I've never been to Kew - so can't comment ---- but ---- if it has one more parking space it'll be 100% better ... Coming from Oop Norf - we 'have' to rely on the car - & Myddleton Street was a nightmare .... I had to go in the building whilst Andy stayed outside - waiting for the uniformed officials .. . Where in London it is is of little importance to us --- whether Islington or Sarf of the Rivver ... What's another few miles on top of 100+ ... :-))) Sooooooo - If Kew is a nice building - and it's got car-parking - - - then I m all for the move .... Thanks for the information Karen ... Sue OH NO Big Grrrrrrooooaaaaaaaaaannnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn After our dreadful journey from Chesham to Kew and an even worse one back, wasn't ever looking forward to going back there. Guess that might be the end of checking results up in London. The Kew site is in a nice building and in lovely grounds, if you drive a car Public Transport has gone downhill though. Marlene

the info in the following is quite interesting. Karen The National Archives to move its Family Records Centre staff and services to Kew The National Archives and the Office for National Statistics (ONS) today made a joint announcement about the provision of services to family historians. As part of a review of strategy, which has focused on the huge changes in information management over the last 10 years, The National Archives is announcing its intention to move its Family Records Centre (FRC) staff and services to Kew from their current location at Myddelton Street, Islington, by the end of 2008. The National Archives and ONS have for some time managed the FRC as a joint operation in Myddelton Street, Islington. Users can access historic census returns in The National Archives part of the Centre and establish basic details of births, deaths and marriages in the indexes maintained by ONS prior to ordering copies of relevant certificates. ONS has an extensive project in hand to digitise registration records and modernise other aspects of service provision, but has not yet made data and documents available online to the same extent as The National Archives. Over the coming months ONS will be reviewing its future requirements for services at FRC in the light of this project and The National Archives' plans to relocate its service to Kew. The review will be carried out in close collaboration with The National Archives to ensure that service delivery by the two organisations continues to be as closely aligned as possible. James Strachan, Director of Public Services and Marketing for The National Archives, said: "We have already made most of our material housed at the FRC available online. We remain committed to providing high-quality services to family historians, and are therefore planning to develop new online services that reflect customers' needs, and to integrate FRC onsite services at Kew during 2008. We will retain a dedicated family history service, and retain the jobs of our FRC staff in the new service at Kew." Peter Murphy, Director of Registration Services at ONS, said: "The hard copy indexes of birth, death and marriage registration, which are available at the FRC, remain for now the resource enabling the Registrar General to meet her statutory obligation to make indexes available to the public. Clearly advances in technology now permit other approaches to providing public access and that is what our review will be concentrating on. We will work closely with National Archives colleagues in conducting the review and hope to be able to reveal its main conclusions by the autumn of this year." --------------

From The Cumberland Pacquet, Thursday, January 30, 1902, posted with permission of the transcriber, Diane Moore. Geo. ********** LOCAL POLICE COURTS. ____ Maryport ____ FRIDAY, JANUARY 24. Before J. COCKTON (chairman), J. WILLIAM- SON, J. MAUGHAN, T. CAREY, and A. SHARP, Esqs. ********** VACCINATION EXEMPTIONS. John Hillary FEARON, coal miner, Crosby Villa, John WATSON, coal miner, Dearham, Robert LITTLE, india rubber merchant, Maryport, and John Dockray HOLLIDAY, coal miner, Ellenborough, were granted vaccination exemption certificates. After granting them, the Chairman said the Bench had no power to refuse as the applicants did not believe in vaccination. At the same time he must say that the Bench considered that at this time it was highly dangerous not to have a child vaccinated. The magistrates were of that opinion and had had their own children vaccinated, and why the applicants should claim exemption at this highly dangerous time they failed to see. He simply wished to state his views, although it was perfectly lawful and leg- itimate to apply for exemption.

