    3. Hello there, I was wondering if you have tried to see if there was a marriage after she left? Maybe she married another man under her maiden name or her married Hobson name. Would have been illegal, but maybe she managed that somehow. Was there a divorce? What about hospitals, sanatoriums? Maybe she left home for a hospital and noone really knew? Next think, what did she write in the letter in 1942 to her brother? Any reference of what she was doing, how she had been or anything? Any clue in it. When she was seen in London, where exactly? On the street, that's a problem, I'm thinking more of she might have been working somewhere there? Did she have any money when she left? Could she have applied somewhere for money like a social grant or something at the time? You could try and see if there is a death entry for a Donald Hobson somewhere, and see if he had children, and try and contact them. I think it's well possible she just dropped her middle name, my grandmother also forgot about hers, and on the death certificate she is a Celia and she was actually a Cicily Mary. However, I would not be surprised if the Hobson you have is not the one you are looking for, because of the age. I find that it's very possible to find similiar entries for names and one is convinced they are the same people and they are actually not. Sorry to say that. I think you have an interesting story here, and there should be a few angles you could try to follow, but because of the war it might be difficult. Have you tried the genealogy list on York? There might be some help there. Maybe you should check the death indexes for Phyllis maiden name, or even her mothers maiden name, she might have changed her name. I do hope you will get some more pieces in this puzzle, but its a sad story. I hope my little input might bring some ideas. Best regards Melanie

    2. Marion T Redstone
    3. I write to you about the disappearance of Phyllis Hobson nee Boardman. She just up and disappeared one night leaving a husband and two little girls. This was just before world war 2 around 1939. He thought she had run away, but not even any of her family heard from her since that day. I dont know if the husband reported the disappearance to the police or not. I dont even know how to go about searching for that record. That mystery was in Uk. I am in Australia so I find it hard trying to help Nancy her daughter out. We came across a Phyllis Hobson who died by suicide but she was married to a different Hobson. this is the information so far. COPY OF DEATH CERTIFICATE GIVEN OVER PHONE NAME: PHYLLIS . HOBSON. YORK - YORK WEST - COUNTY BOROUGH DIED - 1ST AUGUST 1943 AT - 17 NUNTHORPE AVENUE, YORK. We did this because Our Phyllis Hobson was born 1907 and would be : 61 years old in 1968. Nancy had already covered the age pension in UK and no trace. Therefore Our Phyllis did not reach the age of 60 years old under the name of Phyllis Hobson. THURSDAY NIGHT 13TH MARCH 1997 (YORK) Rang & spoke to Coroners assistant gave details of death certificate & requested urgent copy of any information pertaining to this death to be faxed to me if possible. She said couldnt guarantee a fax but would try to mail out information. ****** FACTS SO FAR 1943 DEATH PHYLLIS HOBSON MARSH - HUDDERSFIELD YORK Marsh Huddersfield * (This Phyllis Hobson 46yrs died here) York * (This Phyllis Hobson actually lived here) ****************************************************** Stoke-on-Trent * (Our Phyllis Hobson was Born here in 1907) Handford * (Our Phyllis worked here at 14 for Headmaster live in) Stoney Stratford * ( Our Phyllis left husband Ted Hobson & two daughters here ) London * (Our Phyllis was seen by brother here in 1935???) PROBLEMS WITH PHYLLIS HOBSON FROM YORK.??? A) WHO IS DONALD HOBSON ( IS THIS A LIGITIMATE HUSBAND) B) OUR PHYLLIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN 36 YEARS ON CERTIFICATE (ours was born in 1907 that would have made her 36 yrs in 1943 not 46 yrs in 1943) C) Middle initial M is missing WHAT REGISTERS AS PERHAPS FEASIBLE *** IF THERE WAS A MISTAKE ON DEATH CERTIFICATE ABOUT AGE. This was during the War and mistakes could be made. *** IF DONALD HOBSON DOES NOT REALLY EXIST( for reasons of scandal did not want to give real name or get involved.) *** HER MIDDLE INITIAL MISSING, Noone knew her well enough to know her middle name. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------ *** York is in an area that would not be impossible for her to be in. This would mean she has stayed in familiar territory and stayed in Yorkshire. ***The letter sent to her brother came from somewhere in North Yorkshire (Shields)??? 1941-42. *** Her death in 1943 would explain why noone heard from her again. *** The Suicide and desperate manner in which it was done, could easily be explained and actually fall in line with the fact that she was a very confused and lonely person , shunned by family. Seperated from children. Husband Ted Hobson refused her permission to come home. Her mother died , she may have found out. This time was during the War another reason. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------ NANCY BOARDMAN( HER DAUGHTER) WAS 15 YEARS OLD IN 1943 at the time York Phyllis Hobson died/ disappeared?????????. Phyllis' mother. ANNIE M BOARDMAN ST CATHERINES HOUSE INDEX DEATH: 9TH DECEMBER 1938 PLACE: STOKE-ON-TRENT AGE: 53 YEARS OLD REFERENCE: 6B 185 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- hope this helps I am not much good at this I am afraid , only the desperation of poor Nancy is driving me on. I would appreciate your help p.s. Phyllis was an unstable woman or emotional. She was placed as a maid at the age of 14 and was pregnant illigitimate child I think at 19 years. regards marion

    3. There use to be a site where you could search the social security death indexes on line. You could type in a last name and find information on lots of people after typing in the state too by using this site. It would list all the people of a certain surname who collected social security. It would list their birthdates and death dates too. The only site I can find for this now is one that charges for this search. Does this site still exist or not? If so would someone send me the correct url? thanks, Lynn
