From The Times, Friday, Jun 14, 1816, posted with permission of the transcriber, Petra Michinson. Geo. At Carlisle Whitsuntide hiring-day, on Saturday, there was a great number of servants in want of employment, of both sexes. Men's wages were very low, and few engagements made. Women's wages were rather better, in consequence of a greater demand. During the bustle a great many robberies were committed.
