    3. Hi Bubbles, Early on I queried the Mallow Heritage Center in Ireland and received a copy of Roger's Baptismal certificate. The family immigrated to the US in 1882. Roger had five sisters and a brother. Among them my g-grandmother. I have elderly relatives who still remember Roger. There is not even a slim chance that he was adopted. The census records bear out that fact. Also the pension he applied for in the name of Walter Timbrell was a Civil War pension. Roger was not born until 1877. My uncle was a flim-flam man. I must say though, that is an interesting thought. Thanks for writing. Best wishes, Liz ----- Original Message ----- From: Bubbles <Bubbles@kvenn.freeserve.co.uk> To: <GEN-UNSOLVED-MYSTERIES-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, August 07, 2000 2:59 AM Subject: Re: Roger Cashman- The final word > I know you say final word, but have you considered that Roger Cashman may > have been adopted by your family and that he was born Walter Timbrell? > Bubbles from Robin Hood Country. > ----- Original Message ----- > From: lizngeo <lizngeo@meganet.net> > To: <GEN-UNSOLVED-MYSTERIES-L@rootsweb.com> > Sent: Sunday, August 06, 2000 11:55 PM > Subject: Roger Cashman- The final word > > > : Hello Fellow Listers > > > ==== GEN-UNSOLVED-MYSTERIES Mailing List ==== > Please consider becoming a Rootsweb contributor. > > ============================== > Search ALL of RootsWeb's mailing lists in real time. > RootsWeb's Personalized Mailing Lists: > http://pml.rootsweb.com/ >

    3. Hello Fellow Listers, I have received the pension files for Roger Cashman. He is buried in W. Los Angeles, CA. The VA files gave me an intimate glimpse into the life an Uncle I never knew. The scope and depth of the files was unbeleivable. It is still unclear to me why Roger lost contact witht he family. The only clues I have are noted in a memo regarding an explanation by one of his friends after Rogers death. He claimed that Roger had not written to the family because of his poor eyesight. However, the reason the family was never notified of his death is that most of the information he gave the VA were outright lies. In fact, the VA made numerous attempts to inform the family of his death. There is also the matter of his alias- Walter Timbrell. Among the files, I found letters written by the Timbrell's who had been searching for their ancestor. That is a mess. However, I have written to the Timbrell's and I hope and pray they respond. At this time I have no way of knowing whether or not Roger and Walter were one in the same or whether Roger simply stole info about Walter to collect his pension. This has been a long and winding road and my work is yet to be finished. I will keep you updated on my progress. Thanks to all! (Especially the lister who told me to write for the VA file!) Liz

    1. Re: Still looking for Info, and What's going on ???
    2. I'm sorry, but I need to interject. This guy sounds like a real butt-head. I have been very far behind in my e-mails and am just now catching up. I get about 50 a day so it takes me awhile to find out what is going on. I read with growing interest in your search and in each new discovery. Tell the mother how sorry I am that her son has acted like this--to threaten her and yourself with stalking charges!! Ridiculous! I am sure this is heartbreaking, but if he "has a new family now" and "emphatically doesn't want any contact" the real family then that is his loss. We have had the same problems in my family with my half-siblings (I have four of them and do not speak with three of them). Anyway, my sister went to great and extensive lengths to locate my oldest niece and nephew, whom she found and we had them over to my home for a big reunion--the glad tidings faded within about 10 minutes. Apparently, they took offense at the choice of spouses of my brother and sister. The whole thing was stupid and I called a quick halt to the evening and have had no contact with them in 4 years. It's sad, but for our own sanity we have to pro- tect ourselves. Your mom and you yourself now need to protect yourselves. Do not concern yourselves with his elitist and isolationist attitude. That's his problem. He obviously knows where to find you--leave it up to him. Go on with your lives, know that he is alive, apparently healthly but with a sour attitude. Too bad for him. Sincerely, Dawn Love

If you are speaking in terms of the military, MOS stand for what area they are assigned to, i.e. infantry, mechanics - I think somewhere those are listed on some site or you could call your local recruiter and ask them, it should be public information. delilah At 00:27 8/2/00 -0700, you wrote: >Hey Group > >If a MOS appears in numbers for a marine----what does that mean?? > >Lady Patricia > > >==== GEN-UNSOLVED-MYSTERIES Mailing List ==== >Please consider becoming a Rootsweb contributor. > >============================== >Join the RootsWeb WorldConnect Project: >Linking the world, one GEDCOM at a time. >http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/ > >

