    3. Transcribed by Ann Selchick. Geo. THE WHITEHAVEN NEWS, SEPT. 19. 1907 A YOUTH FINED AT KESWICK FOR CHIPPING A DRUID STONE. ______ The first prosecution in the Lake District under the Ancient Monuments Protection Act took place at Keswick on Saturday. It was authorized by the First Commissioner of Works. The offender, John RAINE, 17, clerk, of Coxhoe, county Durham, did not appear to answer the summons. It was shown that the accused had chipped his surname in six inch letters upon one of the stones in the inner ring of the Druid’s Circle, Keswick., which is a scheduled monument under the Act. The young man had also written in lead pencil upon one of the caution notice boards: “John RAINE, Coxhoe, county Durham, August 17th, 1907.” When approached by a police sergeant at Coxhoe on the 25th August, the defendant admitted the offence and expressed his sorrow; he did not “think there was any harm, the stones being so ancient.” The Bench inflicted a fine of £3, including costs, with orders to reserve the charge which will be incurred in effacing the objectionable lettering. __________
