    1. The Times, 25 Jan 1866 - Loss of the London (16) - Victims from Cumberland
    2. Geo.
    3. The Times, Thursday, Jan 25, 1866; pg. 9; Issue 25404; col G THE WRECK OF THE LONDON. - Ten persons from this county, it appears, have perished with the ill-fated vessel, one of them, William GRAHAM, together with his wife and three children, having gone from Carlisle. It is a sad story - one which cannot be read even by strangers without most painful feelings. The names of the unfortunate voyagers are as follows: - William GRAHAM, tailor, aged 51 years; Ellen, his wife, 49 years; George, his son, 10 years; a daughter, 3 years; a baby, aged 4 months; Thomas GRAHAM, aged 40 years; Mary, his wife, aged 27 years; David GRAHAM, aged 37 years; David M'VITTIE, aged 30 years, blacksmith, Newtown; and John LITTLE, aged 30 years, fireman on the North British Railway. The three GRAHAMs were brothers, sons of John and Mary GRAHAM, late of Paddenstown, near Longtown, parish of Kirkandrews-on-Esk. Thomas had been out in Victoria 12 years, and David followed him four years afterwards, and had since been engaged in business with him. Success followed their farming operations until they were enabled to purchase an estate. In their prosperity the brothers were not unmindful of their old home; and during the prevalence of distress at Longtown, in consequence of the cotton famine, they generously sent over a sum of 60L. for the relief of the sufferers. They also sent a large amount of relief to Manchester. In August last they came over to England with a view of seeing their friends and of purchasing implements. Upwards of 1,000L. they laid out in this way, and sent out before them a portable steam-engine, a bone-mill, two wine-presses, ploughs, and a variety of other implements for the farm. Thomas had another purpose to effect also in visiting the old country, and that was to marry and take home with him a young woman named Sarah BRUCE, 27 years of age, a native of Banff. They were married only about a week before they left Carlisle to take up their berths on board the ill-fated ship. Their brother, William GRAHAM, who for 20 years was in the employment of Mr. NOBLE, tailor, Carlisle, agreed to go out with them, they paying his passage, and he took with him his wife and family, as stated above. LITTLE and M'VITTIE, friends of the GRAHAMs, were also going out with them. Both men were in the employ of the North British Railway Company - LITTLE as fireman, running between Longtown and Gretna, and M'VITTIE as a blacksmith, at the engine-sheds, Newtown, near Carlisle. LITTLE was a remarkably steady and amiable young man. He was the eldest of a family of 11 children, and is survived both by his father and mother, who reside in Nicholforest. For a time he was engaged at ATTWOOD's Zinc-works, in the Brampton district. Afterwards he was engaged for about two years as a packer in Messrs. CARR and Co.'s biscuit-works, in Carlisle, which service he left on obtaining a situation as a cleaner on the North British Railway. He remained in the service of that company until his departure for Australia, and for the last three years had run as fireman over the Gretna and Longtown Junction. His original intention was to go out to Queensland, and Mr. M'VITTIE, on learning this, wrote to him asking him to accompany him and the GRAHAMs out to Australia, a proposal to which he at once gave his consent. The whole party left the Citadel station on the 27th of December last, and a large number of friends - who gave three hearty cheers when the train started - assembled to bid them farewell. When on board the London, and shortly before the steamer went out, LITTLE, who described himself as very sick at the time, in consequence of the sail from Gravesend, wrote a letter to his brother in Carlisle, requesting him not to go out to America, as he was thinking of doing in the spring, until he should hear from him, as he would wish him to go out to Australia to him should he be prosperous there. News of the loss of the ship was taken to LITTLE's parents on Thursday by the brother referred to and by Mr. W. LITTLE, of South Vale. It was a sad blow, indeed, to the poor old people, the father regretting bitterly that he could not look upon his dead son's face. - Cumberland Pacquet. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    2. Geo.