    3. Ann - Yes, we certainly share some of the same frustrations. I can't tell you definitively, because I'm only familiar w/prison records in KS, but.... If it's at a _state_ penitentiary, your best place to begin is to contact the State Archives. Different laws apply in different states - so you may or may not be able to get much information that way. If he's at a _Federal_ penitentiary - down in that part of the country, the records would probably be at the National Archives Regional Branch....located somewhere near Atlanta (even if he was in AL at a _federal_ pen, those records, I'm fairly certain, might be at the Atlanta branch of the National Archives. Now, that said, I should follow by saying, depending on when he was incarcerated, those records may or may not be open and available to you. Some states open records after 70 years, some after 100, and some....well, whenever they please, I suppose. Also, yes, prisoners should be enumerated in the federal censuses. It isn't much, but I hope it's a start. If you haven't already, you might take her "Atlanta" or "Alabama" as a lead, and search for him in the 1900 census (as an example) in those states, or elsewhere in the south. Good luck!!! 3. Hello Mystery Busters! I've been lurking for quite a while, but thought I might throw my mystery into the ring. It was brought to mind by the Harvey BOLIN mystery posted. Perhaps it was due to the fact that the two individuals (Harvey BOLIN b: 1874 and King HARVEY b: 1876) were 'of an age'. My unsolved genealogical mystery is King M. Harvey. He was born on May 31, 1876 in Scioto Co. Ohio. I have a photocopy of his birth record from the record book. His mother was Mary F(rancis?) PARKS, although in the record book it is recorded as POTTS. I suspect his maternal grandmother may have been a King. His father left his mother shortly after King's birth. He was the youngest of four children - Wm.Thomas, Elmira, Charles & King M. The father remarried in Kentucky, and had another family. King ran away from home at age 14. A great-aunt said she once saw a photo of him in a prison uniform; she thought it was from the Atlanta Penitentiary around the turn of the century. We have not been able to get a response from them as to old prisoner records. Could it have been Alabama instead of Atlanta? My greataunt was in her 90s when she told me all this. I was wondering if there was any information available on inmates of the Atlanta Penitentiary when it first began at the turn of the century. I wrote to the Penitentiary, but the letter was returned. I called, and they laughed at me. I can't get records from the NARA without his prisoner number. Wasn't the Penitentiary enumerated during the Federal census'? Another line of thought is that he altered his name; possibly to (heaven forbid) Harvey KING (there's sooo many of them!), or even used his middle name (I have no idea what it could be, other than Initial M... and no family on the HARVEY side were M's.) Would appreciate any information or suggestions on were to go from here! -- Kindest Regards, -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Ann Harvey Lahtinen -------------------- www.HarveyGenealogy.com GOONS/ONS#2938 HARVEY-L Administrator

    2. FYI - Lynchburg, TN is the home of Jack Daniels Whiskey - the old 'still' and the little town are now tourist attractions - Fayetteville is a great little town just over the TN line from AL - since these men were working in a wheat field, is it possible they were working for Jack Daniels - maybe looking into the history of the Jack Daniels Distillery might have something about the incident. delilah At 22:17 7/31/00 -0500, you wrote: >(cross-posting to a number of lists, sorry for any duplication) > >This is both an unsolved mystery (disappearance) and a brickwall - both >forward and backwards! Will Bolin (son of Jeremiah) did go to Alabama and work in the Merrimack Mill in Huntsville sometime after 1900, and died there in 1931. His obituary does not mention having a son, Harvey. At this point, I consider the link to Will Bolin (son of Jeremiah) to be speculative, at best. Other rumors said after making his escape to Alabama, Harvey may have gone to Texas, Oklahoma, or elsewhere "out West." Some stories even said that Harvey was killed in a gunfight somewhere out west. Others said he turned himself in. My grandfather seems to recall visiting a prison or some other institution as a child, where he thought his older brother told him that his dad (Harvey) was there. But that could just be a prank of an older brother upon a gullible younger brother. Both sons claim to have seen an obituary sometime in 1930s-1950s time period, which ran in their respective hometown newspapers (Nashville, TN and Fort Smith or Little Rock, Arkansas), announcing the death of a Bolin that they thought must be their father - who was somehow wanting to let them know of his passing. How much is truth, fiction, or just wishful thinking in all of this is impossible to discern. Harvey's life before the murder is almost as difficult to track as it is after the murder. H.L. Bolin married Miss Alma Pierce in January 1895 in Moore County, with W.C. Wagster as witness. (I have no idea who Wagster is, or what, if any relationship, he is - though I have often heard it said that witnesses to weddings were nearly always kin.) Harvey appears, at age 26, on the 1900 Moore County census with his wife, Alma, and two boys, Chester Carl and Dewey Hobson. According to the census, Harvey was born in Nov. 1874. There is a 7 year old Harvey in the household of Pinkney and Elizabeth Bolin in Lincoln County TN in 1880 - close enough to the right age for my Harvey, but no relationships are given. There is a young woman, Fanny Bolin, age 28, who might be his mother, in the same household. But his parents remain a mystery. Complicating matters further, Thomas G. Bolin has a son named Harvey, 19 years old, in his household in the 1900 Limestone County ALA census. I believe that many of the post-murder stories about Harvey, may in fact be about this man, instead. Still other family members claim a P.J. Bolin (son of Pinkney and Elizabeth - or perhaps Pinkney and Elizabeth themselves) had a son, Harvey, b. 1868, but this 1868 Harvey seems to be missing from the 1870-1900 censuses - at least I haven't found him yet. It is this 1868 Harvey who married Nora McDaniel prior to 1900 in Limestone Co. ALA, and then moved to Kosse, Texas. I think some researchers assume that the 7 yr old Harvey in Pinkney & Elizabeth's household in 1880 is this same Harvey - with a woefully wrong age (1868 Harvey would have been 12 yrs old! in 1880!!) - but I think it more likely that he is my 1874 Harvey, who would be closer to the appropriate age. But there's still nothing there to tell us who his parents were. ANYONE out there EVER HEARD OF "MY" HARVEY (b. 1874)?????? He's definitely one of those mysterious ancestors, who just literally disappear. ANY tidbit of information appreciated!!! **PLEASE REPLY TO ME DIRECTLY, in addition to any list where this was posted; I've oversubscribed myself, and will have to be leaving some lists soon.*** Thanks for any help, advice, or INFO!!!!! 3. For Antoinette Russell: I can't give you any information about your missing uncle but I can tell you that the town you mentioned is Palatka, not Plataka. It's on the St. Johns River, about 30 miles inland from the Atlantic coast, between St. Augustine and Daytona Beach. It's important to have the right place when you look for information about someone.

