Faith This site was created by the U.S. Army Military History Institute and it is a searchable database of their Special Collections. Using this database you can see if a photograph exists of your Civil War ancestor. There were two records for Melton. Just enter the surname you're searching and the results page will give any photos of any soldier with that surname, along with (if known) his regiment. Next, you can send an e-mail with the photo ID's that you're interested in. The Army will then send you (for free) a photocopy of the picture, along with instructions on ordering a duplicate photo. An 8x10 photo costs $10.00. No more then ten photos will be produced for any one customer per year. http://carlisle-www.army.mil/usamhi/PhotoDB.html ==== KYJOHNSO Mailing List ==== Comments or suggestions pertaining to this list may be sent to the listowner, Ann Lemaster-Applegate annapplegate@maysvilleky.net Visit the Johnson County Historical Society homepage: http://www.rootsweb.com/~kyjchs/johnson.html
Look for your lady in the 1880 Missouri Mortality Schedule. It should show the county and township where she was living, cause of death, etc. where she and her parents were born...since you have a death date, have you looked in the Dade County newspapers for an obituary?. Gayle gayle1@wheatstate.com
My grgrandmother Elizabeth Cantrell Crawley remarried a man named Charles W. Shaw on 12-1-1870 in Dade Co., Mo . After that they disappeared, I can find them no where. Her middle son from first marriage returned to Cedar/Dade Co. in 1880 - 81 and said that MR. Shaw had poisened his mother, which is probably not true but he always hated preachers the rest of his life he said that this Shaw was one. I did managed to find out that Elizabeth's death date was 1-10-1880 in Mo but not where she was or buried, as she was born in 1841 she did die at a young age, I wondered if anyone out there had a Charles W. Shaw who married a Elizabeth Crawley in their line. I also found when digging through cemetery records looking for them that there is a Charles W. Sharw b 1880 - d 1891 buried in Lebeck Cemetery in cedar co., which made me wonder if she could not have died in childbirth, but still there is no record on any census that I can find of them. LDS has record of their marriage but ! nothing else to go on. It remains a mystery in my family. Thanks for any help Linda ldmaples@gte.net

I am going to shift my focus from John J. Cameron and try to find out more about the previously unknown son of John, Frank C. Cameron. Frank was born around 1879 in Wadena County in the town of Aldrich. I have looked for info. about him there, but many of the records from that time were lost due to some misguided politicians deciding to bury them when the new courthouse was built. I do not know whatever happened to Frank. He was never known about by any surviving member of my family. Amos (Fred) was 2-3 years older than Frank. Amos named his 1st son (My Grandfather) Frank Everett Cameron. If there are any other Cameron cousins of mine out there it would be from the descendants of Frank C. Cameron.

Hi, I am new to the list so I thought I would dive right in with my mystery. My Great Grandfather was Addison Tait. I know from census records that he was born @ 1869 in Canada and came to the US in 1870. He gets lost until 1892 when he appears on the NYS census in Allegany County (Friendship) as married to a woman named Maryann. Thereafter he appears on the census up till 1905. In 1906 he re-married, my Great grandmother Grace Benjamin. They had 1 child, Max born in PA. in 1907. OK, here are the mysteries. First, I can't find any record about what happened to the first wife Maryann..no death, divorce etc. Also there were 3 children from that marriage, Charles born 1895, Harry born 1897 and a daughter which the name is unreadable born in 1904. They too are "missing" Also, Grace moved to Rochester NY with Max in the late 1920's. She is listed in the city directory as a widow....but there is no record of Addison's death either! I have even searched the cemeteries in Allegany County. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks, Kim Tait
Microsoft has a nice list of sites for searching for missing persons at <A HREF="http://search.msn.com/results.asp?q=&cfg=SMCBROWSE&rn=1266859&dp=1082066 &v=1">MSN Web Directory</A> Some are free, some charge for the searches; some are for missing children, but looks like a lot of possiblities there when you get to that infamous brick wall in your search! Good luck! Pat
I have been searching for information about my children's grandmother, (birth name) Jennie MORENO, who "disappeared" from Salinas, CA in the mid-1940s. Thanks to the kindness of others, I was able to locate a record of her on the 1920 U.S. Census for Tulare County, CA, and found that she had a brother, Verne MORENO, and a half-sister, Angelina RASO. At the time of her death, her name was Jennie MORENO SERRATO. Her death certificate says she was divorced. From her 1975 obituary printed in the Porterville, CA newspaper, I have the names of her 10 surviving children. I have not yet contacted any of these people, even though I have the addresses for two of her sons. Does anyone have any idea how I might make contact with her surviving offspring? They do not know of the existence of my family line. I do not wish to alienate any of them. How can I delicately address the fact that Jennie MORENO had at least two other children they don't know about. I do not wish to bring up any sort of family scandal, but I really do want to know why she left her two sons behind with their father when she vanished.

