I just joined also. Here is one of my Unsolved Mysteries (part *is* "solved", but just thought I'd share in case anyone had further info). I hope this is not a non-mystery that doesn't qualify for listing on here, but since there were no posts, maybe this will amuse someone! Alice MARTIN, stepmother of Damaris BISHOP (who m. my ancestor, William SUTTON in 1666, Eastham MA), apparently murdered one of her daughters by a previous marriage to a George CLARK, by whom she had two daughters, Martha and Abigail. Alice apparently murdered Martha (b. 1644) on 22 Jul 1648 while Martha was in bed, and then was found wandering around looking for her daughter, didn't remember killing her! I have copies of those court records of her trial at home, if anyone is interested. Alice was the first person to be hung in Plymouth Colony for her crime. Further Alice MARTIN mystery: >From someone on the SUTTON e-mail List, in 1998, I received this: >I have recently been reviewing my notes on Damaris [Bishop}and William Sutton >and I thought that I would post some notes I received some years ago when I >was looking for the parents of Alice MARTIN mother of Damaris BISHOP. Someone >had told me she was probably the daughter of Christopher Martin of the >"Mayflower" but I have never found anything to verify this and these letters >also mention that nothing is known of this connection between Alice and >Christopher Martin. Has anyone found any proof to the contrary? sincerely, >Wendy Schmutz > >"Boston Public Library, 19th Sept 1991, >I have enclosed a photocopy of notes I made over twenty years ago on the Alice >Bishop case and, in addition, a photocopy from Eugene A. Stratton's Plymouth >Colony: Its History and People, 1620-1691 which gives additional information. >These notes include all the court records on the case and a reference to >Richard Bishop in 1649. I know nothing of the parents of Alice [Martin] >[Clark] Bishop. She is of no known relationship to Christopher Martin. signed >Edwin Sanford, Coordinator of Social Sciences" > >"Old Colony Historical Society, Taunton, MA . June 13, 1991 >Please find copies of the court records concerning Alice Bishop's murder >trial. According to all of our standard genealogical sources, Alice Martin's >parentage is unknown. signed, Lisa Compton, Director" > My connection to all this: Damaris BISHOP married my ancestor William SUTTON. Hi myst-listers! I had server probs a couple of weeks ago and some of my mail bounced. I think this must have led to me being thrown off the list because by last weekend I realised I'd had no Unsolved Mysteries for a few weeks ... so I resubscribed. However there still has been no mail from this list since Sunday (Saturday for most of you). Is it just quiet, or am I missing out? I can't wait to find out what the current mysteries are! Hi, We have kin in Tattnall Co GA and WV looking for facts on this Doctor. He disappeared from WV around 1846. A Doctor Martin D. Mooney was on the 1850 Tattnall Co. GA. census. I would really like to know what happened to Amelia Jones Mooney and children left in WV after 1845. Any info would be greatly received and shared. Betty Mooney Smith

Taking a break. See you in a few weeks! Liz
Oh yea... I have, to this point found nothing. Not even a marriage lic. I checked the counties surrounding Fayette...too...but that was when I initially started this project. I guess I could recheck.. Searching for Thomas K. Springer (aka Harry K. Springer). My mother and her sisters remember him visiting in about 1940. He was with his second wife, and two or three children. His four granddaughters are still alive...when I ask them about him, I get four different responses....I keep checking. County by county. I even wrote to the US Steel Co. in Gary, Indiana (Opened about 1908-09, searching for old employment records). A lady there who is also interested in genealogy forwarded the information to the union in Indiana Harbor, Indiana (where my grandmother was born)... I am trying diligently and creatively to solve this.... Adrienne Thanks for the tip, Adrienne -----Original Message----- From: gayle <gayle1@wheatstate.com> To: GEN-UNSOLVED-MYSTERIES-L@rootsweb.com <GEN-UNSOLVED-MYSTERIES-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Tuesday, August 29, 2000 4:42 AM Subject: Re: Leaner Leroy >I assume you have checked the divorce records in the counties where the >girls were born, the counties where both grandfather and grandmothers >parents were residing? > >Have you checked the paternal grandparents probate records to determine if >they mentioned this son who conveniently disappeared? Diana, Thank you so very much!! Deb
I assume you have checked the divorce records in the counties where the girls were born, the counties where both grandfather and grandmothers parents were residing? Have you checked the paternal grandparents probate records to determine if they mentioned this son who conveniently disappeared? I have found that children are sometimes never told what happened to a disappearing father, yet their mother really knew...especially in the time frame you are searching. Good luck in the CA records. g2
Deb, I'm going to my FHC on Wednesday and I'll see if they have this info. If not, I have a friend who live in Merced and I may be able to enlist his help. Diana, San Diego Looking for Roderick Lidgate
Need help trying to find info on Marshall Watkins b. 3/13/1884 in Va. Left home at 13. Doesn't show up in census since that census burned. Any ideas? Thanks, Alicia
Hi, I listed my story a long time ago but will do so again because I just found something that may or not pertain to my GGrandfather. Leander Leroy (Lareau) married my GGrandmother Mary L. Therrien in Manville, RI some time in the 1800's. They moved back to Shrewsbury, MA at some point. Had 3 daughters, Flora (1893), Mae (or Mary unknown when she was born), and Pearl (1898), my Grandmother. Leander and Mary had an argument, Leander left and was never heard from again. No one ever heard from him again from what I understand. I have pictures of my grandmother, her sister's and Mom with Leander's parents at their farm in Shrewsbury. I know that Mary re-married a man with the surname Scott but I don't know when. I'm also not sure if she divorced Leander. I was searching on ancestry.com today and found this: Search Results Search Terms: LEANDER (5), LEROY (164) Database: Merced County, California Deaths, 1852-1999 Combined Matches: 1 Surname Given Name Book # Page Date Range Cameron Leander Leroy 22 186 03/1957-12/1958 It seems odd that the given name shows my GGrandfathers name. Maybe he changed his last name? Does anyone have access to the Merced, CA death records? Thanks, Deb Purcell Glendale, AZ
