Where was the Stratton Colony located, can you tell me something about it?
Welcome to the list!!! Bring on your mysteries, we will be happy to hear about them. I also, enjoyed reading about Alice Martin and always learn something new or find out about new sites where I might do some research.
I found the story of Madoc, the Welsh prince, so interesting that I am finally getting off the fence and have decided to tell you of my own mysterious ancestor, who was also of Welsh descent. About 1863 when Alfred was four years old, his father moved his wife and four children from Davenport, IA to Lyons, Wayne Co., NY, where he parked them with his wife's widowed sister, and then he went to Colorado where he died fourteen years later. When young Alfred was about 17 years old, he "shipped before the mast" and sailed around the Horn to San Francisco, where his father met him. Alfred, known as "A. C.," married in 1886 and his wife gave birth to a little girl two years later in 1888 in Chicago. In 1889, he left the country and went to Rio de Janeiro in order to avoid being called as a witness in a court case. (Family stories say he was paid to go by a cousin also involved in the case.) It is unknown how long he lived there but his wife apparently divorced him during his absence. He was a printer and art editor of various publications before his departure, and the case in question was a fraudulent insurance claim. Nothing more is known of him until he and his wife were re-married about 1899, and the family lived in Ardmore, OK for a while where he was editor of a newspaper. In 1901, they were living in Chicago again. He was obviously having financial difficulties because he referred to his residence as "Poverty Flat" in an elegant poem he wrote, declining an invitation to a social gathering. The exact date is not known but it was apparently not long after that, that he put on his hat one Sunday morning and went out to purchase a newspaper. His family never saw him again---although his daughter grieved for him all the rest of her life. A rumor said that he visited his sister later and asked for his wife and daughter's address, but the sister wouldn't give it to him. This may be entirely false, however. A search of Chicago death records for the period 1901-1905 revealed nothing. I never heard of him having a drinking problem so I am inclined to think that he just deserted his family for financial reasons, and perhaps also partly due to his wife's sharp tongue. I don't know if he may have been a member of a trade association of that time, or if those records would still exist. Other than checking the death records, which was not fruitful, I can't think of anyplace else to search. Any suggestions?
Dear Listers, I have been a mostly silent lurker for many months now, and have enjoyed reading the mysteries posted, and the successes achieved in researching those mysteries. I, too, have been intrigued by the Alice Martin mystery, and I was very surprised to read that first message posted by Susan Snyder/gss4224. In fact, it bothered me so much that today I decided to let her know how I felt about her poor manners. A copy of the message I sent her follows. Keep up the good work, fellow listers, and thanks for being such a great bunch of people!!!! Cheryl Dear Susan, I am a subscriber to the Unsolved Mysteries mailing list. I wanted to let you know that in order to unsubscribe from the list, you must do so at the following address (which is different from the address used to post messages to the list): GEN-UNSOLVED-MYSTERIES-L-request@rootsweb.com. You must write "unsubscribe" as your message, with no other words. I also wanted to let you know that I found your behavior, during your brief membership on the list, to be offensive. As a newcomer to any mailing list, it is your responsibility to decide whether or not the list serves your needs. This is best done by reading the messages posted to the list for a few days. It is not the responsibility of those already on the list to somehow intuitively know what your needs are (when we haven't even been told what information you are looking for) and then somehow fulfill those needs for you. It was inappropriate for you to so rudely criticize listers who were only using the list in the manner it was intended. You stated that "This sight was recommended to me for other purposes than what it is being used for now". Perhaps the person who recommended it to you was not familiar enough with the site to give you accurate information about how it is being used. While I can understand your frustration when the list did not turn out to be helpful to you, that is not the fault of any of the listers, and they should not be criticized just because the list failed to meet your expectations. You also said "I am just going to unsubscribe so that I will no longer receive unwanted and useless email". I do not understand why you felt it necessary to be so unpleasant. The list didn't meet your needs, therefore you simply unsubscribe. Again, it is not the fault of the listers, and there is not any reason to lash out at them. I am sure I speak for many of those on the list when I say that I am actually relieved that your negative attitude will not be present on the list any longer. I believe it is you who are missing out, however. In the few months that I have been a subscriber to the list, I have seen a lot of listers receive valuable advice and information after posting their mysteries. For the most part, the listers all seem to be kind and caring people, who do what they can to help others solve their genealogical mysteries. I wish you luck in your searching. Sincerely, Cheryl Pauling
