Is he/she married to a U.S. citizen?
Hmmm...well, lots of people didn't have to get delayed birth certificates. My husband was in the Navy during the Korean war, and wasn't required to have a birth certificate in order to enlist or to serve. He receives Veterans benefits (and his Social Security benefits), all without having a real or delayed birth certificate. He also didn't need a birth certificate to receive the military honors bestowed on him for his service. I have found many of my ancestors also never had a birth certificate. My grandmother didn't have one, none of her siblings had one, and apparently my mother and one of her siblings also didn't have birth certificates or delayed birth certificates. They all (except my grandmother and her siblings) had Social Security cards, and collected Social Security benefits...yet there are no records of their births. Go figure. Lots of people fell through the cracks, unfortunately. Our local Social Security office told us that we didn't have to have a birth certificate to get a Social Security card even today. They don't care if you are a citizen or not, so it doesn't matter where you were born, and you don't have to be any specific age to apply. People get Social Security cards, Drivers Licenses, and other forms of ID all the time, all without the benefit of birth certificates. In fact, I didn't have to show my birth certificate in order to get my Social Security card...I just sent away for it. I didn't have to show birth certificates to get any of my kids their Social Security cards either. Come to think of it, the ONLY time I remember having to produce my birth certificate for anything was for my Driver's license learners permit...in order to prove I was 15 1/2 at the time (and being that young, a birth certificate was the only form of ID that I had). Since then, I have never needed to show my birth certificate for any reason. If I did, I would be in trouble! Mine is all crumpled and has big chunks missing from it, it is so old! You don't have to show a birth certificate to get married or divorced or to have children. You would probably have to produce a birth certificate in order to get a passport, although I have never had to get one, so don't know that first hand...but I would think one would have to prove citizenship for a passport. Don't know about now, but I didn't have to have a birth certificate in order to attend school, and I didn't have to show my children's birth certificates in order for them to attend school (California, Oregon, and Washington). Times change, and maybe you have to now, but you didn't when I was in school, or when my kids were in school (the 80's). Four of my grandchildren were all born at home, and while I am sure their births were recorded, their parents don't have any of their birth certificates. Two of them are in school in California. You don't have to have a birth certificate in order to function in this society, but it sure makes life easier for those future descendants who decide to go looking for you! :) Anne > You might check the County Clerk's 1940 Birth Index. You might check the County Clerk's 1940 Birth Index. Many people born as early as 1889 had to get a delayed birth record registered in 1940 in order to obtain a SS Card. Also, many men who went into service during WW II had to obtain a delayed birth certificate. ----- Original Message ----- From: Raymond Heyer <BuckyHeyer@webtv.net> To: <GEN-UNSOLVED-MYSTERIES-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, August 24, 2000 4:01 PM Subject: Re: Getting records - Lee Reese --WebTV-Mail-27640-161 Content-Type: Text/Plain; Charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7Bit I have my father's SSapplication, but have been unable to find a birth certificate. It is not true that you would need an ammended birth certificate in order to apply for a SS card back then. My husband has no birth certificate because none was ever issued, not even an ammended one, yet he had no trouble getting a Social Security card when he was old enough to apply. He has had no trouble collecting his benefits after he retired without having a birth certificate, either. Hi Laura, When posting to a list the same general rules apply that apply to newspaper reporting--who, what, when, where. You don't say anything about the mystery, only that there is one. Oh, and a general who, your mother. When, was it in the 1800s, 1940s or last week. Where, this list can be subbed to from anywhere in the world and in fact is. I don't think each member of this list is going to individually ask you for details privately nor do I think you would want all that mail. When your husband puts a query on a genealogy list he must put names, dates and geographic location else I don't think he would get much response. I'm trying to be helpful but we can't help if we don't know the basics. Ruth > Hello my name is Laura and I have a family mystery that is anything, >: but >: > run of the mill. Hi Laura, You may want to try the 1870 Census for Omaha or the 1910 or 1920 census for PA. You can glean a lot of info from her entry, including place of birth. You already have alot of good info to use as a springboard. Good luck! To anyone who is curious about the mystery I posted when I subscribed I am planning to post the whole story with all the details that I can as soon as I check with my family and make sure all my facts are correct. I appreciate everyone who has sent me e-mails with kind words trying to help me out. Thank you. I have to put my 2 cents worth