Transcribed by Ann Selchick. Geo. THE NORTHERN NEWS, OCTOBER 9, 1897. CYCLING CHAT ___ RULES OF THE ROAD. 1. In meeting keep to the left. In overtaking pass on the right; led horses always to be met and passed on the side on which the man in charge is. In meeting or passing restive horses, a slow pace and a few words form the best course. As a sudden dismount generally has a bad effect, a dismount should only be made when requested. 2. If any vehicle or rider is passing, keep a good distance to the left. 3. Before passing foot passengers, rider, or vehicle, notice should be given at sufficient distance, by whistle, bell or otherwise. 4. Never pass between two vehicles or riders when overtaking them, and get a good distance ahead of any vehicle, or rider you pass before riding directly in front. 5. It is illegal to ride on any path specially set aside for foot passengers. 6. A lighted lamp should always be used between sunset and sunrise. 7. Riders should retain full control of their machines when riding down dangerous hills; and a dismount is advisable on approaching any unknown descent which cannot be seen to be clear to the bottom. _____
