A CASE FOR ATTENTION. _________ Sir, - Will you please grant me a little space in your widely read paper to draw public attention to a very sad case of need in our midst. William GRAY, married and an ex-serviceman, has been suffering some time from a painful malady, and is now a patient in the Cockermouth Workhouse Infirmary. His wife and children are residents in the town, and, I believe, are in sore straits on the account of their breadwinner's sickness. GRAY, being an ex-soldier I am sure that we have one or more ex-officers in the town who would be glad to take this matter up on the poor soldier's behalf, or probably the United Services Club would arrange a benefit ball or something of that sort so as to enable his family to carry on until GRAY is fit to follow his employment. I am aware that the people of Cockermouth have been asked a great deal during the last few years, and I know that they have never been behind with their generous support, which fact has given me courage to write this letter. In my opinion it is very hard if an ex-soldier who is 'down and out' has only the Workhouse to look forward to for a little relief. That much quoted phrase, 'Lest we forget', should ever be in our mind when these most deserving cases crop up. - Thanking you in anticipation, yours truly, J. W. L.
