Hello, First of all thanks so much for having a list such as this for people to write to. I've been trying to unravel the mystery that surrounds my Mother's disappearance for years now here is what happened. Her name is Muriel T. Medeiros born 6-28-35 in RI she disapeared around 1970 and has not been heard from since. She just up and left her two daughters and her husband. One day she's there the next she is gone. No one in our family talked about it, my Father traveled and was gone when she left me and my sister were just moved to our Grandparents house without a word of explanation, until later placed into a foster home. I've GOT to find out what happened to her, this has been a mystery for too long!! How do i go about finding out where she is? I've tried every venue that I know of to search for clues to her past and don't know what to do now. I really need to know what happened to her when she left and have no clue where to start especially given the amount of time that has passed since her disappearance any ideas? I've tried everything from where we were abandoned at (local welfare workers etc. since we were placed in foster homes) no one has any information on her to my knowledge. Thanks for your time, Donna
today I was going through rootsweb's SSDI and decided because I was having trouble with a very phonetic last name to try their soundex system. when that proved to only make matters worse, I tried the metaphone system (both are accessible in the 'site). I don't think it works all of the time (Fenenga came back with over 5000 hits) but some names it should work really well on. I was looking for Nienhuis/Nyenhuis/Nijenhuis, and came up with several hundred of one of the spellings, but only three of another spelling. Metaphone narrowed it down to just over one hundred-an easy enough size to manage. it also added various spellings I hadn't thought of . so if you have a name that's driving you buggy, this might help. oh, the site is http://ssdi.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/ssdi.cgi
Hello: My father disappeared 40 years ago without a trace. My mother had moved away and he sent a letter giving the Victoria Post Office, General Delivery, as a mailing address. An empty fishing boat was found floating, he was the last person to rent it, but a body was never found. This was around 1959-1960. In 1966 he was declared legally dead. I believe he may be out there somewhere, but I need to know either way, dead or alive, and have been searching everywhere for the last 6 months. His name was William James Lawrence Hamilton, he went by the name Bill, born on or around Salt Spring Island, BC Canada. Birthdate (around) July 19, 1935, this may not be accurate, but close! He would be about 63-64 years old now. He loved to go fishing, was 6 ft tall, with glasses and blue eyes & blond hair. He had a brother named Ross, who had a daughter named Sheryl, she was probably born in the 1950's. If anyone knows what happened to my father, please contact me! Any information or advice welcome! Connie, have you looked at the 1920 census for New York to find your grandmother with her parents (or Uncle?) Have you tried to follow her uncle through the NY city directories, in hopes of discovering a time frame for his death? He may have had children who could help you with information regarding their cousin. Your father would have been 4-5 at the time of the divorce. Most small children can recall older folks who came to visit when they were small....were there older people who could have been the maternal grandparents, does he remember any cousins? Did he get Christmas gifts from anyone after his mother left? These people might be able to help. Often times, a cousin on the father's side may have heard stories as a young child that could help you. Was your father baptised? If so, the entire family (maternal and paternal) may have attended that particular church if they all lived in the same neighborhood. There are still people living who remember when I was baptised, and I was born in 1940. Am I correct in thinking one of the few reasons accepted for divorce in early days in New York was adultery? There may have been more to the story. While it would be nice to start with facts for today and find your grandmother, you may need to really go back further. I would also check the 1910 census to see if her parents are in the census. If she were one of the younger in a family, she might have older brothers and sisters in 1910. Does your father's birth certificate not give the birth date of his parents? What about their marriage license application. If they were married in a church there may be additonal information there. Keep looking and let us know how it all turns out! Gayle [email protected]
I really need some help here. I am at my wits end, I have tried everything I know to do. Let me share my story. My grandmother was born in 1918, Rita Margaret Carney, supposedly in NY, not sure where. I have been told that she lived with her uncle John Bannon on Bergen Av in the Bronx in 1936. She married Arthur Wright on 10-31-1936. I have a copy of the marriage cert., it lists her parents as James Carney and Agnes Swift, also from NY, but I had been told her parents came from County Mayo Ireland. In 1937 Arthur and Rita had a son, (my father), James Wright. In 1941 Arthur accused Rita of adultry and they got a divorce. She was denied custody of their son, and in the divorce papes,(which I have), it states that she was not allowed to re-marry until the death of Arthur or if she petitioned the courts for permission. I have checked with the courts that the divorce went through to see if she ever filed for re-marriage, it showed nothing, but the attorney I spoke with said she could have just never admitted ever being married before and the courts would not have checked it out, or she could have gone to another state. So there is a good possibility that her new family would never have heard of this part of her life, and all the posting I put out might not ring a bell to her family. I can only hope that someone will recognize her name and get in touch with me. My grandfather died 2 years ago and would never let us talk about her, so I really don't have much information, I do however have a picture of her and Arthur holding my father infront of the building they lived in in the Bronx. My great Aunt Dottie told us that she used to see Rita standing across the street to watch my father play shortly after the divorce. This sounds like a mother who really loved her child but was a victim of the times she lived in and had to move on without him. Her last known address was 856 Cauldwell Av., Bronx, NY. This is where she was served the divorce papers in 1941. If anyone can help me, I would greatly appreciate it. I know she might be dead by now, but I would still like to know what happened to her, and I feel I have a right to know about her, she was/ or is my grandmother. I have checked the SSDI, but not knowing her exact birthdate, I don't know what I'm looking at. Also, I'm sure she must have re-married, so how would I go about finding out what her new name would have been? Thanks for your patience in reading this, Connie from FL

