The Times, Monday, Apr 01, 1799; pg. 3; Issue 4447; col A On the evening of the 31st of January last, HUMPHREY SENHOUSE, of Netherhall, in the County of Cumberland, Esq. received by the post of that day an anonymous letter, (having the Wigton post mark upon it,) demanding that he the said Humphrey SENHOUSE, should deposit the sum of 200L. in gold or Bank of England Notes, at a certain place, and for the purpose in the said letter described; and threatening, if that demand was not immediately complied with, that his buildings should be laid in ashes in a very short time. On the 18th of February last, a similar anonymous letter, was received by Sir WILFRID LAWSON, of Brayton, in the County of Cumberland, Bart. (also appearing to have the Wigton post mark upon it,) demanding that he the said Wilfrid LAWSON, should deposit the sum of 500L. in gold or Bank notes, at a certain place named in the letter. A man of some property has been committed to Carlisle gaol, charged with being the writer of these and other letters, &c. demanding money for the purchase of arms, &c. to aid in effecting a revolution, and threatening plunder and murder in case of a refusal. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Petra