Posted with permission of the transcriber, Barb. Baker. Geo. CARLISLE PATRIOT, Saturday, November 18, 1843 / NEWS. HEALTH OF TOWNS..................A HINT. The Commissioners of Police, with the view of improving the amenity, and sanitory condition of the city, have recently been making an effort to have all the dungsteads and closes in the city placed under their own regulation, and cleaned at the public expense, so far as the proceeds from the sale of the manure might be inadequate for this purpose. Out of the 1400 circulars sent to the proprietors of these places it appears that only 500 have replied, 300 of which assent to, and 200 dissent from, the proposed arrangement. In the meantime, therefore, the matter has been delayed. As it is the general opinion, however, that the health and cleanliness of the city would gain greatly by this proposal, it is to be hoped that the police board will be able to carry it into effect by the terms of Whitsunday next............"Glasgow Herald".....[It is greatly to be desired that some similar arrangement should be adopted in Carlisle, or at all events that the police should have instructions to see the general cleanliness of the town more strictly attended to. We have repeatedly said that there is no city in England with more facilities for cleanliness than Carlisle, and yet there are few more shamefully neglected. The principal streets alone are tolerable, but the moment the pedestrian quits these, the most disgusting nuisances meet him at every turn, ,and no effort is made to amend the evil. On market days in particular, even the principal streets are not free from indecent and abominable nuisances; no female can appear in public without being offended at every turn, and there is certainly no department that requires so much the attention of the authorities. We wish the new mayor would employ upon these nuisances, that industry implied in the proverb - in this respect it is highly desirable that "the new broom should sweep clean". - Ed. C.P. ]
Just saw this on the Sussex-Plus List. Interesting, what? Geo. I recently responded to an email on another list, which in turn sent me to a website where the letter (below) could be found. The email urged that we forward a copy to our MP's in the hope of gaining an early release date. I duly sent a copy to my MP. I later read another email on the same list that claimed the person advising us to contact our MP's was an agitator, just trying to stir up more trouble, and nothing would be gained, as there is no chance of an early release, WHATSOEVER! Today I received a reply from my MP, in which he thanked me for my email and stated "I do think you raise an interesting and important point and I have, as requested, written to the Secretary of State in the Department for Constitutional Affairs, requesting that he respond to your concerns." He finished by saying he would be in touch again, once he had received a reply. I hope others will take the time to read the info in the following letter, and make their own minds up whether it's worth contacting their own MP's, after all, nothing ventured, nothing gained! NO REPLY'S thank you, as I've a hectic weekend ahead. As a census historian who needs to consult the 1911 Census, I would be grateful if you would ask the Minister of State, Department for Constitutional Affairs to ensure that the successful applicant for work on the 1911 Census Online Project will have a contractual duty to gradually release sections of the English and Welsh 1911 census, county-by-county, beginning in 2006 or as soon as possible thereafter. You may have heard that the National Archives has started work on the 1911 Census Online Project but it is planning to keep the 1911 census closed to inspection until 2012, even though the Freedom of Information Act 2000 abolished the 100-year closure rule for ALL censuses. So the National Archives appears to be planning to flout one important provision of the FOI Act - the abolition of 100-year census closure. A similar thing happened between 1959 and 1966, when the statutory closure period for English and Welsh censuses was 50 years. The 50-year old 1871, 1881, 1891, 1901 and 1911 censuses were not released for public inspection between 1959 and 1966, so the provisions of the Public Records Act 1958 were flouted. By keeping the censuses closed, the government avoided enormous public expenditure on micro-filming the records. In 1966, the 100-year census closure rule was imposed by the Registrar General and the Lord Chancellor, against strong opposition from the Lord Chancellor's Advisory Council on Public Records and without MPs being consulted or given an opportunity to vote on the matter. The decision is estimated to have saved £40m in public expenditure. So I would be glad if you would contact the minister on my behalf. And I would be pleased if you would also sign House of Commons Early Day Motion 2330 on the Release of the 1911 Census. You may be aware that the EDM states: That this House notes that the Freedom of Information Act 2000 abolished the 100-year closure rule which was applied to English and Welsh decennial census records between 1966 and 2004; further notes that contractors have been invited to tender by 30th June 2006 for work on the 1911 Census Online Project; and urges Ministers to ensure that the successful applicant has a contractual duty to gradually release sections of the 1911 Census Online, county-by-county, beginning in 2006 or as soon as possible thereafter. You have my permission to copy this letter to the minister.