    3. The Times, Saturday, Jan 27, 1866; pg. 12; Issue 25406; col G THE LOSS OF THE LONDON. --------------------- TO THE EDITOR OF THE TIMES. Sir, - There has been so much written about the loss of the London that perhaps you may not think it advisable to admit any more remarks upon the subject, but as I do not see that any one has hit the right nail on the head I venture to trouble you with this. Among the many opinions advanced - some of overloaded decks, and one about the want of seamanship in having royal yards across in such weather - no one appears to take into consideration the state of the crew, who shipped in London only a few days before, strangers to each other and the captain, and part of whom were even changed at Plymouth. Fancy the amount of discipline in such a case. Even in a newly commissioned man-of-war, caught in such a terrible gale as that was so soon after leaving harbour, I know from experience the difficulty any captain would have in getting his spars and ship properly made snug. What must have been poor Captain MARTIN's position, - not knowing one of the crew, and not one of the crew or the officers being able to hail a man by his name? No one who has not been to sea can appreciate the amount of trouble that the want of this knowledge causes. I must say I am of opinion that much of the danger which besets every merchant ship that goes to sea is the fashion of shipping new crews, who come on board half-seas over, and come to themselves, as it were, in the middle of a gale of wind in the Bay of Biscay. I am, Sir, your obedient servant, W. HUGH PHIPPS, Commander R. N. Marine Society's ship Warspite, Charlton, S.E., Jan. 25. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    3. Hi Jean.... Hope you and John are doing OK these days, with your cooler weather. Re ..Reunion ... Karen and Mark also had a bad journey, travelling UP to the Reunion ... hitting the same troublspot in Oxford. Having heard through a message from Pat whilst we were eating our Sunday meal, that the same area was just as bad, Howie found a route to avoid it for Karen, we still hit some problems; then just before we reached the area when Karen was to drop my Linda and I off to Dave who was waiting to pick us up, we found out that their route on the M25 was also closed between some of the junctions. Big thanks also go to Karen for picking us up on Saturday and taking us to Bourton-on-the-Water. Remember the Ozzie song 'the Pub with no Beer'.. well our Pub for our Sunday meal had no Lemonade or Coke. The meals that were ordered by the Trivvies were Good, plus there were also 3 large bowls of Chips [the UK type ] and 3 bowls of mixed Salad, and we went through quite a few jugs of water. Most of us found room for some decadent desserts, then it was time for hugs and goodbyes, until a future time in 2007 ... ??? 3. Sounds like you had a wonderful day Gwen....you lucky devil you!!! :) DiDi http://photobucket.com/albums/d100/didi_45 Nick and I arrived home about 5.00 pm after a wonderful time at the 2006 Trivvie reunion! We had left home on Sunday morning at 8.30 am heading for Winchcombe station which turned out to be in the village of Greet! We arrived at about 9.45 in good time for meeting everyone at 10.00 am. In the station car park was an impressive gathering of classic cars with more arriving by the minute. After a short wait Sue and Andy arrived followed by Miriam, Irene, Wolfie with her friend Yards, Howie and Bron. We had a cup of coffee and bought our tickets for the train ride between Winchcombe, Toddington and Cheltenham. Soon Karen, Mark, Marlene and Linda arrived and we boarded the train for our trip. It was lovely to see everyone again except that Sharla had been unable to make it and Pat, Shaun Liz and Peter had unfortunately had to return home, and Jenny sent her apologies for not being able to come. I was envious hearing about the great time that was had by all on the previous Saturday and vowed to stay for the whole weekend next time!! More to follow later...must look at my filming and photos!! 3. We were never going to stay for Sunday, Gwen. We never do because each reunion has been a long way from home for us. To other people, a 4 hour drive is nothing, to Shaun, it's more like an 8 hour drive. He has to stop every hour or 2 & unfortunately, we were unable to do so on Friday cos there was nowhere TO stop. It's getting to the stage now, where anything north of the M25 is going to mean we can't go. But, we've had 3 great reunions, so can't complain if we don't go to any others. Pat.xxx :o)) A Maid of Kent What a horrific journey Pat & Shaun!! No wonder you didn't stay today. We must arrange somewhere a bit nearer to you next year. Hope you'll both feel better tomorrow. 3. We arrived in Cheltenham at about 5pm coming from the Forest of Dean, having just spent a few days in the Brecon Beacons - it should have been a week in Snowdonia and ancestor searching in the Liverpool Records Office, but this holiday was fated from the start and delayed yet again whe n I found that the hot water tank had sprung a leak!!!! We had a lovely time - taking two hours over breakfast!!! How decadent. It was very hot in Birdland and Sue and I were glad to sit under the trees by the river for part of the time. What more is there to say about the meal - well a lot really, but maybe it wouldn't be so funny for those thgat were not there. Anyway on Sunday morning we all gave a score of 10 for Saturday night - it was a very busy night and even Mark managed to enjoy himself. Sunday Peter and I left after breakfast - the trivvies then had a quiet reunion <G> - as we needed to return home so I could visit my Dad who appears to have taken a turn for the worse again. Like Pat, we too got stuck at that roundabout and managed a 2 miles in 1 hour!!! We enjoyed ourselves so much - thanks Sue for organising us, although I know that sometimes the trivvies can be a pain and not always reply to email requests for information. And next year - will there be a next year - please Liz

