My gggrandfather Jacob Caple b. abt. 1816 in Balt. MD supposedly left his family in Monroe Iowa to go back to Balt. and take a ship to round the cape and go to Calif. He was never heard from again. The story says that the family checked for passenger logs and found a Jacob Kaple on a ship leaving Balt. that sank. This would have had to have been after Feb. 1872 where his signature appears on a document. In the 1880 census his wife is listed as a widow. Is there anywhere I could check for sunk ships in that time period?
Thought I'd send out my family mystery. I have a grgruncle who operated a ferry over the Auglaize River in NW Ohio in the late 1840/50s. Family lore has it that he just came up missing one day and the ferry was abandoned. His folks figured he'd just climbed in the back of someone's wagon and set off out west. He was never heard from again. I have it narrowed down to one of two fellows, there were alot of brothers in this family, and am now quite certain it was Abraham Lewis, b.c.1804. The funny thing is, the next generation in my line also had an Abraham (L.) Lewis who took off to dig for gold in NV and was not heard from in many many years. When he returned to the fold, my grgrandfather was so disgusted with him that when he died, Gramps buried him in a potter's field. 'Spose there's an inherited wanderlust? Thanks! Barb
Bob ~~~ Fascinating mystery. I would be happy to keep an eye out for your William Alfred Holt, wife Amy Wood Rives Holt and their children, George Mason Rives, and Dr. and Mrs. Benjamin Franklin Brantley. I have a mystery guest in my direct family line too. I am online easily 16,000 hours per month (no joke) researching several family lineages. Sometimes, when I hit too many brick walls with my lines, I jump into another ancestry, and see what I come up with. Let me know if you happen to find further info, so we are not duplicating efforts. Sincerely, [email protected] Folks just call me Beck
I do hope this site is the appropriate one for this type of mystery. In 1912, my grandfather, William Alfred Holt, left his wife, Amy Wood Rives Holt, and two small children. At the time they were in Jackson Co. Texas near Palacios, Matagorda Co., Texas. Amy then moved in with her father, George Mason Rives who, I believe, lived in Palacios. In the divorce in 1916, she says she was forced to take in sewing to survive. They had all moved from Montgomery, Alabama in 1910 where William Alfred's family had been prominent. He had a sister that kept in touch with the family over the years but apparantly she never knew what happened to him. Family legend says he went into the Army, was wounded in WWI and died in a VA hospital in Phoenix, Arizona about 1927-29. What I know of him is this: they had just moved from Rolling Fork, Mississippi where my father was born in 1909. William had relatives in Galveston, Texas, one of whom was City/County Engineer, the other, a lawyer. His oldest ! sister, of whom nothing is known, was born in New Orleans where their parents were married in 1876. His maternal grandparents, Dr. and Mrs. Benjamin Franklin Brantley, were from Vernon, Jackson Parish Louisiana. What I suspect is this: Somehow, Amy angered Will about something. Family history says she was a Daddy's girl and didn't want to leave her father. Maybe will had found another job and wanted to take his family with him but she wouldn't leave. In any event, she waited four years to divorce him and remarry. I think that means she was partly to blame but she would never tell anyone what happened. Will may have been a Jack London type and wanted to see the world. But he was 32 at the time and had been married six years with two small boys. Why did his sister not know anything about him? Where did he go? This has been a mystery that my father and his brother tried to get their mother to talk about for 50 years and she died with it. Now, they are both dead without ever answering these questions. If someone ever runs across the name, William Alfred Holt (Will), please let me know. I fear he may be totally lost to history. I would like to at least know where he was buried. Did he ! remarry? It's sad to think his two boys would not have cared about why he left if they could have just known him. Marie, The suggestions to follow up on John Mandlin family are great! Also, have you considered he may have murdered the wife and kidnaped the children? I would suggest you follow up on the fellow in the other part of the state, he certainly could have had a daughter named Cora as well. I would follow them on the census, look for the Cora on the census marriage and try to follow her through time. If you could find her heirs they might shed some light on it (even if they don't know your story, they may know that her mother died early). Also by following Mr. Mandlin in that county, and his probate record you might find out something about the other child as well. I would also encourage you to check the Arkansas, Oklahoma and Indian Territory census as it is quite possible that he moved that direction. I guess we know that we must presume he is "innocent" until proven guilty...but since her clothes, etc. weren't taken it certainly sounds as if there could be trouble rather than her taking off on her own. Also, at that time frame there should be some notice of her disappearance in the local newspapers. You can borrow Missouri newspapers on interlibrary loan, and if you haven't had that opportunity it might well be worth the time it would take to do so. Good luck to you! Gayle [email protected]
