    1. [GEN-UNSOLVED-MYSTERIES-L] MCLEOD, Kenneth John
    2. Ken Mcleod
    3. I am researching the life of my father's father's father - KENNETH JOHN McLEOD. He was born about 1866 in Stornoway, Scotland and travelled (via Edinburgh) to New Zealand sometime between 1885 and 1892 - more likely about 1885. I have no information about exactly when he arrived in NZ. He could only speak Gaelic at that time. My great-grandfathers occupation was listed as "farmer". He married MARIE DUNCAN KEITH (b. 1864 in Dunedin) on 19th June 1891 at Winton, Southland, NZ. There were three children from this marriage - Kenneth John - my grandfather Ida Patience - lived at Wanganui, NZ William - ships greaser with Union Steam Ship Company NZ My grandfather KENNETH JOHN MCLEOD was born at Halfway Bush, Dunedin, New Zealand on 4th December 1892, and his fathers name, date and place of birth appear on the birth certificate. Sometime about the birth of my grandfather, his father just disappeared. There are no stories or innuendos passed down the family - the consistent story is that he went out on the farm one day and just vanished. My ggf's wife remarried a Mr King - as her name appears thus on the marriage certificate of my grandfather. My grandfather was married on 15th Jan 1924 at Hanover Street Baptist Church in Dunedin, to HAZEL VIOLET BELL. Hazels parents were James Nesbit Bell and Charlotte Burgess. (The Bell family came from Glasgow to Dunedin NZ on the ss Oamaru departing 30th Nov 1874 and arriving 17th Feb 1875). (The Burgess family came from London on the ss Dover Castle departing 30th June 1873 and arriving at port Chalmers NZ on 9th Oct 1873). My grandfather was a marine engineer with the Union Steam Ship Co (NZ) from 1916 to 1934. There was one child from this marriage - my father KENNETH JAMES MCLEOD. It would be greatly appreciated if sks is able to assist with any information about any of these people making up the family group. ===================================== Ken McLeod PO Box 635 Boroko N.C.D. 1. [GEN-UNSOLVED-MYSTERIES-L] What ever happened to Henry Harrison Lindsey?
    2. HENRY HARRISON LINDSEY was born July/20/1862 in Jamestown, Guilford, NC., son of Jacob and Mary Lindsey, and died Unknown. He married FRANCES LOUISE PORTER February/15/1886 in Evansville, In., daughter of ARCHIE PORTER and GERTURDE PORTER. In 1904 or 5, he disappeared from his sister Sarah's home in Peru, IN leaving a wife and 8 children and was never heard from again. There are number of different speculations as to what happened to Henry Harrison Lindsey. Helen Hartwood, daughter of Sarah Lindsey told me the story her mother told her about her Uncle Henry's disappearance. Sarah said that one day Henry walked out of the front door one day stating that he was going to look for work at the local bagging factory. Mother asked him wasn't he going the wrong direction, and he stated he knew exactly where he was going. That was the last time they saw him. Another story was that he went to cash in on the free Cherokee land in Oklahoma, or he went to Bakersfield, Ca. and remarried. (Ester's marriage certificate states that her mother is dead and father is living in Bakersfield, CA.). or he had been killed in a razor fight somewhere His profession was as a barber and of being of foul temperament he had been involved in several razor fights before. In fact these fights caused the family to move on a regular basis. The children were born in towns that were the stops of the Illinois Central railroad. Henry Harrison was so cheap that he had the family travel on circus trains as Indians (the mother Frances Porter Lindsey was Indian and had taught the family how to weave baskets) to avoid paying fares. While doing my own research I came across yet another possibility. Shortly after his disappearance the Hagenbeck-Wallace Circus train was involved in a major train disaster. Many people were killed and most were not identified. In fact there were numerous unidentified black men who were killed. The Showmen of America, paid for the burial of the dead from this crash. They are buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, North Riverside, II. The circus performers are buried between two elephant markers. If anyone knows about Henry Harrison Lindsey also called Harry Lindsey please contact me. Alice F