    1. CHISHOLMS
    2. Hi, I am looking for information on my uncle Clarence Chisholm, he was born June 1896 in Gainesville, Florida and he was murdered in Plataka, Florida by a white mob on August 15th, 1926. A kind gentleman sent me a copy of the news article and all the information except if he had any children. I have been searching for information about his family, his wife's name was Ida and they lived on Madison Street in Plataka. Clarence's also had sisters that have been hard to track, one sister named Heneritta Chisholme died March 10th, 1905, Rosa Chisholm Ausley died, Nov. 16th, 1907, Bessie Chisholm Robinson died Nov. 10th, 1909 Corinne or Cora Bullorn Ahserrs died April 19, 1938. Delia Chisholme Brown died 12, 16, 1947 , she didn't have any children but she raised a niece by the name of Gladys, I don't know who her parents were and Mary Chisholm Cherry, she died 2/21/49, she didn't have children. Edward Ned Chisholm died Nov. 22, 1963, had a daughter by the name of Edith and one daughter before he was married by the name of Edna Mae married name Thomas. 3. Shelley, your story sounds similar to ours and our missing grandfather could have been in Iowa at that time - but he was Finnish (we think). Our daughter also has a genetic eye condition (RB). We have found absolutely no trace of the man - we have no clue. good luck, Connie Our grandfather's picture : http://www.crosswinds.net/~plantation/photo1a8.html Connie -----Original Message----- From: Braulioa@aol.com [mailto:Braulioa@aol.com] Sent: Monday, July 31, 2000 11:24 AM To: GEN-UNSOLVED-MYSTERIES-L@rootsweb.com Subject: My Mystery Grandfather Hi All. I've been lurking for awhile and now want to post my mystery. My Grandfather, Braulio A. Rico appeared in Mills or Freemont County , Iowa in 1928. Where did he come from and where are the children from his previous marriage?. Braulio (known as B.A.) married my grandmother Goldie Spidell in April of 1928. Their first child was born in Aug of 1928. Goldie was 16, although the marriage cert says she was 20. B gives his birthdate as March 26, 1901, making him 27. There was a portrait of his daughter, ("Stella") who appears at least 18, and he had this at the time of his marriage in 1928. Different records for B always use the March 26 birthdate, but span from years of 1871 to 1901 (I have verified that all these records are my Braulio). I think I have found "Stella", Estella Eustolia Rico, who died in Los Angeles in 1988. Her SS app in 1934 says her parents names were Braulio Rico and Felicitas Uranga. Estella was born in 1903. I know there was at least one other child, Manuel, who supposedly died in an unknown place at the age of 19 from Tuberculosis. Rumor has it that there are at least 4 other children from the first marriage. Since LA is so big, I can't come up w/ a death cert for Estella (although I have paid someone to find it and she cashed my check). Since Estella was diovorced, i was able to get her death cert in the name of Rico. It lists the informant as a daughter, Aurora Flores. The city directories for 1988 list no Flores residing at the address provided and I don't have a married name for Estella. I am at a brick wall. On B's marriage cert, he lists his parents names as John Rico and Jessie Aguilar and says he was born in Mexico, on his SS application, he lists his parents as Porfirio Rico and Balleria Aguilar and says he was born in El Paso, Texas. Any suggestions on how I should proceed from here would be greatly appreciated. i started my search for family history because both my daughter and I are affected with Ectodermal Dysplasia, a rare genetic condition. Our sight is affected and my daughter is legally blind. Since this is not a normal manifestation of ED, our eye Doctors are at a loss as far as treatment and prognosis. I thought that if I had more family history, maybe I could establish a pattern. Sorry so long.
