the humor, or the truth as it has proved to be, delete the humor, but keep your opinions to yourself. If you agree with Barbara, and appreciate a little humor once in a while, read it, enjoy and thank her privately. In my opinion, after re-reading the rules of this list, Barbara, GAL, and everyone who has responded to either of them, are actually in violation of the rules as set forth by Nicole, and should be "deleted" from the list. Since that would take most of us off this list, I would suggest a private apology to Nicole, by each of us, and get on with the business at hand, our UNSOLVED MYSTERIES. That is if Nicole will agree to forgive us for these childish actions, and let us remain members of her list. If Nicole isn't sick now, she surely will be when she returns to her list and sees all this mess!! So how about it, can we get back to the business at hand? If there are more "flames" sent, I suggest that we just "delete" and ignore. Just because one or two don't mind looking stupid, doesn't mean the rest of us have too. No public response to my letter is necessary. If you have a bone to pick with me, e-mail me privately, please. "Instructive???" Did all of you not recognize yourself in at least one of the instructions? It actually should have been an eye-opener for all of us! And in her (GAL) own words (almost): And Please everyone - don't judge all subscribers by this one!! Now, I'm ready to read some real UNSOLVED MYSTERIES, aren't you? In response to obtaining information from Psychiatric Hospitals I too have had quite a bit of experience. My occupation for several years was a Research Consultant which meant I found missing people - dead or alive - for their friends or families. Several times I have had to deal with Psy Hsp's. Perhaps it's CA but the cases that I have had proved most fruitful. I would ask to speak to the Archivist (by phone)of the institution and explain the circumstances and the records were always copied and sent to me. One time I actually was fortunate enough to find that the hospital had taken a picture of a man (after he died). He had no family listed and was considered a John Doe who was buried in a community plot with others. They gave me the picture for the family along with all records they had on him. This man's death occured in the 1970's. So Pat, Chris, and others who are looking for this type of record. Don't give up. It can and does become positive. :-) GAL
Hi, everyone on the list. I want to apologize for my foul mouth this morning. There is a time and a place to "cuss", and this list was/is not the place. I truely am sorry. I will certainly watch it from now on. Thank you for reading. JudyL105@aol.com
