Hi All. I've been lurking for awhile and now want to post my mystery. My Grandfather, Braulio A. Rico appeared in Mills or Freemont County , Iowa in 1928. Where did he come from and where are the children from his previous marriage?. Braulio (known as B.A.) married my grandmother Goldie Spidell in April of 1928. Their first child was born in Aug of 1928. Goldie was 16, although the marriage cert says she was 20. B gives his birthdate as March 26, 1901, making him 27. There was a portrait of his daughter, ("Stella") who appears at least 18, and he had this at the time of his marriage in 1928. Different records for B always use the March 26 birthdate, but span from years of 1871 to 1901 (I have verified that all these records are my Braulio). I think I have found "Stella", Estella Eustolia Rico, who died in Los Angeles in 1988. Her SS app in 1934 says her parents names were Braulio Rico and Felicitas Uranga. Estella was born in 1903. I know there was at least one other child, Manuel, who supposedly died in an unknown place at the age of 19 from Tuberculosis. Rumor has it that there are at least 4 other children from the first marriage. Since LA is so big, I can't come up w/ a death cert for Estella (although I have paid someone to find it and she cashed my check). Since Estella was diovorced, i was able to get her death cert in the name of Rico. It lists the informant as a daughter, Aurora Flores. The city directories for 1988 list no Flores residing at the address provided and I don't have a married name for Estella. I am at a brick wall. On B's marriage cert, he lists his parents names as John Rico and Jessie Aguilar and says he was born in Mexico, on his SS application, he lists his parents as Porfirio Rico and Balleria Aguilar and says he was born in El Paso, Texas. Any suggestions on how I should proceed from here would be greatly appreciated. i started my search for family history because both my daughter and I are affected with Ectodermal Dysplasia, a rare genetic condition. Our sight is affected and my daughter is legally blind. Since this is not a normal manifestation of ED, our eye Doctors are at a loss as far as treatment and prognosis. I thought that if I had more family history, maybe I could establish a pattern. Sorry so long. Shellie

I am looking for a Hattie (could be Harriet) G. STEWART, b. abt 1859-1869. Hattie married Artemus HATCH (b. Oneida, Madison, NY, 1859) in 1882 in Oneida, NY at the home of R.J. STEWART of Oneida (marriage record has been found in the Presbyterian church in Oneida). Artemus and Hattie may have had a daughter, Elizabeth Stewart HATCH, but this is not known for certain. What is known for certain is that Artemus was in Kansas with a woman named Lydia (supposedly SHAW, could this really be Hattie?) by 1886. It appears that Elizabeth (who we are only guessing may have been a daughter of Artemus and Hattie) stayed behind in Oneida, NY. So far we have been unable to ascertain the age or birthdate of Elizabeth Stewart HATCH. We are also interested in finding out if Hattie was still around in Oneida after Artemus disappeared, sometime in 1885 or 1886, or if perhaps Hattie died, and Artemus remarried. Although in the last case, one would have to wonder why Artemus didn't take his daughter with him to Kansas....if she was his daughter. We are looking for parents names of Hattie, and a birthplace and year so we can determine once and for all if Hattie and Lydia are one in the same person or not. Lydia was supposedly born in NJ in Feb 1869 (although I sure can't find her there, or in the 1870 NY or NJ census). If the birthdate for Lydia is correct, I am doubtful that she was the one who married Artemus in 1882, as she would only have been 13 at the time. The wife of Artemus HATCH has been a mystery for so long now. Artemus and the mysterious Lydia are my great grandparents, and NONE of their descendants seem to know who Lydia was, or where she came from or where she went after Artemus died. Thanks for any help! Anne

Martha, Do you live in that area? Reading these took me back, and now I can't sleep, wondering if I knew one or both of these women! Although I live in Minnesota now, I grew up in the Hoke road area during the 60s/70s/80's. And the areas where these two women's bodies were found is not that far apart. While I'm not sure where the second woman's body was found, the mere knowledge that it was in Miami County and about four miles off I-70 tells me that it was probably within 5 miles of the Hoke Road location. The Women sound like they were physically alike in size and age and coloring. It sounds to me like someone had a thing for slender 17-25 year old women with brownish hair, brown eyes, 5'5" -5'6" women. In other words, I can't imagine why police don't think that these are related incidents. Both locations are close to I-70, and just outside the Dayton area. The stretch of I-70 between Englewood Ohio and Richmond Indiana (about 30 miles) is 99.9% farmland, much of it owned and farmed by Mennonite families. It is secluded and scary at night - I grew up out there and I know. We called it "No-Man's Land". A murderer wanting to dispose of a body would find very few witnesses out here at night. And it strikes me that he would have had to know that... Considering that in 1981 I was 24, had brown hair and eyes and am 5'6", I begin to think back to some of the weird guys I ran into while out socializing (in Englewood, Union & West Milton area) on the Weekends and realize how fortunate I am. And these women's families may not realize that the women are dead. So many young women 'disappear' - we leave home and family for so many reasons. Just reading this list for any extent of time makes it clear that being born into a family does not guarantee that we will be loved, cared for or even missed when we are gone. I wish you every amount of luck in identifying these women, Martha! ----------------------- > > Subject: Two Jane Does in Ohio > Date: Sat, 29 Jul 2000 09:03:46 -0400 > From: Martha Hardcastle Guthrie <mothra@erinet.com> > To: GEN-UNSOLVED-MYSTERIES-L@rootsweb.com > > I am still working on trying to identify two female homicide victims who > were found along Ohio highways in 1981 and 1987. Pat I don't know who my grandmother left with, however my mother recalls some family story that she married a man with the last name of Groom. I do know she was married to a Joseph Beckler by 1918. They lived in St. Louis. She had a son and a daughter by Mr. Beckler. All her children are dead. The one cousin who grew up in St. Louis knows less about Grandma than I. Yes my father truly forgave her. We visited back and forth all my life. I never knew this story until after my grandmother had died, and was much to young to know when I was told, that any of this would be important to me later on in life. My father was reunited with his mother after his first wife had also deserted him, but took their young son with her. My father was never to see his son again. I do have a happy ending here. I located my brother and we met for the first time last summer. His mother had taken him across state lines and had him go by the last name of the man she lived with until he was about 16. Well enough of all this. Thanks for listening, I feel better having gotten all this off my chest. The two people who are most likely to have the information that would help me have been given access to contacting me without expense to themselves. One of them has contacted me my e-mail and the ones in Texas, I have written to twice and enclosed SASE on both occasions. Thanks for your suggestion. Well Miriam All I can say is I sure hope you solve all this and my heart is with you. I'll sure keep you in my prayers and thoughts and if I can think of any hint I will sure let you know. I am sure you will come up with an answer, but it took me 2-3 yrs to find my cousin so as it goes Rome was not built in a day. Do not Give Up. Pat
Hi Miriam I can see that we have a whole different picture here. She must of left of her own. But why? Was this man she left with someone she married? How old was she when she married her husband and how old was he? Was it a setup marriage with the parents? Since they did not have safety strapes in High Chairs in those days to tie a child in a high chair was a common thing. I can even remember that being done in my era and it was not considered child abuse or unlawful. The bottom line would be how long he was there and probably no one really knows. I wish she had told you and defended herself and did she really make up with your father? I guess what we are looking at now is what employment did she seek and how many times did she remarry and where did all these events take place. Well, God Bless you I hope you can come up with all this and find some Answers. Do you know if she had other children? They could help with the anwers. Pat