Help, I have been trying to find my aunt and the trail has come to a dead end. I need your suggestion's as to where I should go from here. First of all my aunt Lizzie b. 1900 in Tn. , my dad, & 2 other sibling's was placed in a orphanage in Atlanta in 1914. My aunt Lizzie married in 1916 and I found her marriage cert. in Douglas Co. Ga. On the 1920 census she had a son named Lee b. 1917. Between 1920 & 1925 my aunt her husband Reese & son Lee moved to Carroll Co. Ga. The grave was located on her husband Reese and his 2nd wife. Plus there was a tombstone that had "The Three children of Mr. & Mrs Reese Smith near Reese's tombstone. No name's of the children. There was no obit that could be located on Reese or children. Neighbors was loctaed that remembered Reese & Reese's stepmom. According to the neighbors Reese's stepmom said that the children were by Reese & Lizzie and they died from diptheria. This happened between 1920 & 1925, in looking through the newspapers the following was found... In july 1925, an announcement of a divorce of Reese and Lizzie Smith. Here it is - Petition for Divorce Reese Smith vs. Lizzie Smith in Carroll Superior Court, October Term 1925 To the Defendant, Lizzie Smith: The plaintiff, Reese Smith, having filed his petition for divorce, returnable to the October term 1925 of the Court, and it appearing that Lizzie Smith is not a resident of said county, and also that she does not reside within the State, and an order having been made for service on her, Lizzie Smith, by publication, this, therefore, is to notify you, Lizzie Smith, to be and appear at the next term of Carroll Superior Court to be held on the first Monday in October, 1925, then and there to answer this complaint. Witness the Honorable C. E. Keep, Judge of the Superior Court. This July 11, 1925. A. W. Alexander, Clerk Superior Court July 13-29 Aug 5-19 Here's the final decree ..... Reese Smith vs. Lizzie Smith Libel for Divorce, in Carroll Superior Court, Verdict and Decree We, the jury, find that sufficient proofs have been submitted to our consideration to Authorize a total divorce; that is to say, a divorce vinculo matrimonii upon legal principals, between the parties in the case. We fix the rights and disabilities oif the parties as follows; We find that the petitioner may marry again, but find that the defendant shall not marry again. This 4 day of October, 1926 C.B.McClendon, Foreman Whereupon, It is considered, ordered and adjudged as follows; Two concurrent juries in this court, at different terms having found a verdict for the plaintiff, granting a total divorce it is considered, ordered and adjudged by the court that the marriage entered into between the parties hereto be and the same is hereby annulled and dissolved and the said Reese Smith has the right to marry again, and that said Lizzie Smith labor under the disability of not being able to marry again as found by the jury. This, Oct. 4th, 1926 C.E.Roop, Judge, Superior Court C.C. Where do I go from here , It was rumored that my aunt may have went to Alabama. But where she had no family to go to, she would have been 25 years old. Please someone tell me what to do from here, I do not know what day & month my aunt was using as her birthdate only the year. The orphanage did not know any of the children's true birthdate's. In the case of my father his birth month & day was the 1st day he arrived at his foster home. As for the year he was born it was guessed as 1909 by the orphanage, I have it all on record. Is it possible my aunt could still marry someone even though she was denied the right to remarry by the Carroll Co. court. ( but did she ever know this). She had a "very rough life" in and out of foster homes before marrying Reese then losing her children on top of that, did this push my aunt over the edge and she just wandered off. Please tell me what and where to go from here in locating her. Pat