    1. [GEN-UNSOLVED-MYSTERIES-L] FRANCES PORTER BIRTH AND INDIAN TRIBE?
    2. FRANCES LOUISE PORTER (ARCHIE) was born June/22/1868 in Cario, Alexander, Il., . According to family oral history she was a Blackfoot Indian orphan, adopted by a white family named PORTER. Cairo, IL has no record or either her birth or of the Porters living there. I am not certain that she was a Blackfoot Indian. I think more that likely she was a Cherokee. I say this because of several factors. The Blackfoot Indians are from Montana and they were not moved until the late 1880's. The infamous Trail of Tears the removal of the Cherokee Indians from the Carolina's to the Oklahoma Territory went right through Cairo, IL and there were instances of Indians being sold into slavery during this move. She married HENRY HARRISON LINDSEY (see next unsolved family mystery on Henry Harrison) February/15/1886 in Evansville, In on the marriage certificate it stated that she was that her parents were Archie and Gertrude Porter. I have been unable to find any record of Archie Porter in Evansville, but the 1880 Mortality Schedule lists a Gertrude Porter who died in Evansville, IN. According to family lore, Henry was upset with Frances for not making any claim to lands in Oklahoma. At that time the only land that was being given away was the Cherokee claims in Oklahoma. She died April/05/1911 in Peru, Miami, In.. Does anyone have any information on this family?

    1. [GEN-UNSOLVED-MYSTERIES-L] Maurice Duke from Stotts City, Missouri
    2. My maternal great-grandfather, Maurice Duke, disappeared from Mt. Vernon, MO approximately 65 years ago. He left a wife and 11 children, the youngest of whom had not even been born at the time. He sold cars for a living, and it is assumed that someone followed him and "did away" with him and kept the cash from a car that was sold, but my great-grandmother always thought that he ran out on them. Any clues or ideas would be most appreciated.