Hi! Re dates/location of early settlers -- further discussion of this here would be off-topic, but I did want to say to the list that I defer to Mr./Ms. Hinshaw since it's obvious he/she has spent much more time studying this than I. But even the topic of early settlers has its own set of fascinating "unsolved mysteries" such as the story of Madoc (Madog). For anyone interested, one perspective is presented here: http://www.barstow.cc.ca.us/wac/madoc.htm Elaine Dickey/Cumbo/Resseguie dickey.pa@draac.com ====================== - ---------------------------------------------------------- Email Provided By http://www.draac.com/ Free Graphics http://gifs123.tripod.com/
Good morning, This is a short tutorial on what this list is all about. Gen.= Genealogy Unsolved= We haven't solved the question Mysteries=Who, what, where and why The Alice Martin story certainly qualifies as a Gen-Unsolved-Mystery. I am aware that what can be overwhelming mail from a list to some, can be inconsequential to others. I get thousands of e-mails every day, and since I am a busy person, the answer is to delete those I am not interested in. Works just fine for me. That is one reason that the subject is so important, you can decide to read or delete. However, if the process of deleting is also too much trouble, you may want to consider leaving the list until it quiets down again. Now, early on I decided that I would not care if there were misspellings, incorrect grammar, or any of those things on postings. In the long run, what difference does it make? If we can understand what is being said, (typed) that is what counts. I also decided, from the beginning, being critical, rude, or sarcastic never helps anyone, and could actually deter someone from posting, in fear of being criticized themselves. We are here to help each other, and to share opinions, and encourage others to post. I learned years ago you cannot please all of the people all of the time (I raised two daughters and managed to keep my sanity), so if you all wish to discuss Alice Martin, do so, if you have an idea or question about Alice Martin, post it. If you have no interest in Alice Martin, delete that posting. That is the entire idea behind this list, to post a question and to discuss and share ideas. Annie Pa. Okay, I have been tossing this around in my head for awhile but here are more theories as to why Alice may have murdered her daughter: 1) Perhaps Alice's husband was a tyrant and wanted "his" child to be the chosen one. What if he emotionally abused Alice to the point of murder, especially if she was already suffering from hormonal problems? 2) Perhaps Alice was so depressed about her life and the future of her female child that she felt killing her was more humane than forcing her to live a life of submission and cruelty.. Like someone else said, we'll probably never know. I am slightly surprised at the fact that she was hanged for the murder. The loss of female children wasn't exactly a major tragedy in earlier times. Maybe it had to do with the graphic nature of the act itself? Just a thought, Jo-Ann
Hi all, I'm glad Alice Martin is still keeping us intrigued. Let's get our combined brain cells into more mysteries ... the more the merrier! It's exactly what the list is for, as I see it. Those who don't like these discussions need not be on the list, or can simply delete unwanted posts, as so many listers have suggested. Just a couple more comments from me: > >-Alice couldn't have been suffering post-partum depression two years later >over Damaris' birth (or maybe she could? I know nothing of that state) I could be wrong, but I think the latest thinking on past-natal depression is that it results from a hormone imbalance which can actually last up to a few years if untreated. Back then, women suffering from it would probably have had another pregnancy within two years, which would normally turn the hormones around, thus the depressive state disappears. I have heard of instances of temporary psychosis related to this condition. It's interesting Francesca's first post mentioned that Alice was found wandering around afterwards and seemed unaware of the child's death. This seems like a temporary psychosis. I don't suppose we'll ever know for sure "why Alice did it", but this is the answer my imagination wants to use! I'd like to think the "devil that made her do it" was her hormones!! Also, I notice Love Brewster turned out to be a man. However, it's not out of the question Richard Bishop had marriages either before or after his marriage to Alice, or both. Note the posting on the website mentioned said "Richard married Alice Clark on December 5, 1644 [possibly as his second wife]." Alice Martin Clarke Bishop may have been executed in 1648, but this list is making her immortal. Her tragic but intriguing story lives on. Ruth
Relax, The flamer made her choice. Her expectations were different. She has made her choice. This is the first email list I have not regretted. I feel like I found home. Francesca: I didn't read the Alice story. It was my choice however not once did I regret seeing the messages come across my screen. I was flamed once myself because a couple of us on the WV list were sharing information. We, like you, thought that was what the list was for, to share genealogy information and who knows when someone will actually read the note and find they are related and contact you. I want to take this opportunity not to tell you my story but to apologize for the person that critized you. There are many of us out there that understand how you feel and would greatly appreciate you giving us another chance and stay with the list. How could he die on April 25, 1908 when he got married in 1931? Now I'm confused. (Worse than usual.) Please tell me when he did die. Many thanks, Portia
