Posted with permission of the transcriber, Barb. Baker. Geo. THE TIMES, Wednesday, May 22, 1844. - The Destruction of Naworth Castle. MONDAY, MAY 20 The facts mentioned in my communication of Saturday are all confirmed. The beautiful Castle is a ruin, and all its relics of antiquity are destroyed. By the untiring exertions of MR. RAMSHAY, the EARL OF CARLISLE's steward, and some of the principal tenantry in the vicinity, the family papers and muniments were rescued, and some unimportant parts of the furniture are preserved, but from its extreme antiquity, the greater part of it could not bear removal, and what the fire spared has been hopelessly damaged. The books, furniture, &c., in LORD WILLIAM HOWARD's apartments were thrown from the window, and of course destroyed; but the apartments themselves have escaped, although the lower part of the tower is much burnt. The fire, it appears, was first discovered about half-past 3 o'clock, and not at noon, as before stated, by a son of MR. ORRIDGE, the governor of Carlisle gaol, who happened accidently to be present, and it was owing to his presence of mind that assistance was procured in time to save any of the property. There were none but women in the Castle when the fire was discovered, and the young gentleman ran not less than two miles to Kirkhaus, where there are some collieries belonging to the EARL OF CARLISLE, to procure assistance, and also despatched messages to Carlisle and Brampton. The fire is supposed to have originated in the Porter's-lodge, in consequence of the flues being out of order or too much intersected with wood; and although there was an impression at first that it was the act of an incendiary, this is certainly not the impression now. The Castle is said to have been insured to the amount of 10,000l., and it is gratifying to be able to add that there was neither life nor limb endangered by the fire, although there were thousands present. =====================================================
Posted with permission of the transcriber, Barb. Baker. Geo. THE TIMES, Tuesday, Oct. 21, 1834 / DEATH / REYNOLDS On Saturday an inquest was held at the White Horse, Market-place, Old Brentford, on the body of MISS ELIZABETH REYNOLDS, a young lady of high respectability. The deceased resided with her mother, a widow lady, and two sisters. On Friday last she was in good health and spirits; she retired to bed about 9 o'clock at night, previous to which she had complained of a tooth ache, and expressed her intention of having it extracted on the following day. One of the sisters slept with the deceased, and on awaking in the morning, turning towards the deceased, called "Lizzy", at the same time kissing her cheek, which she (the sister) had no sooner done than she gave a scream, and sprang from the bed, discovering that her much attached sister was a corpse. MR. HALL, a surgeon, gave his opinion that the rupture of a blood-vessel in the heart was the cause of death, and that the young lady had passed from sleep to eternity. Verdict..........."Died by the visitation of God." ____________________________________________________________
Posted with permission of the transcriber, Barb. Baker. Geo. THE TIMES, Tuesday, Oct. 21, 1834 MURDER OF A WOMAN BY HER HUSBAND. - A person named PEARSON, labouring man, at Randyland, near Brampton has been committed to Carlisle gaol, charged with the murder of his wife. It appears that PEARSON, in company with his wife, reached home on Monday night, the former being intoxicated. Some time after they entered into the house, the neighbours heard a great noise proceeding from the room they occupied. PEARSON was using very violent language, and in a short time after, blows were struck by the prisoner and cries of "Murder" heard. The neighbours interfered, but their attempts were frustrated by PEARSON declaring he would serve them in the same way if they offered to speak to him. Comparative quietness appeared to have followed this, and it seems that the deceased had been preparing to go to bed, when PEARSON again attacked her with a stick. The neighbours were again aroused, and on getting to the door found the deceased outside of the house, quite naked, and in a pitiable state from the bruises she had received. She was then invited into the house of one of the neighbours, to keep her out of PEARSON's way. She, however, declined doing so, and again went into her own room. There she had not remained long, as she was seen early in the morning, still quite naked, in a field about 20 yards from the house, by an individual from Brampton who had occasion to pass along the road, and who heard PEARSON telling her, in an angry manner, to get up and go into the house. It appears she obeyed him, and with difficulty reached the bed, and in a short time she was found lying there dead, her body presenting a shocking spectacle, from the brutal treatment she had received. The principal wounds were on the head and neck, and from these the blood was flowing copiously, and had stained nearly every article in the room. PEARSON, on the result of his conduct being communicated to him, betrayed the most hardened indifference; and while the corpse was being laid out, was engaged in drinking from a bottle of spirits he held in his hand. An inquest was held on Thursday, and a verdict of "Wilful murder" brought in. ____________________________________________________________