in on this one more time. Laura, I have been on this list for a while now and can tell you that I believe it contains very nice and caring people. No one would do anything to purposely hurt anyone. This is as some have said, a list. People share stories that are hard to tell and very sad with one another and no one is judgemental or nasty. (Unless some one not on the list hurts one of us, and then we stick up for one another, and give comfort.) We all have mysteries or we would not be here. Thieves, murderers, pedophiles, incest, bank robbers, parents that deserted families, politicians, you name it and someone (or lots of someones) on this list has it in their family somewhere. But that is life, and we have to admit and face it and go on. We are all here if you need us. I hope we will be allowed to help. Merry Christmas to all, and to all a goodnight! Portia Haynes
My great grandmother is a mystery. She was from somewhere in eastern europe around the 1850's. The story was that her father was killed in a pogram and her mother decided to get her children to a better place. My great gandmother and her 3 brothers and her mother came over on a sailing ship headed to New York. They were caught in a hurricane and lost at sea for 2 weeks. The privation was too much for her mother who died from it. They ended up in South Carolina (maybe North) Her brothers were older and the authorities sent them on their way (presumably New York) they decided she was too young and put her in a Baptist orphange. The next I know of her she was in Omaha Nebraska after the Civil War. She was working for the Union Pacific RR where she met my great grandfather. They married and went back east. I know she lived in Philadelphia Pa in the early part of the 20th century perhaps up to the 1920's. I have always wanted to know more about her. I would like to know where she came from. Her maiden name was Bertha Caleb. I don't know if that was her real last name or if the authorities Americanized it. She married Henry Kramer. Who was from somewhere in Germany. Gloria
Laura - I have been on the list about 9 months and have seen all kinds of messages posted. Most of the messages I read and delete because they aren't anything I can help with but a few I do send a message in return. PLease be assured that most of the people on here are very caring and considerate. Most of the people live all over the world - literally - Australia, Canada, Great Britian and probably all 50 states. I can't say that I personnaly know any of them or recognized any of their stories and I doubt that they know me. The best part of this list is that you can tap into the expertise of some very good geneologists (some are certified professionals). I have learned things that I would never have found on my own!!! If your situation is a little "ticklish" or embarassing, we understand; however, as one of the earlier writers indicated - no one on the list can help if you don't give at least the bare bones of the problem you want to search. You don't even have to give names initially, if you don't want. Even to list a topic or 2 would be helpful, such as: train wrecks during the civil war or mine worker payroll stolen in Colorado. Those on the list who feel they may be able to help can then contact you direct. We aren't being nosey or judgemental - we just don't have a clue what kind of help you are really seeking. Good Luck. Chris
Hi Laura, I think what people mean (and I don't believe they are being nasty as this is a great list), is that the idea of a list like this is for anyone to post their mystery story on the list. That way all members have an opportunity to help you if they can. If you request that people contact you personally, then it defeats the reason for the list. No one here is or ever has been judgemental, only friendly and helpful. I guess in my view if you don't want to post your story to the list, that is your perogative; however, you may eliminate help from some very knowledgeable persons who have no wish to respond one on one. Dear Laura: (and everyone else) We are all on this list because we have familiy mysteries. Some are capable of being solved; some not. What is generally expected is that if you have a mystery and want help, you will submit to the entire list some degree of detail; else, how will we know if we can help? Most of us are really busy with our own lives and research; we help where we can, but don't have a lot of time to seek out the details and then figure out if we can help. Please try resubmitting your mystery, with enough detail to help us help you. In future, when you subscribe to a list, view it for a few days to see how it runs; they aren't all the same. Then post your query or contribute whatever you can. Hope you have success finding out what happened with your mother. Need any help or info on Marshall Lee Watkins b. 3/13/1884, said to be born in Charlotte or Albermarle County Virginia. Can anyone give me a clue on what to do next. I have checked census records and have only came up with one possible family....a William Lee Watkins and Anne but have been told that his fathers name was Lee but mothers was Lela Unknown. He left home at age 13 or 14 so he wouldn't be listed in the 1880 census and since the 1890 census have been destroyed and he wouldn't be listed in the 1900 because he left home before then I don't know how to establish a family for him. Any ideas. He never mentioned his family or if he had siblings to any of his children. Would appreciate any help or ideas. Thanks!!