Hi there mystery-listers, My first mystery involves my great-great-grandmother. Her name was Ellen DAVEY, born 8 April 1835 (or DAVY, seen both spellings used), supposedly daughter of George and Sarah DAVEY of Exeter, Devon. She ran away from home in late 1849, aged 14, forging her parents' signatures to become a "bounty immigrant" to New South Wales (Australia) on the ship Petrel, giving her age as 18. On the voyage she met two PEET brothers, Frederick (16) and Richard (18). According to my grandmother she had an affair with Fred on the ship, but on reaching NSW married older brother Richard while still only 14 years old. They had 14 children, of which 10 survived, and they were lucky enough to be living in the gold rush area near Bathurst when it started in 1851, so they made their fortune making and selling gold cradles. It seems Ellen probably had no further contact with her birth family, and probably never told them where she had gone. Our family has long wondered about what made her run away, and who she really was. Ellen's origin is a real mystery. She may even have given false information about her past. I have not so far been able to trace her birth or family in Devon. No family information is given on her marriage or death certificate, but the source of her birth date, birthplace and parents' names is a birthday book or bible from the Richard PEET/Ellen DAVEY household, so I assume it is correct. My grandmother transcribed this and other info from the source in 1966 and sent it off to other PEET descendants ... and it recently came back to me via a cousin I had never heard if! Somehow there seems to be a connection between Ellen DAVEY and the surname EDLESTON (or EDDLESTON). This name was used as a middle name for one of their sons (John Edleston PEET) and again for a grandson (Bernard Eddleston DREW). This name does not appear to have any connection with the PEET family, and I assume it must come from Ellen's family, unless it was the name of a friend of Richard and Ellen. Any ideas anyone? How would I trace the family of an English runaway in 1849? Are there any DAVEYs or EDDLESTONs with family legends of a young female runaway? Any advice at all on how to proceed would be appreciated. I'm impressed that a few mysteries have been solved through the list lately ... now I'm hoping it's Ellen's turn. Ruth
Warren was b. 16 Mar, 1845 in Cape Girardeau Co., MO. we know that he was alive in Denton Co. Texas in 1850, living there with parents and siblings. we know he was alive in Plano, California in 1892 as he shows up in the Great Register (tax records) there. after that, he simply disappears. He is not on either the California death index (starts in 1905) nor the SSDI. he is the last of the missing children of John and Elizabeth Higgins Peyton. I do not know who or if he married, or when or where he died. can anyone help me find him? I am also placing this on the NorCal list Cornelia
The reason that I am having so much trouble with Walter, besides so little info is that I was told that he worked for the carnival. It is possible that Walter Joseph was born during such a trip. The Welch family comes from Paintsville Ky in Johnson Co. It is believed that Rachel may have been from Ohio. I have tried the SS records to no avail. I have sent for Walters record about 3 weeks ago so I should get that one shortly. Walter was known as being highly intelligent. Unfortunately his talents were not put to proper use. I understand that he was the "black sheep" in the family. While I was in Ky in Sept. I was able to find a few family members who seemed to remember that Walter had died but remember nothing about any kin. Walter died between 1980 and 1985. It is looking like 1982 is the best bet. I have 2 walter Welchs' that fit the age and year range and the SS record will verify the proper one as the parents will be listed on it. My mother was born in 1933 and her brothers were older than her by quite a few years. She and all her brothers and sisters are deceased. Except for Walter(the slippery little rascal) I have found all the pertinant data, birth death, spouse, burial, kids. The kids part was easy. Only Mom and Walter had children. Now you can see why I have a problem finding info. I only have to search the whole United States. Kansas inqueries turned up nothing at all. Nothing I can find in Ky, Ohio, or WVa either. Uncle Bill lived in Logan WVa so thought I might find something there. The family for a while lived in Kermit WVa, Stone Coal, WV and small surrounding areas. They were mainly coalminers. Mom moved to Michigan when she was 17. Uncle warren came to Mich after the war and was buried here. He never married. As you can see this is quite a challenge. One I have been working on for a few years already. All your help and tips are greatly appreciated. I have someone in Ky now looking for an obit on Walter to see if I can find any clues. Thank you one and all Semper Fi, Mary
