    1. [GEN-UNSOLVED-MYSTERIES] Re: Adriance of Elmira, NY
    2. Frank Adriance was a doctor in Elmira , NY. He and his wife had a daughter named Linette Angevine Adriance. Linette was an only child. Linette lived with her parents all her life until they passed away. Now comes the strange part .... When Linette was 42 years old, she went to 'visit' a friend in NYC. Several months later she came back home to Elmira with an 'adopted' baby girl. On the birth certificate of the baby girl, dated Feb 26 1926, the child was called FAITH. However, the little girl never went by that name. She is still living so I wont give her name here. If anyone knows about this, they will know who she is anyway. There was NO father listed on the birth certificate. There were rumors about town that this little girl was not adopted but was the natural child of Linette but these rumors were never spoken of around FAITH. After Linette died, Faith asked a friend of her mother's if she had really been adopted. The friend said no, that she was the natural child of her mother. Unfortunately, this friend of Linette's, said that Linette had NEVER said who the father was...at least not to her. Rumors were that the father of the baby was Dr Adriance's cheauffer. It was said that after the baby came home from NYC, the cheauffer disappeared. The strange part of this is that Linette was 41 when she became pregnant....not exactly a babe in the woods. With her father being a physician, the child could have been adopted, or even aborted for that matter, without too much problem. And that certainly would have been a better solution as far as society went Im sure. I feel that perhaps, this child was NOT an accident at all. Linette had no relatives anywhere near and certainly none that she knew. She knew that when her parents died she would be completely alone. Perhaps she decided to remedy this situation by having a child. There are probably lots of people still living who were around when the rumors were flying in the late 1920s in Elmira. Is there anyone out there who knows anything about this, who the cheauffer might have been, was there another possibility of a father, or any other little bit of information? Thanks so much.....FAITH would like to know the answer to this question. [email protected] Unfortunately, I do not have access to any records in Elmira such as city directories, etc.....at the moment.

    3. Dear Jo-Ann, I recall eating at the caferteria-style restaurants, called HORN & HARDICK, when I was a girl and we went to New York City. I think the spelling is more like I wrote - at least that was the way it sounded. 2. Well, at the risk of starting WW4, let me be Jo-Ann's first supporter. This list is for unsolved mysteries, right? Jo-Ann has an unsolved mystery. Her mystery (in my opinion) belongs here more than some of the other so-called mysteries posted here. Not finding someone in a census is a genealogical problem, and in my opinion would NOT be considered a mystery. Trying to find someone whose name is on the online phone directories isn't a mystery either (in my opinion). Aren't we on this list to help people solve mysteries? Jo-Ann has a web page. She has posted messages on adoption boards, mailing lists, and newsgroups. If this isn't the purpose of the list, someone please let me know PRIVATELY, and I'll unsubscribe. Judy

    1. [GEN-UNSOLVED-MYSTERIES] sad but true (next to last post for today
    2. I guess I should describe my adoptive dad better, as several people have said he couldn't have had money if he was a super. he learned and was trained as a mechanical engineer although never officially when he was in merchant marines super of a building as in maintained the whole place what ever needed any type of repair such as: electrical mechanical remodeling plumbing you name it he did it also worked for anyone who needed anything he had a reputation as the man with the hat and he rode a bicycle all over. he never spent money on us or himself. he redid a house and it looked like a shack when he started and then a mansion when he was done. he took us to see the beautiful house while we live in a shack. he was a "jack of all trades" and did it all for cash nothing turned in to I.R.S. at one time he was worth 1/4 of a million he paid cash for our home in NY and the one we moved to in pa I mean cash as in bills not check i am not kidding i saw with my own aging eyes he was a miser though when it came to us he lent money out at 20% interest back then and sometimes he got paid back and other times he didn't and he couldn't sue as he had no legal proof that he had any money at all i suspect he was loan shark or illegally involved in a lot of things. he carried a gun and all his cash in his socks. he died broke as he had no legal records to claim just scraps of paper saying so and so owes me 100,000.00 due on such and such date but they were never notarized and the people were no where to be found. my story is a real soap opera the sad part is he made us live on goodwill and had to wear coats to bed we never hand a new thing in our life. we ate the food that the stores stick in the carts like the cans that are dented or have no labels and sometimes the cans were pet food (no my mom did not make us eat it) he would buy the whole cart for a few bucks and that was our groceries said it was a waste to buy real food. we slept in coats and sleeping bags cause he did not want to pay the gas bill as it was stupid. he rigged the meter for a while and then he got caught so instead of getting it turned on from con edison we got dressed in front of the stove. . my adop moms favorite song was second hand rose. and she was so mad at him cause he had the money. it would have been different if we knew he didn't have it but in his eyes we were not a good investment. In other words he would not make any money on us. He also was sexually abusive to me and my mom turned to drinking so she was mentally not there either. he never wanted any kids she did cause she was so lonely and he was in the service and gone a lot and then when he returned he was never home. gone from 7am til 7pm every dat 7 days a week. that is why i guess i ache so bad to find family. lol Joann