    1. [GEN-UNSOLVED-MYSTERIES-L] I don't know if I should tell my story or not. here it goes.
    2. my father was killed the newspapers said, i know what happened but i kinda of wonder who was the person. the story is.... when i nine months old, we was from a very small town, and very poor. our electric and water had been shut off. my mom decided it was best for her to take me and herself to her mom's until things got better. my dad stayed behind. he was a big man, with a innocent type of personality. he trusted everyone and anyone. he had worked at this one company for awhile and everyone teased him very badly since childhood about being on the big side. it affected him badly all his life. well he got married to my mom and he tried to have children with my mom for 8 yrs. finally she got pregnate. but it was in very hard times. he wasn't making good money. and like i said the utilities had been shut off. we went to my grandmother's home and stayed a week. when we returned my father had been killed. ***now this is the mystery... they found my father in a ditch naked dead lying face down in the ditch drowned in his own vomit. if he had his clothes on, we would have asumed he had to much to drink and threw up in the ditch, passed out in it and drowned in it. yuk. but there is some mystery to this story. my father's clothes were off, his keys to his car was gone, his wallet was gone and his car was found on the other side of town. he was found by a garden nursery in a ditch by a field. later the sheriff dept had been questioning people. they found out that he had just gotten paid, he had gone to a tavern and met up with some guys he knew from work. they started betting him that he couldn't drink alot of high ball drinks. the limit was 9 and they say if you drink over 11 it's very dangerous, well he drank 17 is what i heard. i did hear from the people in town - that it was suppose to be a joke that turned bad. I heard that the three men who were with him helped out to the car. the other two men decided to leave when the third man said that he would take care of my dad. that is the last anyone seen of him. the third man that was left with my father was found two days later heading out of town with my fathers car keys and wallet in his pocket with his ssi card and other stuff in it. the car was stashed about a miles away from where he was. they had the man in jail for two days and then the sheriff let him go, no trial , no cases, no investigation, no mentioning in the papers, no redeeming himself, nothing saying that he was wrong or right. my mother was giving 1,000 dollars from the bar she sued. nothing mentioning that. nothing mentioning the fact that his parent were terribly grieved all of their live until each of their death about their sons death. the town that he lived in was grieved. the sheriff came out to the homes of my grandparents and told them to stop asking any more questions. stop going to the papers. stop getting help from the lawyers. and if they didn't stop asking they would lose their land and other trouble could start. so my uncle who lived with them became perinoid and thought his whole after that, that someone was always trying to take his land. their was an FBI investigation, i seen that in his military records. but it was a case that was classified and didn't and wouldn't say anything at all. it just said the case had been closed and classified. so i the daughter couldn't even find out what happened. so about 5 years ago i started trying to get his military records and got them. but in the mean time there was a very mysteriest man that i got in contact with. he was a vfw man and had contacted the vfw people in the state that my father was killed or died. he found out somethings from people and on the computer that no one knew. he told me to call back in a day. i called back in a day, then he said he needed for me to call back in an hour then he could be alone in the office. so i did... he told me things no one would ever believe, i was shocked. i was told xxxxxxxxx i just forgot i am on the world wide computer, no i won't be able to say all because then i might get into trouble. well anyway. the part that i can tell... he knew who the guy was that was involved with my dads death. he said he was released in two days. not because of evidence, but because he was a son of a politician in that area in iowa. and that, that son is now a man who works in the government office in iowa. so that man is maybe in his 60's getting ready to retire. i forgive this man, because i know that bad things can happen sometimes when you don't even mean for them to happen. but i sure would like to know who did it. and why it was so classified? why was the sheriff dept. breathing down my grandparents necks, and why wasn't justised served. well we all know why, i not stupid. now my grandparents just died. but the strange part of this story is ... at 15 yrs old i was put into state care in my state because my mom didn't have the money to support me any longer. and i started searching for my father's family. no one could find any of them. well, i was giving just my fathers name, and ssi no and the town he died in. by this i found many years later...the funeral home, graveyard, church, and the family. the records just had family info on it. so i called the numbers on it, thinking i was stupid because their number had probably changed by now. well, i called that number and i reached my great uncle. he had said my grandmother was still alive in a nursing home with altzhiemers and couldn't remember anything and couldn't talk. well he was right. and they both died within a few months of each other. a few years ago. he told me that the whole situation made him sick, but he wouldn' t tell me much. i told him what this man said. my uncle said that sounded right to him. but no one would tell him why the man was released and not convicted and what the mans name was. i told him why he wasn't convicted but didn't know the mans name. after all these years have gone by - 30 yrs now. I would just like to know the mans name who they found with my dads stuff on him. i am not saying he did it. hint hint. i try not to judge. because i feel if there was wrong doing God will handle it, i don't need to. who knows this man may have already been paying for it for the last 30 yrs of his life. bad dreams, etc. or he could be cold hearted and not care. well that is when my lord will take care of that situation also. i am now facing the same city now. my grandparents didn't even know that i was still alive. they were told that i was in a car accident and that i had died. so when they made out their wills they didn't put me in it of course. they put their only other child in it. their daughter, which passed away two years before they did. they put down in their will if their daughter had died they had no family left to give it to the city he was killed in. WHY in the world would they do that, NO one can figure that one out. unless they were made to do so, who knows. so now i was told by a lawyer who couldn't represent me that i should try for the estate, because i am heir. so i have tried and now the city is fighting me for it. my family was simply farmers their whole life. so was all the generations that came from that state for 150 yrs. my family lived on the same land which is on the iowa and missouri border. now the sad thing is this is been going on for two years now. and the city where he died is fighting against me for it. i am sure they don't even remember what happened to my father. but it isn't fair. i don't have the house, the land, anything. i did manage to get some family history from some neighbors that they had stored for me. i have done genealogy for many years now. i have more on my families surname than most people. i have now got history back to 1725 and just found some more info, so i may have it even further back. but i think i should get it all for me and my children. i was the only child. i am the only grandchild. not the city. but in the meanwhile i have found my oldest son has muscular dystrophy in the last year. so that is a full time job and will be a full time job. well i better go for now. my only wish is two things now. i deserve my family inheirtance and i would like to know the mans name who was involved with my fathers death. ss people tell me what you think....

    1. [GEN-UNSOLVED-MYSTERIES-L] Can someone help me figure this out?
    2. Pat McCoy
    3. Good afternoon to all! I'm posting these questions to both groups that I am subscribed to in the hopes that someone from either one or both groups can give me some insight. I just recently received two birth certificates from the Division of Vital Records in Washington, D.C. One thing that I have noticed is that during the latter part of the 1800's, the names of the parents were listed on the birth certificate, but not the name of the child. The information I have on these two certificates seem to conflict with each other. One birth certificate from November 21, 1886 states that the child born on this date to John A. Hanson and Rachel A. R. McCoy Hanson was the fifth child the mother has given birth to. However, nearly six years later, on March 29, 1892, the child described on that particular birth certificate is said to be the 4th child the mother has given birth to! Confusing?????? Yes!!!!!! Also, since I do not have any children's names on these birth certificates, does anyone have any idea how to match up the birth certificate with an individual? I have one other birth certificate for August 27, 1894 for a boy born to Mr. and Mrs. Hanson. However, by what would have been the child's sixth year of life in the 1900 Census, he is not listed anywhere. How can I track down this child? Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks! 1. [GEN-UNSOLVED-MYSTERIES-L] HARRY JAMES GATHERS
    2. Hi, I'm trying to find information on a Harry James Gathers, all I have heard is that when he was a baby he was either found or given to a Ross Gathers, around or near Sligo Pennsylvania. And I haven't been able to find out any relatives before Harry Gathers. It's kind of like the name was made up or something because their is no other Gathers before him that I can locate on anything. The only other information that I have is that he married a Nannie Sarah Fox b.3/18/1880 m.8/01/1903 and that he died 2/9/1951. So I'm guessing that maybe he was born around the same time as her. Thank You, Michelle [email protected]

