I know - today - women - more often than not - do wear trousers - these days - but - in my youth - it wasn't all that common to see - & women wore dresses / skirts ... I've just watched "The Sound of Music" and all the women in Austria were dresses / skirts --- so I just wondered why ... Sue

Because it wasn't ladylike to wear trousers cos that's what men wore. I have theory but I think it is to do with hygiene. As to why we wear trousers now it is far more comfortable and I have not worn a skirt for about 10yrs now......I do not even own one.