My father-in-law was Douglas L., as were the checks he received. However, in the SSDI, it only says D. Grantham. This has worked on several others that I've been researching. Just a suggestion.

They have a web site, but go thru one of the search engines. I've found info on retired or deceased attorneys here, and if you e-mail them and tell them what you're looking for, they are very helpful. Good luck. Black market adoption non-identifying adoptive info also probably indicates that the info is fictitious. Someone in your a-family knows the truth. I would concentrate on (1) trying to find any living members of your a-family, and (2) trying to identify the mystery man (Joe or Jo???) in the pictures. Please keep us informed of your progress. 1. [GEN-UNSOLVED-MYSTERIES] Re: Arthur Murry Dance studio letter
    2. Gayle Gardner
    3. May I make a comment about the suggested letter to be written to the Arthur Murray Dance Studio. I, as a person who helps a lot of adoptees and birth parents search, observe that the letter gives far too much information. Many business people are afraid to give out personal information, as even public librarians are sometimes very cautious about helping adoptees. They don't want to interfere or infringe on anyones rights. Therefore, if I were writing the letter, I would write it that I am seeking information regarding my "aunt" who we have lost contact with. Give a bit of information about the time frame, etc. and ask if they can give information. But until I know the feelings of the librarian, courthouse official, anyone I am seeking such information, I NEVER tell them I am working on an adoption. I am not interested in responding to a great deal of mail about people's "rights" etc. I am just saying, don't tell anymore than you need to. .

    2. I agree the less information sent the better, after many years of research I have found people are more eager to help if little is known. Best of luck. Kathy

    1. [GEN-UNSOLVED-MYSTERIES] [[email protected]] Adoption Mystery continues
    2. Jo-Ann ~~ I don't think anyone is getting sick of you. This story is very intriguing. You are doing well in understanding the clues. Don't give up hope. I, for one, am with you all the way. Please keep me posted of any new information. [email protected] Beck 4 of us grew up together as sibs ellen 10/28/57 donna 3/10/59 me 9/25/60 alexander 10/15/64 alexander was from a jewish family we know that for a fact and is not blood at all. talked to ellen my sister yes she is my real sister at least half. she says my adop mom told her that my adopted dad was donnas father mother unknown as of now but may have been named katheryn. he may have had a double life with donnas mother. as he was away from 7am to 7pm mon thru sun. every day now me and ellen had the same mother or father or maybe both it is possible that the mother of donna was also our mother but my adop dad was definetely was not our birth father. my non id does not match his birth yr. this same mother also had an older male that she kept which would have been born before 1957. she was 31 in 1960 , so i am looking for a male born before 1957 whos mother would have been younger then 28 in 57 .this would be my brother how much earlier i dont know they lived on east 4th street in manhattan where he was a super of the building he never had a legit job. did not like to pay taxes. i believe in 1957 as she remebers they lived there. then we moved to 1964 e 9th street and i have checked that area and no one lives there now that new anything. he was very secretive. and gone alot. and she now remebers being told about a lawyer named gladstone??? so i do have more info and facts and now a new angle the key seems to be with my adopt dad and his mysterious past. as he paid 10,000.00 for me. his name was alexander but for some reason people called him ben yes i have his ss application and his death certificate and all the info is the same. his family lives here in pa and knows nothing in fact most are not even alive anymore. im sure he covered his tracks very well. he worked at this horn and hartard? and rudleys rest all under the table and did maint work jo-ann

    1. Re: [GEN-UNSOLVED-MYSTERIES] SSDI
    2. I have wanted to respond to these items about SSDI. My father received benefits ever since the early 1980s, but he is not on any list that I have seen, so there are those who are not on it. I was his bookkeeper so I know that he received his check every month. Jeannie :) Publisher of the Jericho Wall Genealogy Newsletter w/the focus on the missing women in our trees.
