http://www.usnews.com/usnews/issue/980601/1thef.htm Every one of you should take five minutes to read the above article concerning identity theft, and the possible results. Stolen and ruined credit is only one problem... exposing someone to worse is possible. There are related links to the side of this article. When a parent witholds inforamtion concerning another, you might assume is is only out of spite. Maybe not. As one person pointed out recently, there are people who have been killed and thrown down wells. If someone living is involved, it is not impossible that they are psychopaths, abusive spouses, etc. Private investigators have their place. So do persons who aid in adoption searches. The only person who can determine the validity... AND RISK.. of searching for someone, is the person involved. Yes, we all have the option of searching for our ancestry, but everyone needs to be aware of when there is a possible problem in locating living persons. Once you get far enough back to be concerned with dead relatives, the whole perspective changes. Using the information posted in one message, I could find the social security number for an individual, and put that person at risk. Imagine for one minute, that you might be the victim of computer misuse. Genealogy, by its nature, increases that possibility, IF people do not act responsibly. It frightens me to see the hundreds of people posting gedcoms everywhere they can, and the intensive information they provide about living people. No one needs to know ANYTHING about me/my parentage, etc, in order to share research about someone who died 100 yrs ago. You DO NOT EVEN HAVE TO BE RELATED TO SHARE RESEARCH ABOUT HISTORICAL RECORDS. I might be cautious enough to keep from posting my personal information online... but the minute I send that to someone else, I no longer have any way of knowing where it will wind up or how it will be used or misused. DON'T put information about living persons online. It is not worth the risk. If someone choses to post about themselves, they have that option, but no one has the right to make that decision for someone else. Wendy -- RESEARCH is what you start doing when no one alive remembers, no one has written a book, and no one has posted a gedcom.
I have a friend that I am helping find her father. He left when she was 6 mos old. She is now 39. His name is Gary Franklin Cooper b. Aug.24,1931 in SC. He married Beatrix Tedder June of 1957. Her name is Toria Dawn McMurray(her married name). She was born Nov. 17, 1960. Her father left in May of 1961. Her mother will not tell her anything. I don't understand why because it was her mother that told him to leave. She did find out several things from her mother though. That he was working for a carnival in Myrtle Beach, SC. I found out through research that he worked for the Husted Brothers Carnival. They have since closed down. The last brother died in 1993.I also found his old boss Archie Futrill. Toria talk to him & he remembers her father but doesn't know where he is. Any suggestions. Anita

locateme is a paid membership database that will run first and/or last names with or without a DOB and thru one state or thru all states (will not run just a few states unless you run it more than once) - it gives the listings of everyone that has registered their DOB (usually Voter Reg or DL) over the past several years - it goes up to 1980 and quite a ways backwards - sometime you will get a LOT of stuff to go thru - since it is a paid membership (per year) I will gladly run one thing for any person - if the person if not listed it will give a "no match" - before I did that you should run the name and/or DOB thru the SSDI to be sure the person is not deceased - I only get 3 hits per day but they are already paid for and if I haven't used mine for that day, then I can run others - I can forward you the info (if it is not too much) or I can forward you the link and you can rummage thru the info - also they do not purge their info often but you can get a starting place to look for - if you want this done please send it to me to my private e-mail address delilah licensed PI - Alabama Diamond Detectives At 00:48 1/21/00 EST, you wrote: >Regarding the "locateme" service, what years can you search? Dear Delilah: I read your post on Gen-Unsolved-Mysteries with great interest. For several years, I have tried unsuccessfully to find my twin half brothers, same father/different mothers. I've tried everything I can think of, but hit a major roadblock with Iowa Vital records, became so frustrated, that I put it all in a file drawer for 2 years. If you would be so kind to run the information through your locateme service, I'd be so grateful. My twin half brothers are named: Charles Walter Streever and Carlton Joseph Streever, dob May 21, 1941, in Des Moines, Iowa. Charles was born first at 10:40 a.m., and Carlton was born at 11:00 a.m. Their mother was Ruth Jane Kruzick Swanson, our father was Roy Raymond Streever, Jr. They were born at home and delivered by their maternal grandmother, Eva Norris Swanson. Thanks so very much. Sharon (Streever) Mickey zoom2u2@email.msn.com

They would have to have a license tag number for the vehicle they were in. Also the police would have run a tag check on the vehicle. That would tell you the state and the address at which they lived at the time of their deaths. There also may have been personal effects from the vehicle, like the mother's handbag which might be listed in a vehicle inventory. Info on the drivers license of the person driving can also offer clues. Have you checked the Social Security Death Index for both parents. If either one is listed-that will give you a social security number, which can be checked further for information or clues. If not in the SSDI-you can still send to Social Security and see if they have anything on them. Costs a little more and takes longer. Once I knew where they lived, I would check old directories for the area for that surname and contact anyone with that name today living in the area. Sometimes it really does work. I hope this is some help to you. Best of Luck. Corinne <arbhrs@hotmail.com> ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

My husband's wayward great-grandfather who left his family in California was also found in Oregon working for his brother as a cowboy. There really seemed to be a support system in the old days. People seemed to go where they knew someone who knew the ropes. Diane Friis Teresa Dix wrote: > Just a hint for those of you with a family member who disappeared.