    3. The train trip was good though rather hot in the carriages, standing by the open window was better...marvellous views. We stopped at Cheltenham and had a coffee or looked round the station shop then on to Toddington and back to Winchcombe again. At the Corner Cupboard we had a natter over drinks then a delicious meal....the puddings were especially yummy....forget the diets for today!! We all seem to have been served the meal we had ordered previously which was rather efficient I thought, and thanks to Sue for organising the trip. A lovely day in great company!! Photos to follow. Hugs, Gwen

    2. PJK :o))
    3. Sue & Andy arrived at the unsociable hour of 2:45 AM !! Or thereabouts !! Sue had been a bit poorly, so they'd left it to the last minute to leave & coming down at night was better for them. After breakfast on Saturday, we went to Bourton on the Water, a beautiful Cotswold village. It was GORGEOUS. We went to Birdland, a lovely park place with penguins - including a baby one born on 30 May - flamingos, parrots, Kookaburras & countless other birds. It really was fab. Shaun had to use his wheelchair, though, but when we left there, he decided to use his crutches to go round the model village cos there was no room for wheelchairs. It was beautiful - an exact rfeplica of part of the village. It was quite small, though. Compact & bijou !! In the evening, we had a meal in the Beefeater next to the Travel Inn. The food was OK, but it was made better by the brilliant company. We had such a laugh - as usual, the other diners gave us funny looks, but as we were leaving the waitress said it was lovely to see people enjoying thmselves. We WERE loud, but what do they expect from a group of 14 people ??!! Part way through the evening, some strange fella called John phoned, as well. Dunno who he was, but he certainly seemed to enjoy being passed round the table, chatting to us all !! He DID say that he was quite willing to hold a reunion on his narrow boat - be a bit of a squash, but great for hugs !! It was also Karen's birthday, so most of us went back to her room for a while & continued the party !! :o) It was SO hot though, that Mark & I kept sliding off the bed !! (Enough said there !!) Today, the journey home wasn't as bad, but it took us 45 minutes to drive 800 yards at that bloody roundabout again !! It took 5 & a half hours to get home today, so that wasn't too bad - & we managed to make 3 stops, so although Shaun's very achy & stiff, he isn't as bad as he was on Friday. He's off tomorrow so that's not so bad - we worked it this way so that he'd have a day to rest before going back to work. It was a shame we couldn't *do* today at Winchcombe, & see Howard & Bron, Nick & Gwen, but we knew we wouldn't be able to do that & then the drive home. It was just too far. Maybe if the next reunion is closer to Kent, we'll be able to. Just got to sort the piccies out now & then I'll post some to My Family tomorrow. Going to have an early night now. ZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz !!! Pat.xxx :o)) A Maid of Kent

    1. 2006 Reunion - part 1
    2. PJK :o))
    3. Briefly: Friday getting to Cheltenham was HORRENDOUS, Saturday was WONDERFUL, today, getting home was AWFUL !! Travel & me just do NOT go together !! :o) According to the map & directions, it should have taken us 3 hours & 37 minutes to get to the Travel Inn at Cheltenham from Ramsgate. We thought it'd take us about 5 hours because of the stops we'd have to make for Shaun. Well, we left home at 8:50am & pulled up outside the Travel Inn 8 & a half hours later at 5:20pm!!! There we were, merrily pootling along, when there appeared a sign on the M25 saying junction 9 was closed. We were all herded off at junction 8 & the volume of traffic meant it took us 3 hours to do 15 miles !!! We managed to fight our way through Ewell & Epsom & found our way onto the M25 at junction 10. Luckily, it was open from there to junction 16, which was where we had to join the M40. Everything was OK then, for a while, but when we reached Wheatley (where last year's reunion was), there were roadworks at a major roundabout. We waited in a LONG queue at traffic lights for 35 minutes - why is it that we ALWAYS get the lights where they only allow 2 vehicles to go through before the lights turn red again ??? According to our directions, we then had to turn right at the roundabout - signposted Cheltenham. Guess what ?? No roundabout, no signpost. So, we carried on & found ourselves in the middle of Oxford. So, we turned round & found that the major works on the roundabout that we'd got stuck at the lights on was THE roundabout. Only problem was - it didn't LOOK like a roundabout !! It looked like a big muddy hill in the middle of the road !! (Karen & Mark got caught out here, too, so I didn't feel QUITE so stoooooooooopid !!!) We had to stop in a lay by for Shaun to get out & stretch - there had been nowhere for him to get out for over 6 hours & he was in a lot of pain. His legs wouldn't lock, so I had to almost lift him out as best I could & virtually carry him round the car. After 15 minutes, we decided we'd better get on or we'd not get to Cheltenham at all !! When we eventually got there, about an hour & half later (more traffic delays), Wolfie was our saviour & helped carry our bags to the room. Shaun had a couple of hours to try to come back to life & at 7:30pm, those of us there - Liz & Peter, Wolfie & Yards, Miriam & Irene, Shaun & I, went for dinner. Marlene & Linda bussed in from Tewkesbury to join us. We expected Sue & Andy, but they didn't arrive till later. MUCH later !! Part 2 to follow. Pat.xxx :o)) A Maid of Kent
