    3. Hi, Johno. It was great to hear your new audio blog, mate, and good to know that you are still looking on the bright side of life, despite the disappointing prognosis on your health problems. I'm sorry that there is nothing they can do to assist your sight. I hoped there might have been some treatment that might have improved it at least enough for you to see your way around. This growing old is a right b****r, mate - but it sure beats the alternative, eh? Best Regards to you all, Geo. Hello Everyone Hope this email finds you all well. The latest edition of my voice over is at the link below - all organised by Cathy and Michael. http://www.connolley.co.uk/Bloggo_de_Johno.htm Take care all Kindest Regards Johno

    3. Oh Liz . . .. I'm so sorry . . . you will all miss him dreadfully. It's difficult to put into words . . . but there seems to be such a strong bond between many couples of yours and my parents' generation. A quiet sense of Love, Devotion, Duty and Dignity that's really very special. It was great that you could all spend so much precious time together. 3. My condolences to you all Liz . Your Dad couldn't have wished for a more devoted family who made his passing so peaceful. We lost a good friend yesterday. He'd been in hospital for a week and was not expected to last the day when he went in, but said his goodbyes and was also with his family at his passing. 3. Just to let you know that Dad died peacefully on 3 July, aged 87, after 4 long months in hospital. He had had a series of mini strokes (small vessel cerebrovascular disease) and we saw him pass through many different stages which caused him a great amount of frustration and anxiety. My mother visited him each day and only missed three in the whole of this time, despite her physical infirmities; her devotion was a lesson in true love but that added to the family's concerns and worries and our hearts break for her too. He was on diamorphine for his last 5 days and so was lifted above his anxiety and pain and enabled us to see him prepare to leave us in comfort and peace and that was a great source of comfort for us too. As importantly to all of us was that the afternoon before he died we had all been there together; his priest had been to anoint and offers prayers and we all laid on hands of healing;during a small songs of praise (held each Sunday in the hospital) we had sat and sung the hymns and said the prayers around him and then there was Songs of Praise on the television that we all joined in. Mum wanted to be there at his end to hold his hand as he passed from life to death - but she missed it by 10 minutes; she wanted him there for their 60th wedding anniversary, as he did, but he went just 3 days too soon. My sister and I have been there supporting her this week, to comfort her in her pain of grief and to help make those painful decisions and to try to be strong for her. I am sure the reality will now set in as we are now in a period of no decisions or mad rushing round making arrangements until Sunday 16th when his body will be taken to Church for vespers and then on the 17th there will be a Requiem Mass followed by private cremation. It may just be another date in our genealogy for future generations but for now his memories will be very much alive for us. His faith and his family were his life and I was blest to have him as a father. Liz

    2. Geo.
    3. The following is a message on the Genealogy-Cumberland list in response to the Pedlar's Story. I don't think this person is the 'Pedlar' though Geo. This rings a sad bell. Some of you may remember the Quaker Oats factory at Whitehaven. When it was sold one of the beneficiaries Was Thompson HOLIDAY-STRONG. Although Thompson was Public School educated he was not "worldly wise" and within a comparatively short time he found he was without means. He ended up living on the streets in Workington and more often than not spent his nights in the ruin of Curwen Hall. He never lost his public school accent and it was sad to hear him beg for money to buy "Drink". He was seldom "arrested" by the Police for being Drunk and Disorderly although he was frequently "thrown" in to the back of the police Van and dropped off at his stately home. Roland The Whitehaven News, August 7, 1913 THE PEDLAR'S STORY. _____ (FOUNDED ON FACT.) ______ How did I come to this boys? I'll tell you the story now; I've seen better days as you guess - and a chap's got to live somehow.

    3. Posted with permission of the transcriber, 'Ann'. Geo. The Whitehaven News, August 7, 1913 THE PEDLAR'S STORY. _____ (FOUNDED ON FACT.) ______ How did I come to this boys? I'll tell you the story now; I've seen better days as you guess - and a chap's got to live somehow. In time my pomp and glory earned four thon' a year. And should have had double by this if it hadn't been for the beer! I was awfully fond of the barley, so I bought some brewery shares. They brought me twenty per cent. But were smashed by the Lloyd George scares. But that didn't take from my bosom the love of the earth and the sea. And your Lakeland valleys and mountains are better than wealth to me! Soon with racing and gambling and women, I was landed at beggary's door; Now I haven't a friend in the world where I used to have many a score. I managed to get a clerkship at eighteen shillings a week. I was only there for a fortnight - I couldn't put up with their cheek! For I once kept my motor and servants and lived in a splendid house, And invited the pick of the county to pot of my pheasants and grouse, And instead of peddling in tap-rooms I swigged my 'cham' with the best; Had dollar cigars and diamonds an opera box and the rest! Went to luncheons and dinners and banquets at a couple of guineas a try, Now I'm glad of a bread and cheese sandwick or a two penny plate of pie. Tripe, black-pudding, and trotters, a penn'orth of fish and chips - O choicest of dainty dishes, the thought; makes me lick my lips! I was always a welcome figure at ball, reception or hop; Now the 'balls' to me most familiar are those o'er my uncle's shop. I had wealth and honors, and jewels and public gifts galore, And now it gives me a shudder to pass the workhouse door! Addresses emblazoned in colour, a silver casket or two, With my portrait in oils by a master, to life both faithful and true; Dressed in my civic garb, boys, with ermine and gold lace - And then came the evil days - disaster, dishonour, disgrace! So I've left off touching the drink, lads - apart from a gallon or two. Which I drink twice or thrice on a night, till everything turns blue! And I smoke no more dollar cigars, lads with the Duke or the Prince of Wales - You may stare as hard as you like, but I'm telling no fairy tales. My clothes aren't just what they used to be, like me their worse for wear! And the thatch on my head's getting thin, I'm bald just here and there. And my eyesight is weakening strangely, and I'm losing my sense of smell. That's the fault of the snuff boys, as any snuffer can tell; And my heart and my knees - they are shaky, I've had 'em for fifty years! And some of my tusks have vanished, and oh, my poor old ears! In fact I'm a wreck and a ruin and my time must be getting short, But whilst I've got a shot in the locker I mean to get hold of a quart! Will you stand a poor devil a drink, boys, I've only had ten to-day. And accept my advice in exchange, and that is to watch and to pray; Pray that you don't get nabbed boys, there ain't any ale in quod, And watch that the Peeler don't spot you when playing the game of Cod! For the world takes a lot of watching if you're dry when you're out on the spree. And if you won't stand me a drink, boys, you'll have to leave one with me. My license is all in order and any man here may look, And devil a one conviction is down in the charges book! CHAS. F. FORSHAW, L. L. D. Bradford. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

And yet there's the madness of wine, In the glance of your dear eyes of blue; For yours is the rapture of the morning, But mine is the laughter of noon; If I sued I should meet but with scorning, As the glow-worm who sighed for the moon. Years ago a thorn pierced your white hand, - You remember - the rose was in flower; I, a slave to your every command, Was assisting to deck your fair bower. The touch of your delicate fingers, As I drew out the envious dart, Even yet in my memory lingers - For the thorn entered deep in my heart. F.G.G. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
