Gibson DEES (in the chair), the Mayor J. I. FISHER, W. M’GOWAN and T. MACHELL, Esqs., Jessie WILLIAMSON, 57, widow, was charged with attempting to commit suicide on the 8th inst. Superintendent HOPE explained the prisoner attempted to commit suicide [and threw] herself into the sea, and he was afraid she had done this while under the influence of drink. Catherine TROUSDALE, the wife of John TROUSDALE of Tangier Street, Whitehaven, stated that at about a quarter to nine on Sunday morning, September 8th, she was walking on the North Wall and when she reached the end of the pier she looked round and saw a woman some distance away walking in the same direction. Witness walked round the lighthouse and upon getting to the other side she noticed the woman had disappeared, and she heard a scream. She hurried to the place where she had seen the woman and found a cape lying on the wall at the far steps. She then saw the woman floating in the water and sent her little girl to fetch assistance. Mr. BANKS, who was at the dock gates, came and got the woman out of the water. John BANKS, dock gateman, stated that there would be from 12 to 14 feet of water at the place where he, with assistance, got the woman out, she was unconscious. Sergeant RAE stated that the prisoner had been attended by Dr. DICKSON for four days. Witness charged her, and she replied, “I don’t remember anything about it.” Prisoner had nothing to say in reply to the Bench, and her daughter promised to look after her in the future. The Chairman (to prisoner): We are told this is the result of taking drink, and it is to be hoped it will be a caution to you and that you will leave drink alone in the future. If you will do that and take care of yourself and live quietly with your daughter, you may go, but let this be a caution to you. ______
