There was an average attendance at the Wigton Fair on Tuesday, when showers fell during the day. There was a good demand for boys and youths, and the wages ruling were similar to those at other centres. There was numerous side shows on the Market Hill and on the streets, and dancing took place during the day and in the evening at different Halls in the town. ___________________ EXCESSIVE SPEED AT BOTHEL. Robert BATH, motor driver, 1 Mitchell Street, Airdrie, was fined £2 at Wigton Police Court on Tuesday for driving a motor omnibus at Bolton-Low-Houses at a speed of 40.9 miles per hour, on the 14th October. P. C. DICKINSON, Whitehaven, of the Motor Patrol, gave evidence. ____________________ DOCTOR FINED. Dr. Victor W. MAXWELL, of 30, Queen Street, was fined 20s at the Police Court on Thursday, for leaving his car standing without lights. Three previous convictions for motoring offences were read out, and Mr. W. C. SUMNER, defending, said his client had left the lights on, but the car was an open one, and the children playing about may have touched the switch. WIGTON POLICE COURT. ______ IREBY MOTORIST FINED. Joseph McDUFFIE , Old Vicarage, Ireby, was charged at the Wigton Police Court, on Tuesday, with driving a motor omnibus in King Street, Wigton, he not being the holder of a license for the purpose, on the 14th October. Defendant, in a letter, admitted the offence. Sergeant KENNEDY, Wigton said defendant failed to produce his driver's license. Witness served him with a form to produce it within five days and defendant produced one taken out three days after witness had stopped him. He explained to witness later that his license expired on the 6th October. Defendant was fined 10s. _____________________ THE CHURCH BELLS WERE RINGING. At Wigton Police Court on Tuesday, James REED, coal miner, Chaple Row, Prospect, was charged with riding a bicycle without a front light between Aspatria and Westnewton, at 6-55 p.m., on the 18th October. Defendant said he was not guilty at that time. The Church bells were ringing when he came through Westnewtown. (Laughter). P. C. COWARD, Aspatria, proved the case. Defendant, he said, got off the machine when he saw witness. When told he would be reported, defendant replied, "Alright, if you think it is worth while." Defendant was fined 10s and 1s 6d costs.