You might check the weather in the area. At that time could the ground still have been frozen from a storm? May would have pretty cold I believe. I have an aunt who died in February 1920's south of OK City, and her body had to be held until a storm was over and they could get the grave dug. I may not have the right answer fo ryou...but it is a possibility. Gayle [email protected]
Have you tried requesting a copy of his military service record? A record that old would have every action included in it. We requested a copy of my dad's service record from the Army and were able to find our half-brother that my dad had no idea where to look for. (There was a monthly allotment at one time for his son's support.) With the address, we were able to trace forward. Considering the name change, maybe it'll give you a lead!
I know the month was May but perhaps the North Dakota winter was ruff and the ground was not suitable for digging(frozen?). Chuck
I would like to be offf the group.
Thanks to all who responded to my question. I suspect the most probable situation was that the ground was frozen. I live in Minnesota. My mother died in December of 1974 and she was buried in March (although the death certificate does not reflect that). Walsh county, ND is 200 or so miles north of where I live. Good point that in 1920 the equipment wasn't the same is in 1974. The death certificate said the cause of death was old age. She was 81. Vickie M
do you have info as to his age (approximate) when he disappeared? or where he was born...if i had a little more info would be glad to help you search...i'm not a researcher by any means but love to help people becky i bid you peace @~~~<~~~<~~

My father disappeared in 1923 when I was three years old. He had been in the Coast Artillery, then the Navy, and I am trying to check those out. How he came to make the switch I don't know. His name was Warren G. Waterman Jr., but at the time of my birth in San Diego he was going under the name of John Bernoy Mallory for some reason. He worked for Western Electric in Los Angeles in 1922-23, but was back in San Diego when he disappeared. So far I've found no trace of him in San Diego, but I've just started. Could use any tips or leads.
Hi all, I am new on this list. My mysterious question has to do with my great great grand mother's death and burial. In the 1920 census she and her husband were listed as living together in Wash County, ND. The church / cemetery record says she died on May 7, 1920 of old age at 81 years. She was buried in Walsh County on May 22, 1920. Why was there such a long time between her death and burial? Is there a Moravian/Czech custom to have a long wake? VickieM
Hi List, My mystery has an end but no beginning. My grandfather, Michael WUKELICH, came to America and was naturalized on 9/19/22. He met my grandmother Bertha MILLER in Buffalo, NY. My mother was born in 1929 when my grandfather was 43. He said that he had no family but when my grandmother died a daughter appeared. My mother didn't know that she existed. I am trying to find out who was his first family and when did they come to the US from Croatia. My grandparents are both dead and there is no paperwork since my mother and Uncle both thought that the other went to get everything from the apartment that my grandfather lived in. Could anyone who has the heritage of WUKLICH email me at: [email protected] Thank you in advance Theresa Coker Porier
Hello listers, Here is my family mystery. My Great Grandmother May Therrien married Leander Cassimere Leroy (b. 5 April 1857 in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, d. ???) in Manville, RI. Leander's father Cassimere Lareau emigrated from St Gregory, PQ, Canada in 1855..the name was Americanized to Leroy somehow. The mystery is..Leander and my Great Grandmother argued one day and Leander disappeared. No one ever saw/heard from him again. I don't know the date he disappeared..I do know my Grandmother barely remembered him so it must have been in the early 1900's. I haven't been able to locate any information on him. Any ideas??? Thanks, Deb Purcell Glendale, AZ

My great-grandfather, Henry M. Dixon, walked away from a prison work camp in Utah (Draper) in March of 1919. He was not returned to this prison. The family story is he died in a federal penitentiary, but the federal prison system has no record of him. He would have been about 51 yoa at the time he disappeared. Any ideas?
