The Patterson family that lived just outside of Madisonville, Tx. in a little community known as Cottonwood woke up one day to find their husband and father gone never to return. There are suggestions that he was murdered for gambling debts and also that he went to fight in whatever war was going on in 1895. My grandmother who was born in 1890 recalls that she was 5 years old when he left. He would have been 42 y/o. He left his wife with several small children at home. She also remembers that her mother told her on her death bed that if "Paddy" ever returned they were tell him that she still loved him. Does anyone have a clue as to what might have happened. Was this kind of thing common in the 1890's? Jamie Gregg Smith
Hello The List, In 1909 a family named Harrison lived in Upper Church Street, Penrhiwceiber, (now Church Street?) Head of house hold was I believe Frederick Harrison. There was I think one son, Harold, and a number of daughters, including Miriam, Margaretta, Louisa Frances, and Harriet possibly one other. They were still there in 1920, does anyone at all know anything about this family, when did they leave the area, when did they leave Church Street, Where did they go? There is a suggestion that one of the girls, possibly the "one other" was involved in a road traffic accident involving a bus or tram, possibly fatal. Louisa Frances Harrison married a William Henry Fleming in 1909 and they had two sons, Cyril, and Maldwyn. born 1909 and 1913 respectively. Does anyone have any knowledge of this family, or has anyone elderly relatives in the area who may remember them. There may have been some sort of scandal, which may give a prompt to memory. Louisa Frances deserted her husband, and took the two boys away. William Henry was possibly a "bad lot"! Elderly retired miners may know of William Henry Fleming, he was a haulier - underground at Deep Dufryn, Penrhiwceiber, or Lady Windsor. He may have been called either John or Yorkie. I realise that I may be opening a can of worms, but I do wish to find out about this family, so if anyone knows anything, or has come across anything, no matter what, I would like to hear. OR If anyone can point me in the direction of any information I would be grateful. John Fleming In South Gloucestershire.
My mother told me that my grandfather, James Philip Hewlett (born in 1875 at Oxford, England) died in 1903. However, I have since learned that he and his brother, Arnold Ernest Hewlett, disappeared at that time. I have some information that suggests that James Philip Hewlett went to Fiji but that has not been confirmed. Any information would be most welcome. Thank you for reading this. Sincerely, Marion Clark. Melbourne, Australia. [email protected]
This is a story told to me by my Mother and I am curious to know if this woman was ever found: In Oct/Nov of 1947, in Carthage (Jasper County), Missouri, a young father came home from work to find his two children abandoned, and his wife disappeared. It was not known whether this was a black market kidnapping situation, postpartum depression disappearance or what, but my Mother said she was very attractive, and had just had another child. The couple was young, my mother was 27 at the time, and felt they were early twenties. The family name was Alexander. Does anyone remember this or remember reading about it and know what ever happened to her or if they ever found her?

Im looking for Francis Acey Gaylord. He would have been might great grandfather. Francis was born on August 4, 1877 in Wyalusing, Pa. He married Catherine Morsch b. July 18, 1875 in White Haven, Pa. Together they had at least two daughters. One of whom was Ella Catherine Gaylord. Francis walked out on his family when Ella was very young. He showed up several years later, after Ella was married, but she slammed the door in his face. Ive often wondered what happened to him, why he left, where he went, if he had any other family, etc. If anyone has any info that would help me, Id appreciate it. Thanks! Thanks to all who offered their help and information. It appears that the Mountain Meadows massacre is the one I was seeking. Now it just falls to me to determine if there is link to my ggg-grandfather. Thanks again to all who offered assistance. Genealogists are great people! Cate

Most families of the time had some religious affiliation; maybe Lutheran or Catholic for a German. Try the churches in the neighbourhood where they lived for information on the wife and child especially. Do you know what happened to him at all after the discovery? Ie. does the trail pick up at a later date? Have you checked the Detroit area cemeteries for burial information? They mostly have very good records. We are German Lutherans from the area and

I think you are referring to the Mountain Meadow Massacre. It wasn't Mormons who where wiped out though. Here is a link that tells the story: http://www.sltrib.com/archive/centennial/cent1231.html The pioneers were from Arkansas and Missouri. It was included in a history of pioneer/Mormans on TV a few months ago. The only thing I particularly remember about it was that one of the names, of the Morman people that were killed were named FANCHER. It stood out in my mind because there are some FANCHERs on my husband's side of the family (Texas FANCHERS). I immediately wondered if there was a relationship. It sounded like it was a very well known incident so you probably won't have trouble finding out about it. My bigamist maternal grandfather was a Stephan/Steffan W. AMRICH/EMRICH born about 1878. He was living in Detroit by 1913 and married about 1914 to my grandmother Emilie SCHULZ, who was born in West Prussia in 1889. She came to Detroit in 1911, her uncle Henrich BUCHHOLZ and his wife Marie were her sponsors. Stephan's occupation on my mother's birth certificate was listed as a watchman (probably a security guard). This man was supposedly caught up in 1915 or 1916. The police records no longer exist. Would he have been deported for that crime if he was not yet a citizen? On the other hand that would leave his 1st wife & child as burdens to the local authorities. Any ideas? -- Nancy M. I think it took place near Nauvoo, IL which is next to Mississippi river across from Missouri in North Western Illinois also close to Iowa,.
I sent this posting to a number of relevant lists, but don't think I sent it to this one yet. If I have, I apologize for the duplication. Here is my mystery. I have been given a genealogy tip from a newly found SLUSHER researcher. She references a MORMON MASSACRE. I don't know for sure whether this refers to members of the religion or a surname (any spelling variant). She remembers reading about this massacre about 10 years ago while in the Washington County Library in Arkansas. (Evidently local people were involved. Victims? Surviviors?) It could have taken place anywhere, but she thought it might have been in either Missouri or Iowa. She knows it was pre 1860, but not the date. The only survivors of the Indian attack were children too young to describe what had happened. My ggg-grandfather was a survivor of just such a massacre. He was too young to even know his birthdate, but he was born about 1848-ish. He was taken in by a family that may have been named CLAYTON. They mistreated him and he ran away. He took a job in a coal mine, married the boss's daughter, and lived the rest of his life in Randolph County IL. We don't know how far he ran. Was it close by or far away from Randolph County? The Missouri/Iowa possible locations for this massacre also could fit. Does anyone has ANY INFORMATION to share or leads I could try to follow on this or a similar situation? Trying to knock a chink in a HUGE STONE WALL., any assistance will be gratefully appreciated. Cate Daniell New Mexico, USA
My father Harold Park Carson born 1917 in Ellensburg and died 8/31/1947 at Deer Lodge, MT. He was a jockey and was killed in a race. There was a name Lightfoot involved. Is there anyone on this list who may have known about him. I would like to know what happened? Sandy P
How would I find out what happened to my grandfather? His name was Thomas Walker "Walker" Tucker b 31 Jan 1899 m 25 Aug 1920 to Susie Brooks SMITH of LaGrange, GA. They had one child.. Thomas Walker TUCKER, Jr 5 July 1922 in LaGrange, Troup Co., GA.. then not too long after that Walker and Susie were divorced, and Walker was rarely heard of again. There is some evidence that he died and is buried in Cincinnati, OH. The mystery is that the family has no idea what he was doing up in Ohio.. Would also like to be able to definitely locate his place of burial. Any ideas greatly appreciated. Lisa Tucker Melvin [email protected]