    3. I went to the Social Security Death Index lookup and found 7 Harry Gathers. Two of them have SS# issued from Pennsylvania. Birth and death dates don't seem to fit, though. Go to http://www.ancestry.com/ssdi/advanced.htm. You put the name in and it tells you Social Security Death records for everyone by that name with a social security number. SS#'s were issued beginning in 1940 and the records start 1950's? up to 1997. It even has a letter to print off with all the information to get the record. Costs $7.00. You also get a copy of that person's application for a SS# which was filled out by them and lists parents' names and birth places. Apologies if everyone already knew about this lookup. Just thought it might help someone. Karin Heymer [email protected]

    1. [GEN-UNSOLVED-MYSTERIES-L] Hannah Ogden or Hannah Miller in northern Indiana
    2. I desperately need help in trying to locate the gravesite of my grandmother before my Dad passes on. Her name was Hannah (maiden name OGDEN) Miller and she was born in Peoria County, Illinois between 1894-95. She was the daughter of James and Etta (nee Hedges) Ogden. Hannah married my grandfather, William J. Miller on November 14, 1916 at 22 years of age. She resided in Peoria, Illinois at the time of their wedding. Hannah had atleast 3 sisters: Sue, Fern and Mabel. Hannah separated from William and her children and supposedly relocated to the Gary, Indiana area, where she supposedly died sometime between 1923-1930. There is a distinct possibility that she remarried in Indiana, but this is unknown. My Dad thinks he remembers visiting her and going to her funeral when he was a young boy and thinks it was in Gary, Indiana. Hannah may also have had a brother named Lee Ogden. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Kevin Miller

    2. Debbie Bohnsack
    3. Okay, here's my "lost relative story". Samuel NEWELL married Sarah E. KIRKPATRICK and they lived in the area of Bollinger County, MO, in the late 1800's. They had nine children . . . Noah, Susan Jane, Moses, Grover Cleveland, Harley, William, Elbert, Edgar and Balis. Moses was born in 1887 in Bollinger County, MO. The family story goes . . . that during the period of World War 1, Moses NEWELL went down to the local general store, purchased a new overcoat, and left home for parts unknown. The family received one letter he mailed from the train, but that was the last anyone ever heard from or about him. Maybe one of you out there have "found" him. Debbie

    1. Fam Bible: HARDING, SHACKLEFORD, SARVIS
    2. Tony Servies
    3. The following is an extracted copy of the family Bible of Mason and Margaret (SHELTON) HARDING. My understanding is that this copy was made by Gordon E. Lyons of Kansas City, MO. The extracted copy was given to Charles Mallette of Houston, Texas, prior to Mr. Lyon's death in 1974. Mr. Mallette sent a copy of it to me, Tony Servies, of Greenback, TN in 1995. All I have is a typed copy of the original. Since Mr. Lyons evidently extracted this data, I feel that he did not own the original. Due to the wealth of information that this Bible contains, I thought I'd pass it on to other researchers. I do not have a photocopy of the Bible, and in fact have no further information on it. I would like to locate the original version. If you know where it is, please let me know. Notes: The extracted copy is a typewritten document. It is subdivided into five "pages" which identified the original page numbers in the Bible. The data is separated into two columns, which I will designate as Column 1, Column 2 below. The original extractor must have had problems reading all of the data, since there are missing data identified by hyphens (---) and question marks (??). Apparently the Bible was illegible or barely legible. I will faithfully reproduce all of the typewritten information, except portions that are denoted as strikeouts, since these were the typist's errors (as noted in a footnote). I do not have any information on the copyright date of the Bible, so I don't know if it was authentic or a recollection.
