Margaret, I have a similar story but not so many details. I have been searching the name (Dorsey) that my gggrandfather was supposed to have used before the "unfortunate" incident which caused him to run away from Walhalla, SC to Cumberland County, TN and change his name to Harvey Kelley. I am posting everywhere for Dorsey/Kelley connections. So far only an intriguing web of relationships has emerged. I keep looking at all of my data with the feeling that there is something there just beyond my grasp. Even if I don't find a Dorsey in my family tree, I probably know enough about them to write a book by now. Good luck, Nancy -----Original Message----- From: Margrett McCorkle [mailto:mmccorkle@worldnet.att.net] Sent: Saturday, June 24, 2000 5:11 PM To: GEN-UNSOLVED-MYSTERIES-L@rootsweb.com Subject: "Thanks to all" Thank you all for the kind invite: This is my Mystery: Of course it started with my Genealogy research. In tracing my mother's family line I went back to my g-grandfather Asbury Allison Mann b. 1852 place unknown. he married Susan Deer b. 1860. Married 12-1878 in Saline Twp. AR. They raised 11 children in AR. and all is well on down the line. But nothing beyond him. While talking to an elderly uncle he said he'd tell me a secret but I was not to tell anyone and not to tell my elderly mother as she did not know about it. That the Mann's were not always MANN, that they were once WILLIFORD. The reason for the name being changed was that either Asbury "Berry's" father or grandfather had committed a murder, had ran and escaped the law and changed his name to Mann. The name was John Williford, I went to work and in a little less then a year I found a John Williford b. ca. 1772 around Southampton, VA. I obtained court records dated February 11, 1795 in which the murder is described and Affidavits from three witnesses describe the events. He had fathered an illegitimate child ( sec. rape) and the courts issued a warrant, for his arrest, when the officials came to his home he shot a man by the name of Josiah Worrell, who died three days later of the wound. He made his escape and was last heard about was ninety miles away toward the state of S. Carolina. To my findings he was not ever captured or heard of since. (He could be my lost John Williford ancestor). I have not learned anymore about this person, he was suppose to be a school teacher. was ca. 23 years old at the time. and 5' 10" fair, brown hair and gray/blue eyed. How and where can I find out about this lost person. did he go to Mann relations, Did he go eventually to AR. or just his children and grandchildren. Did he work as a school teacher under a new name? I have looked for Willifords (and the story) I have looked for Josiah Worell (and the story) I have looked for the Woman "Elizabeth "betty" Pope Her br. or father Simon Pope. and the others in the papers, to no result. This would help a great deal if we knew this John Williford was the one that committed the murder in 1795. in Southampton. But if he is not then it is still not known if he was ever caught, or if he became my Mann ancestor. Thank you for the reply , odd to have two John Williford's in the same area at the same time. Is there any other info on this John, like age? The John I wrote about may have did the Murder in Southampton but may not have been from there. So many possibilities. Margrett What type of Vitals do you have on him? Death Certificate, Mariage License, Business License, Etc.???? Do any of these give any Clues as to where he lived, worked after this name change. Also, did you write to the Local Historical Society to see what they might have available. Since they married young in the "old days" it might be that he also had a son with the Given name of John. delilah, How would I get a birth certificate of a person who is alive? I don't know if you heard my story or not yet, I am trying to find my biological father's other children. My father was born and died in Ohio. I have all HIS information but, do not have anything on his children who are quite a bit older than myself. Any ideas? Margrett, I don't know if this will help or not but all Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints have a "family history center". These places are free of charge to use. They have tons of archives. They can order census records for any time period. They do charge $3.00 for the census to be ordered. They have tons of books, microfilms of old newspapers, etc. Hopefully, if you know the time frame you can get a hold of that paper. Hope this helps you! Julie, Here's ther information for getting a copy of the Death Certificate. When i requested certificates i wrote a short note requesting uncertified copies for genealogical purposes. They actually were pretty quick too. Hope this helps. What County do you need an obit from? I live in Springfield(Clark Co.) Ohio and if it is from Clark,Green,Madison, Champaign i should be able to get it for you. If you got this off SSDI, there is a place to check "send for records" or something to that effect, it is a letter to SS to obtain his original application for a SS#, on it will tell his parents, his residence, his age, lots of stuff - think it cost $7.00 - once you got his parents names and you have where he died, send to the State of his birth for a copy of his death cert, it will say where he was born, you can then send for his birth cert (although they may not of had them back then) but there will be an amended one he had to have to get his SS# - if you don't know where to send for his DC, let me know, also if you have the county/city in Ohio, I can give you the name of the funeral home, although it will be on the death cert and you can write them and they will have copies of his obits and probably some other stuff. after the word residense, that number is the zip code of the residence. delilah At 15:58 6/24/00 -0700, you wrote: >Hi, >I recently received the following information and was wondering how to go about getting birth record, death record, obit, etc for this person. Sounds interesting Margrett. The only rules on the welcome message was 'no flaming'. Go for it~!! Let's get this mystery on the table~!! pat :@) Hello, I subscribed to the list and have been waiting for some postings to see what we can and cannot post here but so far haven't see much. I kind of wanted to see what others were saying to fit my mystery into. Is there some ground rules as to the postings? and if so what are they? I have a murder mystery, involving an ancestor. Margrett
Hi Margrett. Just tell us what it is. Usually people write several paragraphs; the postings are longer on this list. Hello, I subscribed to the list and have been waiting for some postings to see what we can and cannot post here but so far haven't see much. I kind of wanted to see what others were saying to fit my mystery into. Is there some ground rules as to the postings? and if so what are they? I have a murder mystery, involving an ancestor. Margrett
