    2. The Tombs was a famous prison right in the Bowery in Manhattan. It hasn't been used as a prison since the 1960s, I believe. In the 70s it was used for instruction classes for pistol permit applicants. Eileen > > > location of the marriage it says Tombs Prison (at least that's what the > > > handwriting looks like). 3. The 'borough' could have been called ''Tombs Prison". Check for names of Borough's in Manhattan. An e-mail to the Historical society will produce the answer. Borough's also were called "tracks' and tracks were named by the people who bought that section of land. Some very strange names were thougth of in those days to call the land they lived on. perhaps the first owner of the Track's last name was "Tombs" and he thougth of it as a prison. Thus Tombs Prison. Also check out the name of prisons in that area then. My experience with seeing marriage license of marriages actually occuring in a prison is they are signed "by the Prison Chaplin -----------" giving his name too. Marriages did occur in prisons in early 1800's . While checking my gg grandfathers 3rd wifes statements to the pension dept. she stated she had been married once before. I found a copy of her that marriage and discovered she had been married before that , so I sent for the next marriage certificate and it was from a prison and she was married in a prison to an inmate. very interesting, and it was signed by the Chaplin of that prison. Hope this helps RLee ----- Original Message ----- From: Kathleen Chappell <kchappell@mail.portup.com> To: <GEN-UNSOLVED-MYSTERIES-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, July 19, 2000 12:51 PM Subject: Re: I think I have a mystery > Not to cast any shadows on your grandparents, but if he were serving time > for something and they wanted to get married for practical reasons, a > jailhouse marriage is not unheard of. 3. Not to cast any shadows on your grandparents, but if he were serving time for something and they wanted to get married for practical reasons, a jailhouse marriage is not unheard of. There have been several in our small county so I imagine Manhattan would be no different. ...Kathleen ----- Original Message ----- From: <YoAHop@aol.com> To: <GEN-UNSOLVED-MYSTERIES-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, July 19, 2000 12:26 PM Subject: I think I have a mystery > Hi Listers, > > I have a copy of my grandparents marriage certificate that has me puzzled. > Hopefully, someone will be able to come up with some ideas as to what course > I should take. 2. Hi Listers, I have a copy of my grandparents marriage certificate that has me puzzled. Hopefully, someone will be able to come up with some ideas as to what course I should take. My grandparents were married in June, 1908 in the borough of Manhattan. On the certificate where it has the location of the marriage it says Tombs Prison (at least that's what the handwriting looks like). I have had it enlarged hoping to make it clearer but it didn't help. Has anyone ever heard of this? Did they allow marriages in Prison in 1908? Is there any way this can be verified? Help!!! 3. Hi Mary, Tuesday, July 18, 2000, 8:20:54 PM, you wrote: ms> Ok , now I am confused, ms> My Aunt Susie works at a hospital and she is in California. ms> My Mom's cousin works at the hospital where my dad died in Iowa. <details snipped> >From one of my UK law reference books, "A person's closest blood relatives are his next of kin... next of kin, in order are: 1. Any children 2. Parents 3. Brothers and sisters 4. Half-brothers and half-sisters 5. Grandparents 6. Aunts and uncles 7. Nephews and neices Married people frequently give the name of their spouse as next of kin, on forms such as those signed on entry to hospital. That has no legal meaning since spouses are not blood relatives and therefore not next of kin. It merely identifies the person who has to be contacted by the hospital should the need arise." This is the position in the UK... I would suspect it's pretty much the same in the USA as well... may be worth quoting back to the hospital and see what they have to say. They shouldn't be asking your Mother unless they possibly have misunderstood and think she hasn't remarried. That's what our medical records dept said. 2. Hi Listers, I haven't seen too many Canadian mysteries but am hoping someone can help me find out what happened to Roderick Lidgate. He was born August 17, 1886 in Saanich, BC (just north of Victoria). He is my birthmother's uncle. He has been missing from the family since 1914. I have searched the WWI sites and haven't found him. He is obviously dead by now but I would like to find out what happened to him and where he is buried. He was the youngest of six children. Any suggestions on where to look? 3. Hello everyone I am new to the list, And hoping I can get some help. Rosa May Darling-Goodwin was born March 9, 1916 In Madison Iowa, She was put up for adoption. And was adopted by George Darling and Christina Darling. They lived in Hastings, Adams Co. Nebraska then moved to Harvard, Nebraska where she went to school and graduated from Harvard High School. The only record they have is the school census that was taken in 1930. And her Graduation picture. She married Maynard Goodwin I can not find a marriage certicate. They lived in Hastings, Nebraska and Republican City, Nebraska going back and forth between the two citys. But were not married in either one of those Co. Maynard was married twice before and both marriages took place in Kansas. I have checked for marriage in some Co. in Kansas but not all. Rosa May gave birth to two Daughters. one in Feb of 1942 and the other in July of 1944. Long about 1955 she seperated from Maynard and left him and daughters. Never to be heard from again. Rosa had a adoped Bother who I have talked to and he said the last time he seen her it was in 1953 .I have talked to the S.S. office and they say they can't help me without a death certificate. I don't have that because I don't know where she died for sure I think Idaho. There are no other living relatives. This is about everything I know. Would appricate any help or suggestions On how to find my mother. Thank you in advance for anything you can do. Kay Goodwin-Sly MO.