My great grandfather's oldest sister, Cora Miley, married an older man by the name of John Mandlin in Buffington, Stoddard County, Missouri on 26 November 1893. Sometime before 1912, Cora and her two children (names unknown) disappeared suddenly. Cora was estranged from her husband and was living with my great grandfather in Stoddard County. One day he came home from work and Cora and the children were gone. Lunch dishes were still on the table and Cora's clothing and possessions remained in the house. My great grandfather always believed that John Mandlin had taken the family away and killed them all. He searched for Cora and the children until his death in the 1940's, but was never able to find any trace. They were not on the Missouri census in 1900, 1910, or 1920. The only John Mandlin in Missouri I have been able to find was in another part of the state, had a wife by a different name and a "daughter" named Cora who was much older than the two younger children enumerated with him. Can anyone help? ~Marie [email protected]
Marie, I would try looking for John in ALL other states in 1920. Perhaps you will find him by himself or with just the children. Have you tried looking for John's parents or siblings. There might be a clue there. AJ
Thanks to everyone who gave me the unsubscribing instructions (use [email protected] with unsubscribe in the body) -- I swear I tried that before, but I'll try again. See you again someday, and good luck to all!
Teresa If they daughter was at the funeral, someone had to notify her of the death or she had to be close enough to be aware of it. You didn't give us the time frame of the funeral she attended. But it might be if she carried his last name, you could check marriage records in the area where he lived to see if she had married there. Have you asked the aunt and uncle who got the belongings, or their descendants if they have the guest book everyone signed at the funeral? That would give you a name. Did your grandfather die after the grandmother? If so, and there was any property to be probated the daughter should have been included as an heir. Gayle [email protected]

I asked God to take away my pride. God said "No". It is not for me to take away, but for you to give up. I asked God to make my Handicapped child whole. God said "No" . Her spirit is whole, her body is only temporary. I asked God to grant me patience. God said "No". patience is a by-product of tribulations;it isn't granted,it is earned. I asked God to give me Happiness. God said "No".I give you blessings. happiness is up to you. I asked God to spare me pain. God said "No". Suffering draws you apart from worldly cares and brings you closer to me. I asked God to make my spirit grow. God said "No". You must grow on your own,but I will prune you to make you fruitful. I asked for all things that I might enjoy life. God said "No". I will give you life so that you may enjoy all things. I asked God to help me love others as much as He loves me. God said "Ahhhh, finally you have the idea

Are there any Wukelich's out there? My Grandfather came From Croatia and was naturalized in 1922. When my grandmother was buried there was a woman at grandma's funeral and when asked who she was, was told that that was grandpa's daughter. This was the first time that another child was talked about and then it was just that was your sister. Grandpa's name was Michael Wukelich, born April 3, 1886 somewhere in Croatia. I've been told that he came over by working his way on a tramp steamer from Spain. This was sometime around W.W.I. I have no idea where he came in at or what the name of the steamer was. When my grandparents died I was not informed so had no say so in what was to be taken from the apartment. Everything was left behind by my mother and uncle. If anyone has any information that may go with this please answer Thank you Theresa Coker Porier
My greatgrandfather was killed around 1880 in Lovelady, Texas. I've never been able to find out the details. His name was George Whitfield Monzingo. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. Yvonne [email protected]
What I cannot understand is that I hardly ever receive any email via this list and yet now I'm getting 4 or 5 a day about porn problems. >From what I have read its only aol subscribers with a problem. -MYSTERIES] unsubscribe > Discussion of irrelevent e-mail is clogging my system. Discussion of irrelevent e-mail is clogging my system. It is not the reason I subscribed.
Ok, I'm usually very patient, but this is bordering on ridiculos now. Are we here to gripe about unsolicited e-mail (spam, porno, whatever..) or is this way to complain? I come home from work at night, tired like most all of you, and open my e-mail to find..........more griping!!! There hasn't been anything on this in several days worth reading, and if I wanted to listen to "griping", I would have stayed married.
