    3. Now you know why I hate summer! I have a feeling it`s going to be a long, hot one, but then it usually is!! Sorry Marlene about the mossies, they love me too! Val xx I can cope with most insects, it's the ones that you can't see like the sneaky mosquitoes, doing a good deed the other day I let my guard down and got bitten, since the West Nile virus started have managed not to escape that fate, they used to love feasting on me, that's a risk you try to avoid now. Horse flies have never bothered me Now ...Has Everyone Melted .......look out Jean in MA it's your turn .... The list is so quiet I am wondering if everyone has survived the heatwaves, I think Mary and I have just about melted away, well I have anyway, my apartment was Over 100f yesterday, and overnight was still over 94f it's been hot for what seems forever, all week getting hotter each day, later today we are in for severe Stormy weather, and hopefully the humidity will go, lots of our places recorded the humidity between 106f to 114f /45c ... I remember that temperature from David jnr's wedding in Cyprus .. standing out in the noontime sun, that we couldn't escape Now I need to go out and shop, have run out of the basics, waiting for the community bus though, that's the least amount of walking ``````````````````````````````````````````````````` ==== GEN-TRIVIA-ENG Mailing List ==== RANDOM TAGLINE - GEN-TRIVIA-ENG - MAILING LIST Keep up to date with the current Rules for this List at - www.trivvies.com -- No virus found in this incoming message. 3. It's hot here too,Marlene. It hit 100f today. The heat index said about 110f. I spent most of the day inside--not much better--but I was able to do busy work which didn't take too much energy. There was a nice breeze so once in awhile I'd sit on my patio and read. I think my dog has dug a hole to China. I haven't spanked her for that--that is natural to them. I'll just fill it in when the heat wave is over. 3. sent to me by 'evva in the E. TTFN Marlene Dear Diary: Last year I replaced all the windows in my house with those expensive double pane energy-efficient kind, but this week I got a call from the contractor who installed them. He was complaining that the work had been completed a whole year ago and I hadn't paid for them. Now just because I'm blonde doesn't mean that I am automatically stupid. So, I told him just what his fast talking sales guy had told ME last year.... Namely, that in ONE YEAR these windows would pay for themselves! Helllooooo? It's been a year! (I told him.) There was only silence at the other end of the line, so I finally just hung up.... He didn't call back. Guess I won that stupid argument.

    3. Assuming you had a manual with your laptop, or at least a manual pre-installed on your laptop I would suggest that you look through that to see what the "FN" key does with your laptop. This varies from laptop to laptop I think, so not sure that what it does to mine will do it for yours. This is clutching at straws though. 1. Fw: The Times, 26 Dec 1822 - Poisoning at Castlesowerby
    2. Geo.
    3. Posted with permission of the transcriber, Petra Michinson. Geo. Part of a family at Castlesowerby lately very narrowly escaped destruction by poison. The master of the house, an old widower, exhibited signs of attachment to a servant girl; but she, conceiving that the old man's son and daughter were inimical to her happiness, purchased some arsenic at Penrith, and put it into the tea-kettle. The destined victims, on pouring out their tea, thought it a strange colour, and refrained from drinking it. Foiled in this attempt, she next put arsenic into the broth, of which the obnoxious individuals both partook, and soon afterwards found themselves very ill. Mr. IRVING, of Hesket New Market, surgeon, was sent for; he detected the poison, and administered antidotes. The offender has not yet been apprehended. - Carlisle Patriot. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Petra

    2. Geo.
    3. Posted with permission of the transcriber, Petra Michinson. Geo. NORTHERN CIRCUIT, CARLISLE, MARCH 14. MURDER. Mary BALNER was charged with the wilful murder of John HILL, her natural son. The Jury returned a verdict of Guilty of Manslaughter. As soon as the Jury re-entered the Court, the prisoner (who had previously conducted herself respectfully, but with much firmness and judgment, swooned away and remained insensible for some minutes. On recovering, she appeared agitated by powerful mental sufferings, and remained racking in agony, till relieved by tears and attentions of those persons about her. On her being called up for judgment, Mr. Justice HOLROYD, addressing himself to the prisoner, said, "The grand jury, upon the evidence before them, returned a bill against you for the wilful murder of your son. The jury who have patiently heard your case have acquitted you of the murder, and found you guilty of manslaughter. It is necessary, for the protection of young infants, that the crime of which you have been found guilty, should be visited with such severe punishment as to prevent those persons who are withheld by the feelings of humanity to their offspring from treating their children with cruelty and barbarity. The jury have declared that the unfortunate child's death was not occasioned by the blows which you gave him with the broomstick; if it had been so, I should have felt it necessary to pass a heavy sentence indeed upon you; as it is, the sentence of the Court is, that you be imprisoned for the space of twelve calendar months in the county gaol. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Petra

    1. From The Times, 21 Oct 1823 - William Pit Explosion
    2. Geo.
    3. Posted with permission of the transcriber, Petra Michinson. Geo. DREADFUL OCCURRENCE. - (Further particulars - from the Carlisle Journal.) - On Monday last, the town of Whitehaven was thrown into the utmost agitation, by an awful explosion of fire-damp from the William Pit (a name of disastrous import), a coal-mine belonging to the Earl of LONSDALE, when it was known that a considerable number of colliers were at the moment employed in the workings. It was impossible to ascertain the extent of the calamity immediately, but the fatal certainty soon became apparent. No less than fourteen men, sixteen boys, and two girls, have come to a premature death by this catastrophe. That the pit was over-charged with fire-damp in some part of the workings, is now too evident; but it is doing no more than justice to those who have the more immediate superintendence of these very extensive concerns to say, that no precaution was omitted by them to guard the colliers against any sudden accident. The workmen, it appears, were employed in removing some pillars, in a part of the pit where the ventilation was extremely good, and where there was not, consequently, any reason to apprehend danger from the existence of fire damp; and indeed the air was in general supposed to be good, except in some recesses into which the colliers had no occasion to enter. They were, besides, every one furnished with a safety lamp, and were under strict orders from the superintendents to keep their lamps properly secured. When the misfortune happened, they had all nearly finished their work for the day, and by what or whose neglect or mismanagement it was occasioned scarcely a conjecture can now be formed. It is generally supposed that one of the workmen had been using some improper liberties with his lamp, and had removed the cylinder when in a place where the fire-damp was present. There were also 17 horses killed, but some of their drivers escaped. In recording the above melancholy event, it may not be irrelative to mention a remarkable coincidence of names and circumstances which occurred some years since in the county of Durham. On the 25th of May, 1812, a tremendous explosion took place in the William Pit, a coalmine at Felling Colliery, by which 92 out of 124 lost their lives, and 32 were saved; being the exact number of those who have perished in the William Pit at Whitehaven. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I am sorry, but I must have missed the main article on this explosion.
